I don’t understand why the PT-109 crewman said he thought that JFK’s rank at the time was Ensign. Kennedy was a Lieutenant on the boat. I know it was 20 years after, but it seems like that wouldn’t be something you’d forget.

I got the PT boat member right. #3 had too few men on the boat and #1 thought JFK was only an Ensign. #2 also knew McMahon's name.

Not that hard to believe. JFK wasn't a Lieutenant at the time, but a Lieutenant (junior grade) - one grade lower, the rank indicated by a silver bar, looking closer to an Ensign bar than a full Lt. Plus, junior officers were almost always addressed as "Mister" instead of by their rank, so it's something one could easily forget over a 20 year period. As for the number of crew, several companies manufactured PT boats to different specifications - that and differences in configurations for different roles meant different numbers in the crews. Plus, on PT-109 at the time of her sinking, there was at least one extra person on board over and above the usual complement.

I kind of agree with the OP on this one. I was U.S. military over 50 years ago, and the one thing I remember best about most of my mates was their rank at the time.
