I don't know a Minneapolis accent but eliminated one pair on the basis of obvious NYC accent. Picked the Kenny twins because they looked like they should be ball players. I can't help but wonder which of these seventy year olds is still around and what kind of lives did they have.

A doll-like looking, feisty and flamboyant Joyce Davidson- now 87, Betty White- aged 97 (same age as Doris Day) are both with us. 6 years younger than as fit as a fiddle Olivia de Havilland and Kirk Douglas, this year 103. Very Long Live guys !!!!

If I didn't read the description I wouldn't have realized it myself. At the time he was only involved in the first game show of his career, "Play Your Hunch", which he hosted for Goodson and Todman for four years. The first show he produced on his own was "Word for Word" in 1963, which he also hosted. In 1964, he started producing a little quiz game, which would become known as "Jeopardy!" by the time it made it to air. I wonder what became of that show? ;)

@@Lisa-di1wi It was Merv's wife Julann who gave him the basic idea for "Jeopardy!". He'd been lamenting the lack of any quiz shows since the scandals, so she suggested a game where the contestants were given the answers. "Sure, and I'll end up in the slammer," he replied. Then she said, "5280," and Merv caught on: "How many feet are in a mile?" Correct. Julann: "79 Wistful Vista." Merv: "What was Fibber McGee and Molly's address?" Correct again. Merv knew now that she had something. The rest, as they say, is history.

The "obscure" questions aren't "obscure" to him. And they help HIM exclude people, and zone in on the one or two. Most of the panelists have their areas of expertise. As a pilot, Tom would have known about radio communications. On that basis, #2 didn't know diddly, but 1 and 3 did. You'll notice after that Tom wasn't interested on wasting time by grilling 2 any further.

@gemoftheocean I totally agree with you there. As has been pointed out, I should have made that comment on a show where he asked what I would consider an obscure question. I do like him as a panelist for the most part. What I considered obscure was when he would ask for the origin of the contestant's last name when there was no connection to the reason for them being there.
