I think what I like best about old time music is it don't matter if it's most popular rendition was a modal, "In the pine" as much as how the person playing the tune makes it their own. Ain't nobody going to correct you on that ground because you made it yours. I do think if you strung up some nylguts it'd mellow the harshness of the sound and help this tune out, but I don't know what you play otherwise so that might be the sound you're going for.
