Toaks Titanium SIPHON Alcohol Burner - Is It Worth the MONEY and the HYPE?!

There are not a lot of alcohol burners I haven't tried, but this is one that took me a while to come around and purchase. Not sure why, but it did! I think you will like it :)

For those of you who use 95% ethanol rather than HEET, you need to mix down your ethanol to 80% when using this burner. This burner will burn 95% ethanol too hot and you'll get a yellow fireball that soots up your pot. In order to mix down 95% ethanol to 80%, add 1 part water to every 5 parts of 95% ethanol. I tested 95%, 90%, 80%, 75%, and 70% and found 80% (1:5) ethanol was the sweet spot.

One tip for this stove: the Vargo Fuel bottle just fits into this stove- no more crushing risk. It is tight, but it definitly fits. Might scratch the outsode of the bottle, but very slightly

I have owned this burner for about 3 years now. I have found the easiest way to snuff it is a cutoff small diameter Red Bull can the same height as the burner. I snuff the burner. let it cool as I prepare my meal with the boiling water. Then pour back any unused fuel into the fuel bottle. Light the burner once more to burn off the residue. This burner works like a champ with multiple different pot stands. Keep in mind the 1" to 1 1/4" sweet spot distance from burner to pot. Whatever cons this burner has are easily outweighed by the pros. Thanks for sharing.

I use my Toaks siphon with the Toaks alcohol pot stand it's a little smaller than yours and you can use 3 sides instead of 4 to make an even smaller lighter pot stand, it's my new ultralight kit aswell!!(=✌💚

Finally got one! Use a titanium Bushcooker as a pot stand and can also flip the siphon burner upside down and use Esbit tabs. Bushcooker also burns wood and wood pellets so the kit is very versatile. I find the Toaks Siphon Alcohol Burner to be very efficient and easy to reclaim unused alcohol from once snuffed out. Great video as always.

I got a Toaks siphon a couple months ago with a Toaks stainless steel mesh pot stand. The burner and pot stand easily fit in my Toaks 550 pot/mug. I am happy with the kit. The pot stand you have in the video would be more stable but fails my low fiddle factor preference. Happy stoving.

I love my Toaks Siphon, I use mine with the Vargo Hexagon wood stove as my pot stand/wind screen...give it a try, works well for me in Colorado at 9000 ft. in most conditions. Keep up the good work Ernie, I enjoy your channel 👍👍

Do you rest the Toaks burner on the inside bottom of that Vargo Hex wood stove? Wouldn’t that create a significant distance between the flame and underside of the cook pot/cup? Or, do you elevate the Siphon?

Its always a good idea to have a windshield. The Toaks Syphon burner with the Toaks windshield (+4 holes +2 tent stakes) becomes a windshield/potstand. And when using the pots of smaller than its internal diameter it gives wind protection where the flame can be most affected... The gap from burner top to pot underside. So its ideal. Can't snuff out the flame on the Syphon stove. Lift off pot, remove the stakes, lower thepot onto the burned... SNUFFED. Thanks again for sharing. Take care

I use the Evernew Cross Stand with mine and it works great. You still need a windscreen so I use the Vargo short windscreen. It makes a perfect ultralight brew kit.

Another like about the Toaks Siphon, is that when on an over night saunter, primarily relying on one of my wood stoves, I always pack an alcohol stove and 4 0z of alcohol for the unexpected conditions that make a wood burner impractical or impossible. The Toaks seems to fit easiest and best in my wood stoves for a sure, clean boil under those conditions.

This is my new favorite alcohol stove! I use it with a rabbit cage wire mesh stand from Garage Grown Gear. It works great! I use it in the vestibule of my tent where it’s out of the wind, otherwise you’d need a wind screen.

I have this burner. Even after you snuff out it is so hot the alcohol keeps evaporating so if you try to over-provision there is wastage. If you try to measure out just-enough then in windier conditions the fuel exhausted before a boil. Either way there's some issue. 1-2 days: great. > 2 days go with gas.

I cut out a disc from aluminum flashing slightly larger than the stovetop including a cutout of a short handle. With this cutout disc and handle, I can snuff the flame or reduce it to a simmer by leaving it cracked open just a little.

I have the Toaks siphon stove and laxada and they both work great. The siphon fits inside of the laxada. The price is better for the later. Stove I uses other nano of the floor of the stove. Only negative is closing off the flame for either one in inside the nano. I just purchased a trangia spirit burner that can be controlled. I, too, have Toaks stand as soon in video but I prefer the nano!

I like this stove so much that I have three of them. I usually use it with its own pot stand, and when not, I use it with the BCB Crusader MK II pot stand, which is part of the British Army Crusader Mark II Cook Set. What I like most on it is that it pretty much resembles a small gas stove.

My adventure into alcohol stoves begun this week, and I opted to grab the toaks syphon, as I saw (correct me if I'm wrong) it's basically a titanium version of the tetkoba's CHS pop can burner. Wanted a commercial one to try before going into DIY, might as well be this one.

I just recently got the Toaks TiStand and the 650 ml light pot. I use my homemade CHS Universal stove that happens to be the same size (53 mm by 40 mm) of the Toaks siphon and boots twice as fast with a more even tornado flame pattern. My stove weighs in at 7 grams. Inside without any wind, I get 500 ml of 60 F water to a boil in about 5:45-6 min. The only thing I don't like about the TiStand is the use of tent stakes which do not pack into my 650 ml pot.

I have this same stove. What I have done is cut out the top of the pot stand for the pathfinder bottle/cup. It blocks the wind really well and places the cup at the right level to boil the water. I use the Siphon with a Sterno Inferno pot (batchstovez lid) and base. Half ounce of alcohol boils 2 cups in little more than 4:30.

I use my Siphon in combination with the "Bushbox Ultralight" for two reasons ... 1. You have the perfect distance between the burner and the bottom of the pot and 2. I have a well working multifuelstove if I run short on alcohol. I you use the Titanium Cross Potstand you have to turn it upside down because you need a distance of 1" between burner and pot, with only 0.5" the boiltime will be much longer.

Hiram Cook performed some very thorough test on this burner 5 yrs ago. He discovered that lowering the stove by half an inch almost doubles the burn time. Pretty simple way of lowering the temp. Some people flip some cross type pot stands to change from 1" to ½".

I’ve found a 2- 2 &1/2in distance stove top to pot bottom is fastest boil time . And 1/2 ounce alcohol boils two cups water. Larger diameter pots (5 & 3\4 in) are more efficient use of alcohol.

I use the Toaks Stove Frame (basically a bit of wire frame) with my Siphon stove. Works great - But! - I recommend snipping the top layer of squares off the stand. Doing that puts the stand at the ideal height for fast boil times.

I use the same stand with my Toaks stove. I line the inside of the wire mesh stand with some sheet aluminium from a drink can to function as a wind shield. The stand, stove, small ferro rod and wash up rag fits inside my 400ml Ti mug which sits inside my Toaks 750ml pot. Awesome compact lightweight cook kit.

Considering how little difference there is between the siphon and a good CHS pop can burner, i can't justify paying for it. Also, titanium grades: Grade 1 is commercially pure titanium, Softest and easiest to work as a sheet metal in dies, most corrosion resistant Grade 2 is like grade 1 only harder and stiffer. Medium oxygen level in production process. Grade 3 and 4 are like above, just progressing to more stiffness and durability. Harder to work as sheet metal. Grade 5 and above are different alloys of titanium. That's where you see all the 5Al4V and whatnot super alloys that make titanium into something really special. We could get into alpha and beta alloys and whatnot but thats well beyond stoves..

Interesting .. looks like a Super Stove. All good going forward to anyone buying one. Would I buy one? Naah .. I'm more than happy with my Whitebox, Trangia, Fancy Feasts and a heap of other Alcohol Burners in all shapes and sizes. "But some of those don't prime as quickly, burn as hot or as long and are not as quick in boiling X amount of water as this one." Yes .. but mine are all paid for, they perform as I expect them to .. and .. after 71 Summers, I'm in no rush 😊.

When they say grade 1 or grade two that means grade two LOL true story. Grade two I'm not sure what that means either and I do that crap for a living basically just anything out of China, there were some Chinese that wanted me to help them set up a steel mill over there, tall order for me but I have no natural resources to speak of and they needed ark melters to generate the heat for the smelting process for titanium inconel or any exotic they're not going to catch up for a while doesn't matter how much money they blow on it well I'm off subject here I like this little stove for an aggressive ultralight this might be the only thing I beat you too LOL but still like your info. It's always been helpful and on this one single rare occasion where I've actually had it for a while the information was still pretty nice I didn't do the test on it like you did. thanks again for your great videos

I’ve had my Toaks siphon for about a year & I have one question about it. I like to start most of my stoves with a Ferro rod & always wondered if that’s going to be a problem with this style of stove, as in the small debris that comes off a Ferro rod plugging the jets. I haven’t had an issue yet.

I guess that little burner is called Siphon because it siphons quite a load of money out of your wallet ... but the stand is very fine and the price for it is justified. It can be also used with three plates only, and one can use it with many different alcohol stoves, esbit/hexamine or even organic matter such as wood.

Ok Ernie..here’s a concern with most alcohol stoves that I NEVER see addressed in these tests (yours or anyone else’s). What do you do with the left over fuel when you’re done? Dump it on the ground and waste it? Burn the stove out and waste it? Carry a big funnel so you can try to get it back in your fuel bottle? And then of course you still can’t really get ALL of the fuel completely out of the stove. How do you put it back in your pack without spreading the dribble around? This is why I’ll probably never use anything other than a Trangia!

The Toaks siphon easily returns every drop of fuel directly to even a small-mouth Vargo alcohol container without spilling a drop. One of the main reasons I don’t ever carry anything else.

I've been carrying that stove in summer for coffee making since 3years. It came with a wire mesh stand works well, but requires a wind screen, so I switched to the same titanium pot stand/windscreen you showed. I also own a trangia clone👍, the pathfinder alcohol stove👎 and the evernew titanium Dx stove set (🤢), but I keep reaching for the toaks.

It will bloom quickly on half an ounce...whether you get a boil of coarse depends on conditions. But I have a Vargo Decagon...and this sir, is no vargo decagon LOL (I can't stand the Decagon...)

Ernie. What I do is I nest my toaks 750 in a pathfinder bottle stove so I can use esbit cubes if I run out of fuel. But I invert the pathfinder stove then put the toaks siphon with cross stand then 750 on top. The pathfinder stove acts as a wind screen and also a quasi caldera cone. It also holds a trangia stove. I like the pathfinder stove because it protects my cookpot from being crushed in my pack

Your article had me thinking .. What if ? So I ordered the Toaks titanium alcohol stove along with the Toaks titanium alcohol stove stand. 1....I found that the Toaks titanium siphon stove works really well as a 2nd heat source in a Vargo Hexagon wood burning stove. I modified mine ( Vargo Hexagon ), to help the air flow when burning wood. I drilled 3 , 3/8 inch holes in a triangle pattern in the lower part of every other section. 2....If you use a Vargo Titanium 700 Bot with the Toak's titanium alcohol stove stand ( all 4 sections ) will fit inside it while assembled. The wind screen , the Toaks titanium siphon burner (in the stuff sack for it ) and the Vargo bot weight 6.9 ounces as a nice compact , complete , unit.

Spoiler alert: the lixada is slightly faster than the toaks (under half a minute ) but burns through alcohol over a minute faster. This is in my testing using the same toaks pot stand for both which I like.

Walmart also has denatured alcohol which burns clean & leaves no soot. They hide it in the arts and crafts area, not in camping or auto sections. It's called Kleen Strip Fuel Denatured Alcohol, comes in a 1 quart blue & red container, and runs around 6 bucks.

I've never understood why boil speed is the go too stove test. I'm walking. If I was in a hurry I'd take a plane. If I want a superfast boil time I'd us a small thermonuclear device. That will boil two cups of water in less than a picosecond. Kind heavy and loud, though. The only test that matters, within reason, is how many ounces of the fuel I have to carry on my back does it take to heat up water hot enough to make a meal. Not sterilize the meal, just get it hot enough to reconstitute and still be warm enough to eat. Spending 4 to 5 minutes to boil the water for the meal then 4 to 5 minutes for it to cool down enough to eat just doesn't make since to men.

Boil time is the only parameter that can be easily measured to compare different stove types and fuel types. It's not saying that boiling water is the main use of a stove (though for many people it is), but it's the best way to make comparisons. And there are plenty of fuel use comparison videos on this and other channels.

No wick. That's why it's called a siphon. The walls are so close together that capillary action takes the place of the wick.

I use the Toaks with a Trail Designs Ti Tri. From testing I found that it used the least fuel (from stoves compared) and was less affected by wind in that combo (with only a gradual increase in fuel consumption). See... kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6mxmIywdsx-nLc

The Toaks alcohol burner looks like a damn' valve lifter! That's what I thought when I first watched this video. So still wiping the sleep out of my eyes I went out to the garage to collect a lifter, a remnant of a disaster from when I used the wrong timing pin and had to rebulid my Ford 2.5 engine. The lifter is a steel cup that looks like a tiny 1 oz Toak. I filled it with alcohol and lit it and it started a steady flame, so I looked about for a pot stand. Thinking to try for a boil, I found three Berringer wine corks and looked for a small pot which led me to find the bottom of my 1 cup expresso maker in the drain board. I filled it with water and decided that I didn't have time for a grind so I hastily assembled the moka pot and balanced it on the corks over the flame. In about 4 minutes I had water coming out of the spout. So while I was waiting for it to finish I put 10 ounces of water in the metal pitcher that I use for steaming milk and put it on the now blackend corks and heated it to 130 degrees by my chef's thermometer before the flame when out. I think I could have made a 12 ounce latte .... Thanks for the inspiration!

Save 15 bucks and Buy a RUCAS alcohol stove. Ne need for a pot stand either.
