Thank you. I live in a location in PDX which will, literally, be cut off from everything after the quake because it's a peninsula - three sides will liquify and the other side has routes in/out with railroad bridges that will collapse. The community is organizing to get help from city, state and federal gov but it's hard. If we don't get this fixed, we'll become a much larger outdoor Superdome disaster, like with Katrina. Or worse, we are across from the main fuel storage hub for the state. If toxic smoke comes toward us we will be trapped - and die.

Also, if you arent real close to the epicenter, its not quite as bad. It wont be a walk in the park by any means, but keep your cool and things should be ok. The city of Hilo, Hawaii was devastated by two tsunamis, in 1946 and 1960. Hundreds of people were killed. After the second one, a portion of the ruined urban area was raised by landfill and then built upon, but the bulk of what had been downtown Hilo was permanently turned into parks. More than 50 years have subsequently passed without another major disaster, but it will happen again, and when it does, fortunately a lot of people simply will no longer be in the way in this one location.

The problem is that we love stories and warnings about events like this but we never do anything about it, we may even exacerbate it. Then when the event does happen and kills a bunch of people we pick up the pitchforks and demand answers as to why nothing was done to prevent all the destruction in the first place and the people in charge will just offer up the same old cookie cutter response, something along the lines of "We offer our deepest condolences and offer thoughts and prayers to all those affected, we have simply failed you and will learn from our mistakes and will do better next time". Then we'll all forget about it in a few weeks and nothing will be done because who cares? The next big one will be hundreds of years away, it's their problem now.

It's ironic that having grown into adulthood in SoCal, which is renowned for its earthquakes and fires, that I would dream of and ultimately move to the PNW -- an area now renowned for its earthquakes and fires. Now that I'm here I feel no pressure to move, but there definitely needs to be more urgency in retrofitting the entire area for an earthquake and tsunami that could cost the nation hundreds of $billions to recover from. Given the cost, there just isn't the public support required for such a monumental investment; so it remains a gamble with the time we have left before the next Cascadia megathrust earthquake strikes this area.

@briane1735 жыл бұрын
I'm sure I'd be considered a heretic for suggesting this, but while climate change deserves thoughtful ideas and solutions, Cascadia's impending disaster I believe is far and away more urgent. The economic damage, the loss of life, and the devastation to PNW civilization and infrastructure will be immense -- almost incalculable -- and the process for retrofitting and preparing for this impending disaster moves more slowly than these tectonic plates. And the solutions MUST be local and supported by the residents living up here, not coming from the Federal Govt establishment. While the Federal establishment is fighting over immigration, socialism vs. capitalism, foreign policy, and deficit spending, absolutely ZERO funding is finding its way to the PNW; it's not even on their radar, despite the press the Cascadia Subduction Zone has received over the past four years. The three states involved, and the coastal communities and large metropolitan areas directly in its path, are going to bear the brunt of not only the effects of the coming megathrust earthquake but also the tremendous cost of retrofitting, disaster preparedness, emergency management, and recovery. But it's like most other things -- a stitch in time saves nine. Pay now or pay infinitely more later, passing the cost to our posterity and an entire nation after we've succumbed to the catastrophe.

So what good is building everything on top of artificial mounds, unless you take it to extremes? Places in Japan got 20+ meters inundation and 40+ meters run-up. One city in Japan declined to build 15+ meter walls: concrete is only good for ~50 years, then it's only half as strong. Many places had modest 5 or 6 meter walls, and they found that with adequate warning, that short height gave several more minutes for people to get away and to high ground.

Jhere, the geologists will all die too. They're not going to survive. I was in California six years - doing research, then British Columbia two years, doing research, then I lived on the islands of Washington - doing research. Altogether I was there over 20 years - doing research - then I read the captain's logs going back hundreds of years, then I studied hundreds of independent historic documents going back over 600 years - written in Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian, Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Arabic, Dutch, etc. Geologists are so attached to their idiotic unsubstantiated theories, they don't even bother to look at the thousands of independent sources from all across the world. The Cascadia fault slip did not cause the January 1700 quake and tsunami - it was instead one of the many results of that cataclysm. January 26, 1700 was when the tectonic plates became subducted. Another cataclysm will soon decimate North America. The chances of surviving there are next to zero. If you want to survive, pack up and leave - like I did. I heard when "The Big One" aka the Cascadia Subduction Zone gets hit, that the tsunami will not only wipe out Seattle, but also Portland. Chris made one very brief comment that we don't have to worry about Portland. I live in a suburb of Portland, and I'm actually in one of the last towns you come across when leaving Portland, and going up HWY 26 to cross the mountain range to get to the coast (usually Seaside or Cannon Beach). I'm wondering if this tsunami will reach high enough levels to cross the mountain range, and flood Portland. I mean according to a news broadcast I watched, they claimed that's what would happen, and everything west of I-5 would be wiped out. I've been really scared about that. I think I could handle the earthquake, but not a tsunami coming to drown us all. I'm deathly afraid of water, and I honestly don't want to die from a wave of the ocean carrying my house away, and wiping out all life in its path. However, I think it'd be impossible for a tsunami to reach over 3,000 feet in elevation, to cross over the coastal range. So, I don't know why the news broadcast made it seem like a tsunami will wipe out Portland, Seattle, and everything west of I-5. I used to live in Seattle, so I understand it's a real threat for them, because they are along the puget sound, which is a bay off the ocean, but Portland is protected by 3,500 foot coastal range mountains. I'd like a clear answer as to whether I have anything to worry about, so if anyone has some insight, I'd be so appreciative. Thanks!

I used to live in North plains, but moved to Sandy. I would be more worried about structural damage for sure. It would have to climb the coastal range to get to you. If a dam fails, then it may be a different story for everyone.

Having said that, I've always wondered, all things considered, (Newport sits on a cliff 30-40 feet above sea level on cliff side, wide open, no cliff, south of Newport) if somehow these factors would possibly be the towns saving grace, but now, I think I have pretty much lost all that confidence considering that the ground is expected to drop some 30-50 FEET 😮😲😨😬😩🤞 I can't tell you how appreciative I am to know this knowledge, thanks again to All involved with this research... 🙇♂️🤝🤜
