I think you would get a much better understanding of how good she is by hearing complete songs. She isn't just about high notes. But welcome to So Hyang's world. :) Try listening to 'Bridge Over Troubled Water from Immortal Songs 2 to start with, that or 'Arirang Alone' or Lean on Me' All from immortal songs are the best versions. I love 'You raise me Up' from the same show but that one seems to get blocked more than the others.

Rahul Dhere they both are world class, but I personally feel like Dimash is a more stable singer when it comes to high notes(for the most part). Sometimes it feels like Sohyang is screaming really hard to reach the high note she wants to(doesn’t feel natural), on the other hand Dimash makes it look easy peasy to nail the same difficult high notes despite being a man.

So-hyang is a vocal beast. Soft, strong, powerful, growl, belts, riffs, transitions, high, low, anything and everything else. In my opinion she can't be touched. She blows me away every single time. Incredible. I'm glad to see you've reacted to at least one full song (Arirang) of hers now too. Her high belts are out of this world, but there is so much more to her. She's just amazing.

She used to hit C6 with a great vibrato while sitting down (the hosts asked her to and she belted C6 out of nowhere), she sustained A5 in a Oh Holy Night warm up vocals, she sustained D5 smiling lmao, she even sustained Bb5 calmly while standing for a vocal warm up, she warms up to A6. Honestly, she's a beast.

I swear the S in Sohyang stands for SUPPORT. 😁 I'm glad the originator of the compilation video being reacted to included non-televised, low quality fancams too, which settle any doubt of Sohyang's actual capabilities. It's also great that you pointed out there's tons of practice not just talent behind those capabilities. As for lack of worldwide fame, I think Sohyang and many great masters of many art forms share the same fate that they will be only remembered and appreciated beyond their time. But, rest assured, Sohyang will be recognized by future generations of vocal pedagogy historians as one of the legends of our era. She's already considered a living legend by those who know her now. I'll be looking forward for part 2.

If you follow her career you will see how much improvement she made from her early days until now. She got Seth Riggs as a vocal couch around about 2010 or so and she says he taught her how to properly mix her voice. She became the master of mixed voice after that. Some of those high notes on Arirang Alone towards the end of the video are earlier attempts. She had the raw talent but most was self-taught up until then. I think she is one of the best but least known female vocalists of the decade. She is also a cancer survivor and only sings songs that mean something to her and sings to make people happy. She has rejected large labels as she doesn't want that kind of fame and she controls what she does. She is very famous in Korea though and spreading via KZbin and those TV shows she took part on like Immortal Songs.

She did say in an interview that he taught her mixed voice, so I imagine that would take longer than 2 hours-but who knows, So Hyang is incredibly intelligent and talented, maybe she can learn in 2 hours what takes lesser mortals far longer!

She said not long ago that she used immortal song competitions to teach herself and experiment with different techniques. When she was preparing a song 'lean on me' she was experimenting with breath support and dynamics, that's why she used many transitions at the beginning of the song and portrayed excellent dynamics.

Hey Justin! Glad you've found Sohyang! I've made a couple of playlists of Sohyang's performances. I tried not to use official videos as much as possible, because I am Singer versions have very long intros and don't have a translation. They tend to block videos if you don't do extensive cuts or alter the pitch etc. And also i wanted to include videos with english subs whenever possible. Here is I am Singer 2 playlist (her first major competition, which she was invited in). I cut off I have nothing version from it, because in comparison to later versions she was really nervous and it wasn't as polished. I think you can freely react to Where are you, It's only my world, Running in the sky, 2012 Dream (black outfit). Actually, although Sohyang has amazing brain-vocal coordination, she is often sick and she is almost never using earpieces, so it makes her go off-pitch sometimes. It doesn't really affect the quality of the song, but it would be fair to say that obviously she isn't perfect everytime. It's hard to get this sort of coordination when you are healthy, but she needs to have it also for the times she is sick, that's basically a ton of extra work under poor mental condition. My good friend and opera singer once said, that the trick to have such coordination is really simple - because you can't control your tiny muscles which connect vocal chords, you need to visualize the sound which you want to make and then you practice. A lot. Many years. Current state of opera and singing in general is quite poor in that respect (and has a lot of myths), everyone wants a shortcut but there is none.

Immortal Song is a competition program in Korea wherein there are contestants everyweek (all celebrities/singers even kpop acts are sometimes invited) they are going to compete with songs related to the category given to them. Sometimes, they also invite legendary singers to judge them by singing his songs but mainly the point is to win the audiences bcs they will vote who wins after each round.

This is not the right video to enjoy her songs. You must listen the whole song of hers to appreciate her story telling. These piecemeals highlights are great but it pales beside enjoying a full song. She has more than 20 great songs - chills and goosebumps, and these highlighted ones are not amongst my top 8 of that 20.

Hi Justin, I really enjoyed your reaction videos! I know, she is tremendous. But also I hope you know she is much more than that. She is a total package of amazing musicality, interpretations, and techniques.
