My Surly Corner bar setup

Just a short rundown of my experience with the Corner handlebar so far
Plus modifying it to amplify its usability
Handlebars: Surly Corner bar 54cm
Grips: Seal Bmx tiedye
Bartape: Olive drab cotton
Stem: BBB highrise (not necessary for most setups, I changed to the Corner bar from Surly Sunrise riser bars though)

Have you seen the new Koga Denham handlebar? It is pretty exactly what you were trying to do with your setup. btw. I used a 70cm wide 9° MTB flatbar and put the bar ends (the ones you have in your video) on the inner side between shifters and brakes and some Specialized S-Works Roubaix tape around it. It works perfectly! Excellent for MTB trails and including a nice aero position.

@@toastyrides hey guys what you both are saying is really inspiring, currently on my fattie I have a Kyote with ergo barend grips (that has a good backsweep so at least hands don't get numb) but as I do gravel and I love drops, and really want to try them on a fattie, I can't wait for the Corner to actually be released...! Toasty it's the first video of yours I'm finding, sorry if I missed some previous story (will catch up and I like your diy here too), but may I ask you where you got them from, pleeeeeeez? 😁 from Italy gotta say many i hear are skeptical about the weight and i would indeed prefer alloy (and in the Philipines a serious rider already already did some replica/copy very popular therel but well i'd rather go surly of big tested brands really) but just can't wait and noone knows any actual release dates (roughly of course)... cheers :) !

Thank you! 🤙 the Kyote bar is very comfortable, I just put mine onto my newest build (the Jamis Dragon) as they had been sitting for a while not used. yeah I would hope they’ll do a version 2 and make some adjustments and offer an alloy version, too. I got mine from BlueLug, Japan, but they are now sold out. They released in some countries last month I think, but in small numbers and most places sold out quickly (my country sold out before the release date! 😂). Yeah definitely with Surly I have no worries about strength 👌 especially being steel! Haha. I hope you like the other videos, if you do watch them sometime! Greetings from New Zealand!

@@toastyrides hey mate, i'm back after this couple of days because i'm actually left with one more question... in the Philippines they're full of surly corner replicas, but what is interesting is that some of these copies (that's how they openly call them) are said to be alloy - and lighter. Not that they're so much close to you either, but have you heard of those? (You easily find clips around yt as well). Since you have "the real McCoy" i may guess you'd favour yours, but it's still worth asking :) take your time. Thanks always!! :)

I am with you on this. I'm a little concerned about the reliability of this mod. I wish Surly would just leave them long and then let the customer or shop cut to length.

I just modded my knockoff aluminum corner bars exactly like you did. I used an old set of Bontrager race lite magnesium bar ends and cut them so a little bit of the curve remained. I used the We The People Supreme bar end plugs, and filed the bar ends to fit just like you did. It worked awesome and was pretty easy to do. Thank you for the great tip!

Good idea with extensions I definitely like you’re idea of welding a longer piece on with an outward sweep though

Make a foam form for the desired extension shape. Cover with CF & epoxy. Vacate form, & extend CF/Epoxy into Surly's horn ends, which should bond well. Yep, then you'd have your custom-fit extension done-right :-)

I have a set of old school drops that I cut down to make Bullhorns. If I can get bar ends clamped at the bend the Geo would not be dissimilar to your set up but a truck load narrower. 🤔 Hmmmm. Nice hack. 👍 I'm off to bodge😃

I gave it a go with some Uno Advanced Project bar ends. I managed to shove one on but the clamping bolt is too short to tighten it up, I believe that if you were going off road the shorter reach with more leverage would be great but not having the brakes to hand is , yeah well. I enjoyed messing around, thanks for the inspiration 👍.

for the extender, i think i be using grip rings and slotted them in,. it won;t be looking glorious but i hope that will work.

I have replica from china and I must say very comfy position's and you can feel while driving that there is less air resistance

Controltech makes a 22.2mm bar end extensions 20mm each side that would increase the length for extra room for your hands at hoods.

Yeah there weren’t any around at the time, and 20mm isn’t much but MGP do some longer ones (that also weren’t in stock haha)

One might actually then just go with bullhorn bars. You would have to turn the levers around so the brake lines run backwards along the bar. And the thumbshifters would have to be swapped left-right.

Control tech Terminator is one, but it’s only 20mm long. MGP Tight As Bar extender for scooters is about 50mm. But a DIY one can be any length 🤌

Thanks for the video, I have never used drop bars but was looking for possible bar options for extra hand positions/comfort on my Kona Dew and might give this Surly bar a shot.

Thanks for checking it out! Sounds like a good plan, this isn’t too different like dropbars would be. There are also bars like the VeloOrange crazy bar, or Jones Loop bar that you might be interested in 🤙 the Koga Denham bar looks comfy, too!

I put the surly corner bars on my kona dew fs - but I also switched the front forks to rigid carbon ones. I used an adjustable stem to raise the bars up and inwards for a shorter reach and more upright ride. I love them. I also switched to a hollowtech bb and went microShift 1x10 with a 40 to 11-48 drive.

Zniino makes the chinese version of those cornerbars. way more affordable, and actually build to modern standards, do'nt know why surley would charge 140$ for theirs. you can also build your own with a cruiser handlebar and so mtb extensions.

If you use a shim, the bar is 22.2 so would need a 1.6mm shim to fit the 23.8 road shifter. I don’t know if the road shifter would suit the curve of the bar, I think it would be too aggressive. It’s meant to convert mtb’s to “dropbar” with mtb components

Really appreciate what you did here. About the extension: Why not use a suitable bolt with the extender nuts from an old quill stem instead of that pricey extender lock? Too big for the space? Too much weight? As soon as I saw the lock nut I thought of extender nuts on a quill. Thanks.

Thanks! Yeah one of those could work, if you modified it a bit as it’s too large. But then you have to also make a piece for it to spread/wedge up against that fits the inside diameter of the handlebar. It would’ve been possible, and complicated, but the barend I used was perfect for the job👌

I would love to see some more detail on how you made the extensions. I understand the concepts but I can figure out how you attached the clamp to the extension bar. You mentioned JB weld but I’m unsure of how you used it. Any help would be much appreciated!

My criticism of the Surly bar is that it slips in the handlebar clamp because it's only 25.4mm and it's steel. The Chinese knock off doesn't do that because it's 31.8mm and aluminum.

That sounds like there’s a tolerance issue with your stem, I haven’t had that problem at all. But fair enough I guess, would be annoying if it happened to me too.

@@toastyrides It did happen with the steel bar but it's never happened with the alu bar, same stem. Once it happened I felt uneasy about using it. I don't worry at all with the alu bar. Cheers!

Why nobody puts brakes and shifters on the top bar (flat) ... and use corners/drop just for handling .... like your extension - it would be even better if they would be slightly bent up like the one you cut :)

The outer ends...do your hand ever go there? Seems you could trim 5cm each side. I run a simple inverted trekking bar and it's damn near perfect. I will give it a go to ovalive the near-the-stem position that I seem to use most for aero reasons but numb up my hands. I did a little test with some strips of foam stacked up to the fore and aft faces of a section of bar. On top of that, a rubber grip cut open like you have in this video, and then a cork bar wrap of sorts.

What if you had revert the handle bar in 'up" position? I do find the drop handle below gets the grip hold in the way. I always ignore the norm.😜

Hey! It’s a 35 degree stem from memory and I think it’s the 75/80mm version (it has no measurements on it). But because of the angle it only equals about 65mm of reach.

Yeah Surly really screwed this up. Heavy steel and not enough extension for what is the most widely used part of a dropbar: riding on the hoods.

I think they did a great job but they could’ve made it near perfect. They can definitely make it better in version 2 👌 I think they tried to keep it simple, for flatbar riders but they compromised haha

Yup Surly tried. At least they’re the 1st company to address the desires of flatbar riders who longed to convert to drops but were intimidated by the cost. Still could’ve tested the form factor first before launching but they were probably under a deadline to release it.

@@dorianblue4229 hmm it’s tough to say 🤔 definitely the “hood” or “nub” extension like I did. I think the angle and drop are a good medium for people. And I like how it doesn’t change reach by much, especially compared to regular drops! One with a bump in the drop, like Ritchey Venturemax, would be lovely 😂 I love that bump!!

And yeah i have an aussie Walmer 60-75 on the graveller and a funn g-wide 50 on the basic tourer, but i know all my local friends are crazy for that drop bump!
