I have no idea why people are so obsessed with “modern” bikes, when there’s stuff like this still being used. Very nice.
@toastyrides4 күн бұрын
Beats me! Warranties maybe? 🤔 There are some cool modern bikes out there though, just cost a whole lot more than modifying an old one 😅
@jonmarshall15024 күн бұрын
@ I love my old looking but new Surly 😂 . Most people don’t want to work on their new stuff anymore and have lost the satisfaction of fixing perfectly good older bikes.
@timtaylor95903 күн бұрын
I'm a fan of modern bikes with old tech like mechanical shifting and universal standards. The goal is simple, comfortable while still performing at the highest level. Vintage bikes just can't keep up with the new ones and they're less comfortable and possibly more dangerous depending on how rowdy you want to get
@toastyrides3 күн бұрын
That’s the sweet spot and can mix it up with some old stuff too, or modern drivetrain but still with mechanical shifters etc 👌
@jonmarshall15023 күн бұрын
@@timtaylor9590 ahh universal standards, I nearly forgot about them. 😬
@uncLays3 күн бұрын
Finally watched this. Such a great build. The rust converter to touch up paint really makes a difference in the way it presents! I personally like the patina on most old bikes but I guess they do need to be protected so we can keep enjoying them.

The triangular shaped handlebar looks great with the GT frame.

Haha I agree, 4 triangles now! 😂

That friction shifter mod is super cool, with the modern derailleur truly defines "neo-retro", friction is king!
@toastyrides3 күн бұрын
Friction shifter for life! 😎💕 would be cool if there was a “pull extender” mod for them, like gear it up so it can pull a bit more cable 🤔 would have to be a larger diameter I guess

Love the creative rear brake stop. Best solutions sometimes DIY.

Your videos always make me want to build up another bike, but I don't need another bike.
@toastyrides3 күн бұрын
But do you have space for another bike? 👀 😂

24:45 oh no! you forgot the most important part: the spoke protector (aka the dork disc!)
@toastyrides4 күн бұрын
If they started making coloured dork discs I’d probably use one 😅 haha, but with that said I’ve seen derailleurs bust right through the disc and get sucked into spokes 😵💫

I set up a cues 9speed with friction for a friend and it works pretty well with an older shimano 9speed cassette. The only issue really is th learning curve, since she wasn't familiar with friction so having to get acquainted with not having the indents for each gear.
@toastyrides4 күн бұрын
Oh sweet, good to know thanks! I’ll swap it out to a Cues setup when this chain gets worn and see how the Cues goes 😎 yeah it takes a bit of getting use to, pretty fun and reliable when you do though!

Did you DIY your front mudflap or did you buy one? If it's a DIY one, what materials did you use?
@toastyrides3 күн бұрын
It’s just a cut down seat mounted one, like an Ass-Savers one more or less 🤙 if you’ve got a spare rubber car mat those can work too if you get the cheap thin ones, can sometimes find them pretty cheap. I’ve used an ice cream container lid, too
@landematt4 күн бұрын

Very nice build!! ❤love it What’s the front fender toe protector you used? I’m lookin for one in just straight black and decent length
@toastyrides4 күн бұрын
This is just one of those fenders that clips under your seat, cut down to suit! I had a few sitting around doing nothing and it’s the perfect material 🤙
