Tobacco burst finish is killer when you burn it back n forth into the colors and take Hairs and run streaks . Kinda like a old weather fence where colors fade into one another

Every time I see a burst getting laid down with dye, I have a little "oh no! Its not going to blend" moment... Then they always come around at the end.

I restore furniture and use mineral spirits to lighten or dilute stain on the wood so it can be blended into darker color stain. Good job here!!

Hi from sunny old England, is there any chance you could do a tobacco burst on a flamed maple top using the same leather dyes please. Thanks
@sergioderderian164 жыл бұрын
Just amazing....👍👍👍 I whish I could do that on my acoustic guitar project....... thanks!!

Do you do any finishing over the dyes or is that final?
@johnnypk19636 жыл бұрын
Dig it. Stain Master D. Finish would look good on a JD barrel guitar too. I realize rough nature of the wood for those guitars probably makes that difficult or impossible. Just a thought.

I noticed him, too, and being a blues fan, I saw he was groovin’ hard on one song. Daddy D’s gonna have to make him a mini-Strat to get him started. Tobacco burst all the way, of course.

@JeffGillis16 жыл бұрын
Turned out fantastic! To lock in that color with an oil finish would you add a Poly/ TruOil blend over that?

Try my stain for that tobacco dark brown .. use 2 blocks of plug tobacco crumble them up put the tabacco into a womans nylon not tight like a ball but loose knot the nylon take a mason jar drop the nylon tea bag in fill to 1 inch from top with ammonia. Cap it and let it set for 3 weeks . Then remove tea bag of tobacco squeeze all the juices into mason jar and test color .. if you want it darker replace the bag of tobacco for another week .. for my knife handles like ash id take a tsp of asphalt emultion to darken to the deep brown I wanted .. dont worry it wont wreck the finish and laquer wont bubble .

If i want to do this on an alder body guitar, do i have to "treat" the wood with anything before using the dye, or is the dying going directly on the wood? and when i am finished with the dye, do i have to use any finishing product or concealer?
@chrismillett4 жыл бұрын
Yes - same question about finishing.
@garysanders31932 жыл бұрын
With those colors you are using, do you need to do a clear coat? I have a Fender Precision bass that is a Highway One series that didn't come with a clear coat and love it. I want to try and do the same to get that 2 or 3 color burst. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I do find vintage tobacco bursts rather boring, but... at around 9:30 that finish looked almost as bad as a recent Gibson "stock photo" finish, and at 11:00 with the extra coat of yellow it's a whole lot more vibrant. Guess that's what Gibsons are missing, haha. Maybe you could have added even a second coat of yellow at the end ? or wouldn't that have helped ?
@PelleKuipers6 жыл бұрын
Without lacquer on top it won't pop. So the second coat of yellow isn't necessary; the finish will make the color stand out even more :)

Very cool finish - looks great. Curious - do you wipe on due to lack of spray equipment, ease of application, or some other reason? (I wiped dye in my first after watching some of your vids and it came out great but the sprayed nitro...curious about pros and cons)

I did a burst like that watching your videos and wanted to thank you for your great tutorials , I have a question will i be able to lock in the colors using just tru-oil or using sending sealer first its a must ?

Im curious about creating stained oils using Windsor Newton oil paints mixed with TruOil. Have you ever done a guitar finish with stained oils?
@ccchicken88896 жыл бұрын
Looks nice. When you say you used a vacuum to clean it up, is that the method to pick up all the steel wool shavings? Can it get stuck in the grain?
