Whole Families join in when tobacco needs to be harvested. Husbands, wives, daughters and sons help in whatever way they can. Little ones may bring the tobacco sticks out to the older siblings who space them out on the ground for the grownups to use. Lancaster County has a rich traditon in growing tobacco. The Amish have been growing it for almost 200 years. One of the tobacco types grown is called PA 41. A tobacco that is almost exclusively grown in Lancaster County. Another tobacco grown in Connecticut. Both of these are cigar wrapper tobacco varieties. Grown for large perfect leaves that will make the grade as cigar wrappers. Another type grown is Burly tobacco. This is the tobacco with the familiar yellow color as it nears ready for harvesting. This tobacco is used for chewing tobacco as well as filler for cigarettes and cigars. Tobacco has been the cash crop for decades. It has paid off many farm mortgages as well as kept land developers at bay as the farmer has been able to generate an income to supplement down years in the dairy industry.
