Tobacco Review - Capstan Blue (Ready Rubbed)

Like the milder-bodied Capstan Yellow, Capstan Blue was originally created by W.D. & H.O. Wills of Bristol well over a century ago. It's remained a favorite to countless pipe smokers across generations (J.R.R. Tolkien having been on of its most noted aficionados), a testament to the quality of this fine Virgina flake, here offered in ready-rubbed form.

Capstan Blue is a great blend; I've enjoyed the flake version for well over 30 years. I haven't tried the ready rubbed. I tried the Gold flake version for the first time just this last summer. I loved it as well. A more citrus flavor profile for me; lovely for summer weather. A good review, thanks! This blend deserves more than 2 stars IMHO! Gary

@@andylucas6962 Hi Andy, I've always enjoyed a bowl of Blue. I know my tastes have changed over the years; but I still enjoy it's rich, dark fruit notes.

Capstan Blue was Tolkien's favorite. I like it a lot too, very good. My favorite blend I just bought a week ago before I went down to Mexico to visit my sister and brother-in-law, SPC's Mississippi River. I smoked it for the first with my brother-in-law and sister and it had the perfect mix of latakia and perique, tasting just like the smell of rafting down a river.

i dont think ive ever smoked the ready rubbed but ive smoked a lot of the capstan gold flake and last summer i thoroughly enjoyed a tin of the blue. if i had to choose between the two I'd just have to flip a coin and go with it. i enjoyed your review

Nice review man. I love all 4 of the Capstan blends. I noticed like you said that the blue ready rubbed is rated 2.8, the lowest of the 4. That's strange because the rest are like 3.5. Thankfully, I tried it when I first started smoking back in 2017 and cellared a good bit of it from the 2013 year. Also, it was a lot cheaper too lol. Like 11 dollars instead of 16.50 now. That's awesome that you found some from that year. For some reason they made a ton of Capstan in that year. It was regularly available from 2013 up until like 2019. People rave about that year, but I really can't compare because all mine is 2013. I need to try some newer stuff and see. Looking forward to the next video. Later.

Never had the ready rub (gonna try it now) but I’ve enjoyed the flake. I once tried a 20 year old tin that a buddy bought in Spain years ago. It was phenomenal to say the least

My favorite tobacco is Rattray's Old Gowrie. It's not a straight VA. It has some perique and I believe burley. What I have is 12 to 14 years old so I can't speak to the newer vintage. I tried OGS quite a few years ago and didn't really find it as great as is the common opinion. I have a couple of tins of it aging to try again. It's definitely quality leaf. I like GL Pease Union Square as a straight VA. Newminster 400 Superior Navy Flake is excellent. I have a tin of Capstan Blue Flake that has a few years on it. Because of your review I'll have to break that one open. Great review.

I never was a huge fan of Virginias but, I recently tried Mac Baren Pure Virginia. Not like any Virginia I ever tried. By the 3rd bowl I was convinced this was going to be in my rotation. As for as codger blends, I think they are all just so so. Not much flavor, not much strength however, Amphora has recently came out with killer Virginia, Burley, and Kentucky blends all included in their sampler pack with an English blend and spicy cavendish. All great. But don't forget to also try the Original. Price is right. Good luck. Looking forward to your reviews on these.

All tobacco seems to be getting more pricey that it was 10-15 years ago. Seems to be about a 30 to 40% increase in that time from what I can tell.
