Why the caged bird sings is reference to the autobiography of Maya Angelo. I was privileged to meet her when I was in 3rd Grade. She is one of the main inspirations for me writing poetry, and writing in general. I share the poem I wrote when I learned of her passing. May 28, 2014. "Homage to Maya Angelo" Silence befalls the garden, where you ran. Speakers play only static, where your words echoed. Blessed be those, who have borne witness. Heartfelt tears fall deftly, upon the earth. May your spirit be lifted. By the song of a million birds. I have known why. Why, the caged bird sung. Now I know why. Why the Angels do. -JBM-
