Tobias Churton here. These podcasts stay up a long time, so I should like to add that my thoughts about Brexit were transmitted in a very different political and social atmosphere, when the principles at stake seemed more vivid than the political consequences of entrusting national welfare to the care of politicians of uneven ability and doubtful principle. Having seen the appalling conflicts in the Commons last year (2019) and the governance since, I am no longer able to say that a country is more likely to prosper under its own government, when that government is so extraordinarily divided. The "people" in general have an instinct for moderation and sense, undermined by nationalist sentiments of conflicting regional and ideological interests. As one person suggested: what's the difference between poor governance from abroad, and the same in one's "own" country? Was Britain better off under Roman rule would be a rough analogy and question. Can we trust our future and present to ANY government that is driven by concerns distant from its population? So, in basic terms, I personally should not be pro-Brexit were the issue put to a vote again. The individual is more sovereign than either London or Brussels, but this leaves open the question of whether a person can be re-presented at all. Oh what a long way we have to go!

Meditations on the Tarot - ah, be still my beating heart! This was my introduction to the Western Mystery Tradition in 1996 and is a book I've returned to again and again in my life - truly a font of sublime spiritual wisdom, I ran a Yahoo group about it for years

Thank you both for your time, your thoughts and your honesty. As a retired academic myself I appreciated your very good interview which for me highlighted valuable points to ponder over. It was good to hear Tobias Churton's clarity on Gnosticism and the quote about reason being a gift from spirit. I have located the four episodes of the Channel Four programme referred to in the interview and will watch and learn with great interest as a Gnostic myself. I am also a Rosicrusian, a Martinist and FRC and want to know more about the real Aleister Crowley so will track down Tobias's biography of him. Any ideas for another conversation? Thanks again, George Allan in New Zealand.

I really enjoyed watching this video. I came across Tobias via the book he mentioned linked to the TV series. As a Psychotherapist I have been pondering on the connection of psychotherapy and spirituality and in particular the link to The Gnostics. It was good to hear Tobias and he certainly made me think and smile . I will be reading more of his work!

Re the OGPU, my latest book, The Eidolons (Shin Publications), includes official reporting from their dramatic bust of the order EMESH Redivivus, inaugurated by the Martinist master, G.O. Mebes (himself sent to a Gulag in 1924 in the infamous case of the Leningrad freemasons) and continued in Moscow by Chekhov and Teger in the 1920s.

This is just fantastic. Great to hear logical, non sensationalist discussion about Crowley. Tempted to buy churtons book now, tho I heard he's a little too forgiving of Crowleys transgressions. I've just finished perdurabo which was a good read.

Why would it matter if Churton was a "little too forgiving" ? You are the one who can survey all the information from many sources and come to your own conclusion.

Because obviously if I am to spend my own hard earned money, I desire a non biased, impartial documentation of the man's life. not the one sided support of a 'fan'.
@thenowchurch64194 жыл бұрын
@@stevebb2915 99.9 % of people, including authors, have some degree of bias. I find it beneficial to learn from the detractors, the fans and the rare objective sources myself. I find Churton to be friendly to Crowley, but not a fan.

I've read do what thou wilt, a magick life and perdurabo so I think I pretty much done with his story tbh. Yes so infuriating. I wonder if he was high functioning aspergers. May read regardies book on him at some point.

Dunno if I agree about the Brexit stuff... So we've just changed who we get shafted by... Great!, That's been worth 2 years of division. However I came here via reading the channel 4 tie in book about the Gnostics... Interesting interview.

Yee is an island! to put that into Brexit thing is a load of shite. ...However i love Tobias Churton's point of view and how he has put Crowley in a great shine which is tbh a rounded way to put Crowley, to put your Brexit on top of it is fucking silly! I love Churton's work! But leave your Brexit ideas at the door with the Tiler!!!

Crowley repels me. Tomberg helped me identify why. I am very grateful for your recommendation, John, of "Meditations on the Tarot" by Valentin Tomberg.( I found a free pdf of it online, which I'd link here but now I can't find it anymore!) Insight after insight, Tomberg opens head and heart together. Many of his letters on the Arcana describe the dangers along the hermetic path, including the megalomania (the Chariot) that Crowley seems to have sucumbed to. Exquisite practical spiritual exercises revealed thru each arcanum! Thanks again for the conversations and the book suggestions you slip in, John!!
