Tobin and Christen return with a supersized episode of The RE-CAP Show! After watching the USWNT tie Portugal in a heart pounding 0 to 0 World Cup match, they discuss what they saw and what they would like to see in the Round of 16. Later, Tobin has a conversation with NWSL and Welsh international star, Jess Fishlock, for her thoughts on the game and the US performance as well. Then, they are joined by friend and teammate, USWNT defender Abby Dahlkemper, for an insightful interview on playing in a toxic environment, prioritizing your mental health, “The Year of Abby D.” and so much more. Finally, Tobin sits down with an “off the field gamechanger,” Ally CMO, Andrea Brimmer to learn about what Ally is doing to provide a more equitable playing field in Women’s Sports. And, as always, community questions, a Japan / Norway prediction and Tobin’s Top Things!

Tobin Heath just letting you know that you were quoted and named checked on British TV coverage of the USA vs Portugal about you comment that the USA cannot just outmuscle teams anymore and have to become more technical and tactically sophisticated. If you said that, you are the only person speaking the truth in the US soccer who are either being to delusionally positive or scapegoating the coach for the rest of the world catching up and surpassing the Usa tactically and technically.

I would rather listen to Tobin’s and Christen’s razor sharp post-match assessments than literally any current women’s soccer commentator out there to date. They strive to keep their emotions out of their observations (& own up to it when they can’t) and, good lord, I feel like this is mana from heaven. THIS is what we have been thirsting after for a long time: two USWNT veterans giving us the real deal. It goes without saying their commentator chemistry is off the charts, which makes them that much more the perfect fit for the WWC2023 breakdowns. I foresee a sports tv contract in their future (& ESPN, FOX SOCCER, etc would be fools not to see how successful their YT cast is going to be).

@@postcardsfromprotest the impact of the pay to play nature of US soccer is overstated in my opinion. Youth American football, basketball, and baseball are all becoming more and more pay to play but it hasn’t hindered development. If anything, it has made it better. The real problem with youth soccer is that kids aren’t fans of the sport. There is a significant disparity between the number of parents that watch soccer and the number of parents that sign their kids up to play soccer. If kids aren’t watching the game, emulating their favorite players, dreaming of playing professionally, etc. no amount of development will put them ahead of the kids who are. The pay to play factor doesn’t stop a kid from going outside to kick a ball around, but not being a fan does.

Wow, this had so much in it! I always love Tobin’s moments at the beginning and this episode was no exception, the dry wit delivery is spot on. Who else got emotional over Christen and Abby sharing their experiences with abusive coaches? Damn. Thank you to Tobin for pulling Christen out of that situation, and encouraging her to go to Sweden. It’s dreadful that because of escaping abuse Christen wasn’t called up to the national team again for years. I remember hearing commentators during broadcasts making remarks about how she should be playing at Houston, and how it was wrong not to be. I hope each of them wrote Christen an apology when the abuse scandal was revealed. If they haven’t and they just watched this episode, then there’s no time like the present to ask for forgiveness.

As an outsider observer, I feel like the questioning of mentality was very much in bad faith. It seems to me the healthiest and competitively viable option to not be lamenting a disappointing performance, but focusing on the next game - which the USWNT is obviously doing. I also think not enough credit is being given to our backline's discipline in stopping the group stage opponents from pulling ahead and giving them consistently poorer chances. Still love the insights, and thanks to everyone for their input and letting us fans get a deeper look into the game!

Could not agree more. When Lloyd retired she made scathing comments about the USWNT policy focus on supporting women's rights. Now they're playing badly she's using that as biased confirmation for her stance in entirely bad faith, instead of seeing the lack of cohesion as the poor coaching and tactics it is. This is one of the few times it's fair to describe a person as behaving like a complete and utter cunt

Incredible episode. Love how many awesome guests are getting involved! Jess Fishlock has such a brilliant soccer mind too. I hope that one day we get to see Tobin, Jess, and Miedema all leading their own teams to glory as coaches. And thank you to Press and Abby for your vulnerability in talking about your experiences with abusive coaches. ❤

@@jontupper9365I’m wondering if there is a big rivalry between Canada and USA in soccer. Tobin did that funny bit at the beginning as though she was gloating a little over Canada being eliminated. Heaven knows how huge the hockey rivalry is.

I totally agree, Tobin. Colombia's #9 Ramirez reminded me of you. Smart, inventive, physical, and had perpetual energy. I have watched the COL vs GER match replay at least 5 times. Las "Cafeteras" were fearless.

Another fantastic episode! Not only do I love Tobin and Christen breaking down the USWNT games, but every episode brings something so different in personal and team stories, professional stories, and the way forward for women and women’s sports. I can’t say enough how grateful I am for this show and how it’s enormously informative and empowering.

| Tobin defending Crystal Dunn from the nonsensical stray she caught in the post game yesterday was top tier. Imagine being the best in the world while having played out of position, only to be dismissively disrespected on that kind of level. moments like that from alleged game analysts are super telling, but mostly just insane.

Now this is useful constructive criticism. Praying for USWNT to go on so that I can watch more of this show! Hope Vlatko is watching and learning. Thanks Tobin and Christen! Jess still believing in the team gives me a bit hope.

I've been a huge fan of Tobin Heath for a while now, so it's great to see her here. This is a great show and I'm thrilled to see actual World Cup team members talk intimately about the team's tactics with great insight. Keep up the great work with this show! EDIT: I had to make sure I mentioned how much I think Tobin has a future in coaching. Brilliant football mind.

Your comments about no tactical changes in the past year is so true. I am a huge USWNT supporter and fan of the woman’s game in general. I love watching women’s football. Over the past year I have watched The England squad surpass the USWNT tactically because we have stayed static while the changed managers and moved forward. I believe both countries have the same amounts of massive talent but they have used their strengths better. Also the Jess tactical session was an awesome segment. Thanks for doing these shows!

Please create a segment called "The Back Room" (Laura Harvey interview reference) in which you break down a game with both Football IQ and Feelings. When you both did that about the Portugal game it was BRILLIANT! Best analysis I've heard. And then with Jess Fishlock...AWESOME! And please do not stop doing this show after the World Cup ends. I'm hooked

I'd really love to hear more about tactics and strategy analysis. Like really get into the details with examples to show what you're explaining. I wasn't ever good enough to be on teams where these kinds of things were talked about by the coaching staff, and it feels like I'm missing out on a big factor of being able to enjoy games without it

I didn’t know anything about tactics, formations or player roles until I started playing Football Manager. 😆 It doesn’t include women players yet, but the tactical stuff is the same for men and women. It surprised me how much more I enjoyed watching soccer after learning the basics from Football Manager.

The talk with Jess is incredibly informative, and more people should be looking at soccer this way....balance and formations are the cornerstones of success. Any player at the level should be able to adjust relatively easily to formation changes, that leads to a more balanced attack and defense. Of course this should be practiced and constructed before a world cup. There isn't nearly enough of these changes and adjustments made in big competitions like this....and it shouldn't be difficult for the players.
