Yes this was after 9/11. This was the beginning of the feud with the then “Dixie” Chicks. Natalie Maines spoke against Toby for his patriotism on this song and his support of our military. She was extremely outspoken against Bush and our military response to the attacks. She even wore t-shirts with F U TK . Needless to say country fans didn’t appreciate her remarks and country radio completely stopped playing their music, hence them dropping Dixie and becoming simply the Chicks.

Toby Keith was supposed to appear at the Capitol 4th of July celebration after September 11th and was going to sing this song. Peter Jennings from ABC News was hosting and said he couldn't sing the song because it was too angry and combative. Toby said if he couldn't sing that he wouldn't come to the Capitol 4th. When asked about it at an interview later he was asked about Peter Jennings. He said, well he's Canadian. And left it at that. As far as he was concerned, if you weren't an American then you probably wouldn't get the sentiment of the song. I have heard that Toby wrote the song specifically for the troops and did not intend to release it to radio. However, one of the higher ups in the Marines (?) told him he needed to release the song to the public. It actually changed radio in that other songs edited out inappropriate words, but you couldn't leave out the "Boot in the Ass" part of this.

Yes Toby wrote this song in response to 911, he wrote a couple patriotic songs after 911. Toby is very big on Patriotism, the U.S., and the military. his father served. Toby does a lot of USO tours and spent a lot of time overseas with the troops. As far as y'alls comments about rock and country not being so different. With new Country they aren't. Country music always tells a story. But in newer Country music there are plenty of Electric Guitars, lots of drums and heavy Solo's. Keith Urban is one of the most famous Country singers, but he is also one of the best Guitar players on the planet, and his songs generally have heavy guitar solos. Y'all should check out: For You, God Whispered Your Name or Out The Cage. Brad Paisley is also a killer Guitar player, some good songs of his are: Remind Me, He Didn't Have To Be, I'm Gonna Miss her. Tim McGraw "Live Like You Were Dying", Luke Bryan "What Makes You Country", Rascal Flatts songs: Banjo, What Hurts The Most, Bless the Broken Road, Life is a Highway, Changed, etc.

On March 24, 2001, Toby's father, Hubert Keith (H.K.) Covel, was killed in a car accident. That event and the September 11, 2001 attacks prompted Keith to write the song "Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue (The Angry American)", a song about his father's patriotism and faith in the USA. It took him 20 minutes to write the song. Keith noted that the song was written with reference to the war in Afghanistan, claiming to be indifferent on other conflicts, "but you don't have to listen but once to the words to understand that the song was strictly for Afghanistan". "I have no stance on the Iraq war," he continues, "but the second [that I say], Ι have no stance there, I'm not smart enough to tell whether we should be in there or not". At first, Keith refused to record the song and only sang it live at his concerts for military personnel. The reaction was so strong that the Commandant of the Marine Corps James L. Jones told Toby Keith it was his duty as an American citizen to record the song. "It's your job as an entertainer to lift the morale of the troops," Jones said to Toby Keith. "If you want to serve, that is what you can do. As the lead single from the album Unleashed (2002), "Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue" peaked at number 1 on the country charts over the weekend of July 4.

Actually when Toby Keith went over to do tours in Iraq and Afghanistan he didn't go with the USO. He actually paid to fly his ban, himself and maybe one or two other artists over there to perform for the troops to help keep their morale up. His song Courtesy of the Red White and Blue (The Angry American) he never intended to actually release to the public he only intended to sing it for the troops but someone high up in the Marine Corps persuaded Toby Keith to record the song and release it on an album so that way everybody could hear that song. Toby Keith's not only does a lot for the military but he also does a lot for the community around Moore, Oklahoma where he lives. Any time there is a tornado in Moore, Oklahoma he takes in the pets of people affected by the tornadoes until they can get back on their feet in some place to live that allows pets. Toby Keith runs a Dog Rescue on his land that he owns in Moore, Oklahoma and that's why he takes in dogs who's families have been affected by tornadoes.
