I’m new to watercolor and sketching and have learned a lot from your videos. I’ve never noticed how you hold your pen before. That may solve my problem with developing the loose style I love. Thank you.

I really enjoyed your approach to fountain pens. Thank you for sharing. My Safari pen has indentations for finger placement. I am going to try moving my fingers above them.

Great demo and tips! Very well explained! I have just started trying my hand at line and wash but don't really know what I'm doing, so I am calling it "play". Am using a Pigma Micron pen at the moment, but love the idea of using non-watercolor inks. Fountain or dip pens will be my next "play"!

Haha lovely video Toby! Love that Tash is doing agility with Betty, i used to do it with my dog when he was young. Couldn't help but giggle that she was definitely not going to touch the contact on the A frame there 😆 such a hard concept to teach an athletic dog. Good luck to them on that journey! And thanks for more sketching fundamentals

ha yes, we've had a bit of a breakthrough putting a hurdle at the bottom of the contact... she runs under that quite consistently. The other week she launched herself from 2/3rds of the way up, over the top and landed on her face... so we thought we should try something different 🤯

re: tom's studio ink -- as it is an acrylic ink, does it have any flow issues in fountain pens? I've seen it used in calligraphy pens or dip pens and not in typical fountain pens. you do very lovely sketches, and i loved the trick with using a water soluble ink and a wet brush to soften shadow lines
@TobySketchLoose5 ай бұрын
To the best of my knowledge its a pigment ink, not an acrylic ink - it doesn't look like it's currently on sale

Toby What are your thoughts on Fude pens? I love the marks they make but I can’t stop mine from clogging (and I’ve tried lots of different inks). Any tips?

I don't often use one im afraid

I really like using Fude nibs! I'm not sure which pen you're using, but I have several of the HongDian "Forest" pens with Fude nibs and I've not had any issues with clogging! I leave them inked up for months at a time with only short periods of use and have not had any issues other than an occasional hard start when the ink level is low, but I just prime the nib by pushing air out of the cartridge and it starts right up again. I've not tried a waterproof ink in one yet (that's next on the list) but I have used shimmer inks with no issues. Also, not sure if it really makes a difference or if it's just in my head, but I have had better luck with storing my pens nib up, especially with shimmer inks. Hope this is helpful!

Toby, thank you for this video, I am excited to get started trying sketching with a fountain pen. I did have a few questions, first is there an ink cartridge that you can get that has waterproof ink in it? And secondly will all ink cartridges work in all pens or are they specific to the pen? Thank you. :)
@TobySketchLoose5 ай бұрын
there are platinum cartridges for platinum pens with carbon ink, there are at least 4-5 different types, best to check the brand of pen
