This young man plays it with restraint. I truly hate when it is performed as horse race. The harmonies of this composition are subtle and magnificent. It is the performer who has the task of bringing these harmonies to life. Bravo...maestro!

I must say that whist he is a very good player, I do tire of playing this piece as fast as you can. It needs to breath, especially in a large room. I play it much slower...and many think I'm wrong or don't have the ability to play as fast as Diane Bish or Virgil Fox. Just my input.
@martinwright41254 жыл бұрын
particularly so in the section where the swell division carries on the major theme. the piece is so often shabbily treated in the execution, because the organist so often becomes preoccupied w/ expression shades, over/under produced sound, or combinations of myriad distractions. nevertheless, the organist hear caught my attention throughout, and he lead me to hearing a very respectable rendition of this nice little piece. i say bully for him.
@larrymerkle16724 жыл бұрын
@@dleimkuehler I agree. There's a video here of Diane Bish playing this piece, which I think is dreadful.......so heavy-handed, no subtlety and so damned fast, like she has to get through it so fast so she run to catch her plane.

This young man has blown me away playing one of my favourite pieces of music. To be able to play the pipe organ with so much confidence is amazing. To be able to have the right inflections and interpretations of this most beautiful piece is beyond words.

It's so heart warming to see so many young people showing interest in the pipe organ. This young man is amazingly talented and I thoroughly enjoy watching and hearing him. Thank you Olivier Penin........!!!

I am 14 and I have been playing the organ since I was 9. I want to be a concert organist as my career. I would love to play an organ from Cavaille-Coll, because I think they are some of the best instruments in the world. I am currently learning Guilmant's Final from Symphony No. 1.

Bravo, maestro! What wonderful playing. The tempo was restrained which is what the composer would have wanted. And what an impressive instrument - Monsieur Penin effortlessly deals with the pedal work (in his striking sport shoes) and doesn't miss a beat.

Excellent use of split screen! It's good to be able to really watch the musician playing. Maybe --- as is so often the case --- it was taken a little fast, but fortunately not at a racing pace. The high quality sound makes for a superior listening experience, and the organ itself contributes a lot to to this.

On the J.Hamelle Edition 1901 copy its marked Allegro Crotchet beat: 118. Which in the case of this performance it's at the right tempo. However, the new edition was revised and modified by Widor himself. Maybe earlier copies were marked slower?

I agree with Ma Val -- I've just heard an excerpt of Widor playing it himself, and it is DEFINITELY SLOWER. Interesting that so many people are commenting on Penin's "restraint" -- apparently there are those who dash through this wonderful piece! If you can understand French, here's a course on Widor -- the excerpt from the Toccata is not quite 30 minutes in. kzbin.info/www/bejne/noG2k6KXlL6FntE
