🔍 Let’s Talk Lupus!
Lupus is an autoimmune disease affecting people of all ages, but mostly women aged 15-44. Normally our body’s immune system produces proteins called antibodies that protect the body from foreign invaders, such as viruses and bacteria. Autoimmune means your immune system cannot tell the difference between these invaders and your body’s own cells and creates autoantibodies that attack and damage healthy tissue. These autoantibodies cause inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body.
The cause is still a mystery, but genetics, hormones, and the environment might play a role. Symptoms vary - from joint pain to fatigue and rashes. Early diagnosis is crucial to prevent organ damage. While there’s no cure, treatment can help manage symptoms. Lifestyle changes like a healthy diet and rest can make a difference. Researchers are working hard to find better treatments. Let’s raise awareness and support those living with lupus! 💜
This year for World Lupus Day on May 10, 2024 the global lupus community will come together for a day of action that will consist of several activities designed to “Make Lupus Visible” so that the world can learn more about this debilitating disease and join us in the fight against lupus.
