Unscripted isn't unheard of. Christopher Guest's films are also largely unscripted in a similar fashion. They write extensive back stories for the characters that the actors must learn and understand, so they know where to go with the improv when they're doing their scene that they have an outline story for. With the right casting, it's simply brilliant. This is why I find Larry's show and Guest's films to be two of the funniest directions in comedy.
