Why? His children might be better or worse than his contribution to their development either way. His spawn who are better reflections of their own character than his. I would think that you can really tell the character of a man by how the man himself behaves. Why not judge him on his own merit? If he is mean spirited and cruel or insensitive to the suffering of others, or disinterested in those who are not in service of his own personal interests, then any decency exhibited by his children is more likely in spite of his character rather than direct reflection of it. It occurs to me that much of what ails this country is probably due to this reluctance to measure individuals by their own deeds instead of by some other artificial but more easily quantified attributes. What things do you value when you judge someone's character? Their social status or their compassion? Their appearance or their skill? If you think his kids are great , then elect the, when THEY run for office. But take a look at the actual person you intend to put in power, and remember they will be wielding it over YOU first. Do not expect that person to be different towards you than they appear to be towards others.

George Washington was the richest man in the United States of America in his day.
