@@Stadno The fact that Mormons don't often live the plant based lifestyle I think has a lot to do with it. Why report confounders when you're trying to push veganism? They don't normally mention the Okinawans eat lots of pork and they live far enough away that most people don't know any better. I believe the reason why Buettner gets it wrong is not because of a deliberate attempt to deceive, but more likely its another example of what happens when we look at the world through the current medical dietary dogma. After all, if you believe that meat and animal fats are bad for you, then by default you wouldn’t list them as contributors to longevity. Which is a shame because people might continue to be misinformed.. What should we eat to live a long, healthy life? Gina Baker, a writer, farmer, and researcher, who has lived in Costa Rica for over 20 years, went to the Nicoya Peninsula to learn about the traditional diets of centenarians. Her visits and conversations with the centenarians revealed that their traditional diet featured fried pork, pork brains, and lots and lots of lard. Does this surprise you? It definitely runs contrary to what was written up about the Nicoya people in “The Blue Zones.” In that book, their diet was characterized as primarily vegetarian. On today's podcast, Gina does some serious myth-busting about what has kept the centenarians so well, for so long. She also shares secrets that she learned along the way about the key to the longevity, vitality, and strength of the centenarians of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica wisetraditions.libsyn.com/160-centenarian-dietary-secrets www.statinnation.net/blog/2014/8/12/did-dan-buettner-make-a-mistake-with-his-blue-zones. @lepetitenellie3 жыл бұрын
Hi there. You bring up a great point of discussion. One of the Blue Zones that’s a bit of an anomaly is Loma Linda, California. It’s as polluted as you can get with dirty soil and bad air. But why Loma Linda as a Blue Zone? I know religion is a dirty word now but the Seventh-Day Adventist community is the large part of the centenarians in that region. The other Blue Zones are in areas with unique coral in their sea or ancient volcanic ash in their soil, but Loma Linda is hardly a clean place. Loma Linda is often joked as being the garbage dump for all of LA. Yet it’s considered a Blue Zone! In one of the presentations by this author, he said the SDA diet and lifestyle shows achieving the Blue Zone benefits can be done anywhere in the world. SDA diet is largely vegetarian or flexitarian (meat only on special occasions but it’s always Kosher meat), legume-rich, and low caffeine and alcohol consumption if at all. Take out the religious aspect 100% and looking at the diet alone is something anyone in the world can adopt instead of depending on clean air and land. The other part of what you wrote about living alone and rarely eating with others is a good point. A good part of the SDA Blue Zone achievement is the community aspect (just like the Italian zone in this video). However there is an aspect of peace, gratitude and giving that is practiced even if living alone. If you do want to extend your longevity or gain more sense of peace, ask yourself: Do you feel lonely? Do you like living alone because you hate people or because you find contentment in solitude? Are you often angry about where you are in life or are you grateful for what you have? Is there anything stopping you from joining a community? It doesn’t have to be church but maybe a club for a hobby you enjoy, an exercise group, or just volunteering to help at a soup kitchen. Even joining clubs online is a start. No need to answer these questions but things to think about in your own life and sense of happiness. Definitely all the top Blue Zones have in common a sense of happiness with whatever they have in their lives. Notice none of the top zones are wealthy places. If you are interested in Blue Zone benefits in notso clean areas, I encourage you to read the part about Loma Linda in the Blue Zone website: www.bluezones.com/exploration/loma-linda-california/ Cheers!

I moved to a Blue zone from Florida. I am 15 pounds lighter without the gym membership I had in America. People here take anywhere from 1-2 hours and actually sit down at a table, with other people to eat lunch everyday. When I was working in Florida, I got 30 minutes to sit alone in a break room and shove something in my face as fast as possible. It is a completely different lifestyle. I don’t know if it is something that is achievable for everyone in America because of the way that we work though. Companies need to make a decision to invest in their employees health by letting them take a longer lunch breaks. If they improve their employees health, then they can spend less money on employee health plans. But I’m sure some being counter at the corporate office somewhere has drumbeat it into their stupid heads that they are somehow losing productivity by giving Longer breaks. They couldn’t be more wrong though. Not my problem anymore fortunately!

Except the guy who wrote the Blue Zone book lied. He said they were plant-based and they are not. On Ikaria they eat tons of dairy and meat. No cow, but plenty of goat and lamb and it is a significant part of their diet. They also smoke! I'm not saying y'all should start smoking, but really the one thing these Blue Zones all have in common is that they have little to no processed foods or sugary drinks, and only small amounts of sweets. In Okinawa, as healthy as that diet is, they use too much salt. However, they are aware of this and trying to change that. So the take home message is eat from scratch, eat what mother nature provides, and stay away from processed foods, too much salt, and too much sugar. Don't be drinking those sugary beverages, either.

I have a theory. I think the healthiest food in the world is the so called TRADITIONAL food. I wished scientists and doctors focused more on traditional food. 1. Traditional food was created or invented usually in times of hunger, poverty, crisis, war, plague, disease, etc. Traditional food is survival food, the food that stood the test of time, the food that allowed entire populations to survive periods of hunger. So traditional food needs to be healthy, nutritious, cheap and abundant, based on local ingredients. 2. But traditional food usually can taste very bad, sometimes being outright vile and repugnant. Most countries in the world usually have some kind of traditional food. In times of plenty most people tend to underestimate, look down, dismiss or even despise traditional food because it doesn't taste good. But that is really a big mistake, because that is the food that humanity needs to rely on in times of hunger, and also to remain healthy. So it is really important to keep and preserve traditional food, no matter how bad that food may be. In Sweden there is a fermented fish called surströmming, that is considered by many to be the stinkiest food in the world. How is it possible that people eat such a thing? But surströmming has existed for hundreds of years, is nutritious, healthy and cheap. And most certainly it was invented by starving people in times of hunger and poverty. Many people make fun of surströmming because of its foul smell, but very few people seem to realize that surströmming is a super-food that literally saved entire populations from hunger. 3. The biggest problem about traditional food is that it may difficult to replicate in other countries, because it may not taste good and the ingredients may not be as cheap or abundant in different regions or countries. For example it is often said that olive oil is healthy, but olive oil can be very expensive outside Europe. Japanese traditional food uses no olive oil at all. 4. It is ironic that unhealthy food is only available in times of plenty, while in times of hunger the only food available is traditional food. So the richer the country, the more unhealthy the diet becomes. A poor person on the other hand needs to eat healthy food, otherwise he won't survive. So paradoxically, the poorer the person, the healthier the diet, because a poor person simply can not afford to eat unhealthy food. While traditional food is based on local, cheap, abundant ingredients, unhealthy food is usually based on expensive, imported, exotic ingredients. While older generations try to encourage traditional food, younger generations tend to despise traditional food and prefer modern, expensive, unhealthy food. 5. The United States unfortunately does not have a firmly established traditional food, simply because the country is relatively young and has not suffered any major war or disaster or famine or disease. So most of its diet is based on European culture, which may not be the most appropriate for the region. In my opinion the US should look into native American culture, because they probably have a very strong traditional food culture most appropriate for the local conditions.

I don't believe that being social has anything to do with living longer. If a single person were to eat those meals it would be hard-pressed to prove that that person wouldnt live as long as somebody else who has gobs of friends.

@@JakeRichardsong but they are using the information that on the average, most people want to be around other people but if you are not a lonely person and you enjoy being by yourself then that study is not taking into consideration that scenario. Obviously, if you want to be around people and you don't have it you're going to be lonely and it's going to affect your health but if you're totally happy with your life being away from other people you will live just as long as someone who is around everybody all the time.

@janetpattison84744 жыл бұрын
Because of a lot of reasons. People work too much, play too little, have a little time for preparing and shopping for decent food, live a fast-paced life, and suffer the consequences, stress, obesity, sitting all day, not enough exercise, depressed, I don’t know how to prepare decent food, or addicted to junk food, and more. That’s why Americans don’t eat better.

It's a lifestyle. No one wants to commit to it even if will save their life. Complacency, complaining, over opinionated, self absorbed, medicated, over medicated, addictions, lack of moral compass. Brought on by the constant usage of electronics devices dependence of electronics devices, interference of emfs and radio waves, societal breakdowns, government breakdowns, gmo foods, imitation sugar, sugar, advertising bombardment, lack of trust. Or because it's simply human nature and our tendency to conform, behave and live like our surroundings.

One thing Blue Zones fails to mention about these areas that have the most centerrians is that they're all equal distance from the equator they're all they're all near oceans or seas. What this means is their bodies are not stressed by weather changes and they have access to local fresh fish and fresh vegetablesand fruits throughout more of the year. The diet is great just like any Mediterranean diet would be

2:18 That's the key to it all! Not just diet. If you live somewhere there are drug dealers plying their trade, no fancy diet is gonna make you live longer... AND keep the botox out of your face!!

bob rew, but if you don't take the drugs, how will drug dealers being in the area impact your health? Fast food joints are all over the place, but if you don't buy their wares they don't impact your diet/lifestyle.

@@lynnettemurphy8243 Even if you are not a user, it can still affect your life if you live in an area with drug dealers; especially if you get burgled, or mugged where you live. Great book & video but Maria Shriver - using so much Botox & fillers on your face surely is not good for long term health. Botox is basically poison paralysis of your facial muscles to get rid of wrinkles & give a smooth appearance and it is very evident that Maria has had Botox or an alternative on her face & in several areas of face- looks very unnatural,not a good look!

Just eat whole foods, no animal products. Cook the foods you loved as if you were eating meat, just adjust your recipes and sub veggies like mushrooms, tofu, seitan, tempeh for protein, seasoning and sauces made from vegetable stock. Sounds like a an awesome book if you need it and I'm sure it'll help you.

the most important is the overweight what was reduced, and that is not news at all. All western desease are based at having to much visceral fat. Which is a result of overeating, processed food and not enough dayly movement. There is many ways to achieve that weightloss and excercise more. IMF, fasting, carnivore, vegan, all aim at eat less calorie intake and less often so the body gets time to heal. I am not sure at all about reducing the meat. And also found several videos about the blue zones of people that went there and found out they actually eat a lot ot meat. The pork once a week people found out in reality is more then we would eat average a day f.e. Cause they catch a pig and eat it the full weekend together. Amount of meat only 3% that the blue zone story tells is under stress. I found contra video';s claims from people living there, telling they eat a lot of pork and get old with that too. Who should you believe? the story that is common in all camps: no overweight and move. Vegetable carnivore disccussion? try yourself what suits you best i guess.
