Good polyester blends will make your clothing more durable, thats why most socks stills need polyester, even high end silk ones, unless it is a super thick type. However the problem, it is just really hard to know for the consumer where really good polyester is found. Other problems is the microplastic shedding.

100% A high polyester count indicates a poor quality item, coupled with thickness through feeling the garment and construction x

As a custom tailor and as one who works for a major retailer, I can say that I mostly use natural fibers for custom made clothes, but I often find that when natural fibers are added to polyester it improves the performance and structure of the blended fabric. In fact, some of the best mills in Europe produce polyester fabrics that rival natural. Do keep in mind that there are poor quality natural fiber garments as well, where there is a low thread count. I find that most consumers are focused on the style and price over the fit, fibers, or construction, and few have the knowledge to discern the sometimes subtle differences.

Like everything else, it depends. Sometimes you are paying for high quality, or a hand-made item. Sometimes you are just buying a label and a fancy box. Do your research.

Gap cotton long and short sleeve tees used to be fantastic, on the thicker side, didn’t pill…..NOW so thin and not worth the money. So I switched to Eddie Bauer and after one wash the pilling was so bad looked 3 years old after one wash

And this is why I've started thrifting lately. I'm not paying $200 for an acrylic sweater that'll make me sweat like a pig when I can get a one of a kind vintage cashmere piece for 30 bucks.

Most consumers aren't experts in textiles and clothing construction; thus they can only rely on perceived quality based on reputation and personal experience.

A thinner shirt can still be high quality garment. You can just tell when you feel the material. I try to buy Made in Peru, because the quality is superior.

It should be common place for brands to disclose the weight of their garments if that is a determining factor of quality. Since it is doubtful they will, we're much better off shopping our own closets or second hand when possible.

Even incredibly high quality fabrics generally don't cost more than $30-$50 a yard. Considering a jacket uses 1.5 yards and a coat 2 yards, you can see how clothing prices can be incredibly overpriced.

Around 25 years ago, my mom came to visit from NYC, where I grew up, in my new home of Los Angeles. The driving culture alone freaked her out (Me too! Always forgot to feed the meter!!). I took her to TAR-GÉT, knowing she would be in shock by the whole experience. As we walked thru, she kept looking at the tags. Finally, she turned to me and asked, "What are there? Disposable clothes??" (I will never forget that, even tho she passed 15 years ago). Anyways, my "fat leggings" from post pregnancy 10+ years ago, still fit! And I still wear them all the time! They were $20! It's not always about the price tag!

It used to mean something, now it does not. Doc’s used to be totally worth the price because they came with comfort, quality and would last years and if they did rip they would repair or replace. Now they are still expensive and garbage that last a year or two (if you are lucky) and no guarantee. (And have been outsourced and no longer made in London).

For most items in my wardrobe, I'm not concerned with the brand but definitely with the material. And I try to find what I like best and the companies that fit me the best. However, certain pieces that I need to be of the highest quality I get custom-made. Buying suits and certain pieces this way means not only am I picking the material, but it fits me precisely. And I'm okay spending the money on that because it's about craftsmanship and not about branding.

There's textile manufacturing & textile finishing. Made in "wherever" doesn't matter if the finished product is produced from a low quality raw textile fabric. Branding & marketing is everything.

This is why home economics needs to make a comeback. I sew and I can see horrible quality a mile away, especially plaid garments. It sad to see how many people are walking out in so call expensive clothes that looks like a toddler made it.

Its also because of the demand. People nowadays want clothes to post on social media and they dont care for longlasting but just something stylish thus the quality

Disregarding price and quality, we buy too much clothes anyway. I recently donated about 70% of my wardrobe because I simply never wore most of the stuff I bought. Let's un-brainwash ourselves from mass clothing consumerism.
