I have few cards from my parents, family members and kids from when they were little. They're a nice piece of nostalgia and make me feel good to look at them every once in awhile. But I agree, you don't need to keep every card your friends, neighbours and distant cousins has given you over the years.

My public library takes old books, CDs, and DVDs year round and resells them at a once a year event to supplement their funding. It's a great way to declutter and support a worthy cause at the same time.

I have two large decorative storage boxes- one for myself and one for my son. Any sentimental cards, trinkets and mementos we want to keep are stored in these. I review and cull every few years. It’s been helpful to contain these items, which can grow out of control.

Any new cords that come into the house get the label-maker treatment. That way I know what the dang cord is for. Once the appliance, electronic is replaced, out goes the cord. It's not a perfect system but it works. I also moved multiple times within just a few years. We decluttered more and more with each move. Thanks Nick. Have a great weekend.

Labeling cables make my life less stressful. All my desktop computer and peripheral cords are labeled. When something goes wrong, the last thing I want to do is figure out which cable is which. Tangled cables are stressful too. I got some small zip lock bags from Amazon -about 3” x 4”- to store cables tangle-free. Labeled, of course.

Nick, I was shaking my head when you were talking about getting a more colorful couch (sofa). How is that possible when so many retailers offer only 3 or 4 color options and they're all neutrals?!? I've lost count of how many times I've seen a nice couch online and it only comes in off white, putty, gray, and tan. And fewer and fewer retailers offer custom fabric options.

I am a visual and work at a big furniture retailer, and yes, the store can seem like a sea of greys with shadows of other earth tones. But you might want to ask the salesperson if you can speak with the visual that works there. We know what is available and the color choices. Salespeople really only know what is on the sales floor. Also most stores are too small to show every sofa that the company offers. Shop around, and good luck!

I am a retired interior designer. I had my sofa custom made for me in 1998, after working on a large resort. The upholsterer received a lot of work and so I purchased my sofa at cost. I chose a medium rust velvet upholstery and I still absolutely adore it. I DO change out my toss cushions on a seasonal basis. My sister was an artist with thread and needle. I have a beautiful cross stitch pillow with a design by Charles Rennie McIntosh (we had visited Scotland) and I have an embroidered Chinese dragon pillow (I was born in the Year of the Dragon). They have so much meaning for me!

Your commentary is hilarious & on-point. I'm guilty of almost all of these issues & working on dealing with them. One point in particular- opting for soft squishy feather & down pillows. The feel & upscale look is so much nicer & more relaxed than stiff boxy looking poly-fill. But, make sure the feathers are encased in a separate sturdy fabric liner & not just stuffed into the decorative removable/zippered pillow fabric itself. Otherwise the feathers will find their way out & the quills will poke you, ouch...

And recipe books! Sure some are beautiful, but realistically, we try at most a couple dishes from them, and then they gather dust. Keep only the ones that you use constantly, scan a few of the recipes in the other ones that you might make, and let the physical copies go.

About physical media - I kept them for DECADES but never watched or listen again! I finally purged them all, not making decisions about each individual one to relieve anxiety. I did so when I realized that it was not my responsibility to be the Library of Congress, that I was not an archivist or historian, and could no longer ignore the time, money, space, and guilt of keeping them. And now that I’m older, realizing that I haven’t ever consumed them since, and won’t go back to them until ever again. And if I want to watch something, I will rent or stream it, and if it is no longer available I will lament corporate greed, stupidity, and lack of care for their own products, then watch something else. And my family didn’t want them either, especially as an inheritance. But books - Kept a lot, but purged textbooks, and gave book series to several people who would enjoy them as I would not read them again. Can’t take that final step. 📚😼

Hello Nick, card shop owner here, from Scotland. It is considered bad manners here to give someone a gift without card, you just wouldn't do that. And as for cards, yes , lots of them are quite generic but there are also some that have some fantastic art/ photography/cartoons on them. They are a gift in it self, a thought. You would be amazed how much deal it is fro people to find the right card for that specific person to receive it. And after all you may want to display them for a few days and then move on.

In Germany it is the opposite. If you are able to personally deliver a greeting and/or present, there is no need for a card. Cards are for sending greetings if you are unable to be there in person.

Another thing with physical media: with a lot of classics and popular movies or books, you can get them from your local library. Knowing that helped me get rid of a lot of books and movies that I didn't need, but was holding onto just in case I wanted to revisit them. Also, libraries will take donations of books, dvds, and puzzles, so they can help with the purging as well.

I feel called out over the old remotes & cables (that are likely obsolete). The board game related incidents you mentioned made me think of when my dad told me about a particularly drawn out game of Risk that resulted in my uncle (a rather quiet account) flipping the table, storming out of the room, & refusing to speak to my Dad for a week 😂😂😂😂

If you don't want to let go of your CDs and DVDs, just get one of those albums that you can put the disk in. Keep the paper insert and the disk and throw out the plastic case. You can keep a hundred disks in a 3" binder which zips up and looks neat.

Hi Nick, we recently retired and being a secretary for 40 years, I was always cleaning up the office, organizing, etc., and I felt like I had to do something at home. So the first thing I tackled was my closet, then the kitchen, and the tv unit. I had a whole drawer of cables and my husband and I went through them and kept 2!!! We had stuff in there that we totally forgot about because we stored it out of sight (like you recommend)! Anyway I have finished purging and now I can enjoy my retirement. 😎🇨🇦

I used to save Readers Digest Runner’s World Subset Better Home and Garden Shape. When I decided to purge, I almost broke my back. They broke paper bags reusable bags and cardboard boxes due to weight. I could only carry a small batch at a time from home to car and from car to recycle dumpster. I never save any magazine since.

Tbh, I wish interior designers gave more consideration to books/bookshelves as essential/functional items that *can* be styled, but whose primary function is *not* decoration. Like a sofa/couch in a living room, or a kitchen table in a kitchen is essential/functional. Like good lighting is essential/functional. A home (of a normal, sane human), should have bookshelf with books and/or a reading nook. *How* to style it, absolutely worth talking about. But *whether to have it* should not be a point of discussion. And when designing living room (or other leisure room) ideas, layouts, etc., do not leave out a bookshelf.

I am very guilty of holding on to those free vases. I cleared them out last year and have not missed them. I’ve picked up a few I really love from thrift stores over the years, a couple I saved from my mother with sentimental value, and a couple of larger IKEA vases - all I need and the ones that aren’t used every day take up very little storage space.

I have 2 white lounges in my living room...great...I also have a black longhair constantly shedding cat...great... Monopoly, yes. My late husband and I came across it in a cupboard and decided to have a game...just for a laugh. It turned ugly , very quickly mostly due to my competitive streak. I ended up throwing the board in his direction, it missed him...so I hit him with it. end result ...was me crying, he making a cup of tea and us throwing out the demonic game.

I used to joke that my Mom would send me a card for Arbor Day because she never missed an occasion to send me a card. I saved all of them along with family photos in a mid-century Lane chest under my tv.
