My act of helping my daughter as a very young child to write a letter to Mr. Rogers on her birthday turned into a yearly pen pal birthday letter exchange to not only my daughter but to me as well. As you might guess my knee jerk pessimistic reaction to those first letters was how nice to have Mr. Rogers’ administrative assistant send us one of their letters. If anyone reads one of his letters though, it quickly hits you that only he could have actually written these letters. His letters displayed the compassion and insight he displayed on his show. My daughter & I exchanged these yearly birthday letters with Mr. Rogers right up to his death. We will always remember our genuine dear friend.

I was born in 1972, so I loved his show. He was a constant for me. You gave your daughter, and yourself, an amazing gift. And I can only imagine those letters brought him comfort, that he was doing the right thing. I imagine the letters are private, but I admit to being curious about them. When I was in grad school, under a great deal of stress, sometimes I would come home and turn on Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood. Somehow, even thought he was on tV and no doubt prerecorded years before, he knew just what to say to make my day better and make me know that I would get through it. At times, it was uncanny. One time it was stormy and I was soaked to the bone from making a long trek to the campus parking lot. Mr. Rogers said, “It’s a beautiful day.” And i said, “Well, not today, Fred.” And he said, “Some days are good on the outside and somedays are good on the inside.” I said, “Good point....Are you actually listening to me, Fred?”

Mary Ann C I was still preschool age when Mr Rogers’ Neighborhood made its national debut, and watched regularly until I “outgrew” him for “more mature” fare such as Giligan’s Island reruns 😆 About 8 years later, I was at that awkward tween age and had just moved to a new home and school district. I had always been a bit of the odd duck, and was never a member of “the popular” crowd. I too, would come home from a stressful day at school and found comfort in watching that afternoon’s broadcast (though I now see those were hiatus years) of MRN. He was so sincere when he spoke directly to the camera and said “I love you just the way you are” 🥰

I also discovered Mr Rogers when I was in grad school (I was an international student). During the hard times, I just watched the clips of his interviews or him talking and instantly cried. Whenever he said I like you just the way you are, I bursted into tears, good tears. Needless to say, he has something to do with me being able to overcome those tough times.

One thing about Mr. Rogers that I never noticed until I was an adult was, he was talking to me and he introduced his neighbors to me. Not to all his friends watching the show but just me. He always spoke to the camera in the singular. Like I was the only kid watching, I was the only kid with him.

Ashamed to say now, but I felt the same as Hanks did about the show. Even tho I’m a slow-paced southerner, watching Mr. Rogers was agonizingly slow torture for me... until one day I noticed my 3-yr-old niece, whose parents were in the mist of an ugly divorce, hanging onto every word he said. She was the most quite, yet the most standup child. If she saw someone mistreating someone, be it a cartoon, a doll or another person, she’d calmly intervene.

When Mister Rogers was on PBS, I was a self-involved high school teen. One afternoon, I turned in KHET and found Fred Rogers contending with a dead Guppy on the bottom of an aquarium. Rather than scoop it up roughly and toss it into the toilet and flush it away, he gently retrieved the fish and checked to see if it really was dead by putting it into a light salt water bath. Satisfied that it was "swiming in heaven," he took the defunct fish outside and gave it the kind of a burial reserved for a cherished pet, like a dog or cat. That is what made Mr. Rogers a "top of the world" TV host and a friend to children...of any age.

I have avoided watching this movie since I heard it was going to happen because I felt Fred Rogers was not to be touched by Hollywood. I've relaxed on that and after seeing this interview I'm ready to watch it. Before not even Tom Hanks was worthy but he did the work and the research and I'm sure I'm going to love it. I remember watching Mr. Rogers when my daughter was sitting in her little chair to listen to what Mr. Rogers and his Neighborhood was on and I can see she really paid attention and I actually cried through some of the talks he had with the audience which he made one think about certain subjects. I grew up in Pittsburgh and watched Mr Rogers every day. I then hung around for Sesame Street afterwards, but considered it a secondary show to Mr Rogers. I can’t wait to watch! This inspires me to be kind again (adulting has had a way of making me forget). The interesting fact is, it takes the same amount of energy to be kind and open versus closed off and angry. But when you chose to be kind, it’s so much more rewarding. And ultimately what God wants. Tom Hanks has always been my fave, and I don’t think anyone would have done a better job with representing Mr. Rogers 👏🥰

I watched mr.Rogers as a child,and I don’t remember much,but as a parent I saw him a different way,it’s a tool for all parents and kids,it shows parents that it’s good to talk to kids on their level,we all can be a little blue,or angry or happy,and it’s ok to talk abt things,he also teaches everyone that each person is beautiful,I find it hard to believe that some one could be so nice,toms performance was incredible,I rank this movie next to Gump,excellent work,and the movie for those that viewed it ,I’m sure has opened their eyes,to be kind,

I can't remember which interview it was about Mr Rogers but I think it was an interview with Mrs Rogers. I think she said that her husband Mr Rogers watched Forrest Gump. He loved it so much he watched it many times. The irony.😀

I love Fred Rogers. He was a gift to life, living, and emotional health. I love Tom Hanks. His acting, his person, his life. Hands down to Savannah Guthrie!!!!! She killed this interview!!! Not only, did she have actual questions with honest responses to what was said, she was involved, invested, and truly intrigued in what Tom had to say about the great Mr. Rogers. She had her own perspective, but rather than let that interfere with her responsibility, let that feed the curiosity, reverence, and respect that makes a good interview. Well done, Savannah Guthrie!

Mr. Rogers also never tried to use his show to sell children things. He said that it betrayed their trust. What a wise, wise man. Remember too when he first became popular men were not in caregiver roles. What a beautiful example. I grew up with Mr. Rogers and I cannot explain what he still means to me. He evoked such a warm feeling inside me of love. When I view his videos he still does. I hope he knew what a difference he made.

Mr. Rogers was so important to me as a child. My first-grade teacher told us to go home and watch his new program way back in 1968. He gave me hope that not everyone abused or dismissed children. Although I never reached his high level of goodness and maybe never will. A little bit of his message became part of who I want to be--to work hard day in and day out to make others feel loved and valued and to be good and kind to everyone. I love the man. I also believe that his message was for children as well as adults. In my 50s, I sing his songs when I feel down.
