Being stateless is no joke, in Singapore, if you're not PR/Citizen nor having a legal permit to stay, you're considered ilegally overstay. Imagine waking up everyday knowing you don't have the legal status to work, study or buy a flat in the country you grew up because of some bureaucratic procedural fuckups. Some of these people were born and raised in Singapore but can't even qualify for subsidised education/healthcare. They're not illegal immigrant, they're here since day one like every other Singaporean. It's sad, the sequence of event that leads to their position is usually out of their control. I believe theres a need to amend laws with regards to treatment and integration of Singapore-born stateless individuals to allow them to lawfully call Singapore their home.

There should be an amnesty to recognise these people as Singaporean citizens.

Our own PAP govt is so unfair in many ways, and nothing have changed.. 1000 plus stateless citizens were born and bred in spore for decades, serve national service with blood and sweat but PAP govt still refuse to issue our very own born & bred, a pink IC. Foreign talent/expats who are not even born here and stay in spore for only a couple of years, never even serve NS but with lots of money and good educational background, PAP govt open full doors, lay a red carpet, and give these foreigners a pink IC citizenship. PAP, why?? Why people still vote for you? Reason: its all about the money...

Even though this woman's son is not entitled to the same benefits as Singapore citizens, the Singapore govt and Singapore people expect this young boy to serve NS, because he has a PR. She doesn't pay a lower rate of GST or income tax, so why should she not get the same entitlements?

very sad to see those born here but are not sporeans.. very irritating that the gov are not helping them but giving to others who are just so undeserve so easily. idiotic gov officials pls do your job and ensure help are given to these stateless singaporeans..

They are a segment of people not being represented by anybody. Nobody is representing them to voice out. Glad that the media is helping them to, at the very least, make their voice heard.

If you were born in Spore after it's independent you will be a citizen, that is either parent even permanent resident their child born in Spore is a citizen. But during the separation of Singapore with Malaysia, you need to register yourself or your parents to opt for which citizen you would like to be, if you do not register to be a Singaporean you become a PR, her father is a Singaporean before or after Singapore gain independent makes a lot of dif. She mention she was born in Singapore, but if she does not have a birth cert or her mother misplaced it and the Spore govt cannot trace her records then she is stateless, but at least PR. If you got a birth cert even if Spore govt don't have records, she is automatic citizens.

My mum’s family came to Singapore after independence and the entire family has since been converted into Singaporean citizenship without exception. I believe that there is always a reason that they are stateless. The devil is in the details. I read some that have foreigner mums and dad that didn’t want to convert to Singaporean as dad didn’t want to conscript to NS and the child becomes stateless since neither parent is Singaporean. It’s not like we didn’t offer, but somehow somewhere there’s people who rejected citizenship and their kids suffer. Nowadays it’s getting even harder to be a Singaporean. I knew of 2 guy friends who didn’t want to convert as they don’t want to serve NS. So don’t just assume Singapore government didn’t want to convert them but they could be trying to game our system and later regret the decision and tell us they have been here their entire life but Singapore still don’t want to convert them.

I think no matter the parents decisions, children should be protected to avoid this fate. They don't choose to come to this world, they are not responsible for their parents. Internetional law should give them access to nationality, education and health system. Unfortunately, as this cases are very complicated from the legal perspective, nothing can be done to them. The system is a complete failure, almost everywhere in the world.

2024 and there's recent video/article of sg stateless people and I think SG has quota on PR/citizenship for stateless people. 25 y.o stateless guy born in sg at a hospital here, dad was sgean, mum was stateless. But he was given away to adoptive sgean parents. Stateless biological mum who was incarcerated eventually managed to get PR, but the son (assuming he has no bad record) remains stateless and never got to go to school here. Another 73 y.o man came to sg from Indonesia with his family when he was a kid, lived in sg for 65 years. His family registered their identities and eventually became sgeans except for him in case they need to return to Indonesia one day. That is how he remained stateless until today.

I was the same too. I was borned in SG with authentic Birth Certificate and NRIC number yet I was distinguish as citizenship UNKNOWN! Mother is Msian and father Singaporean unfortunately both aren't married at the eyes of Singapore law so end up this status was what been thrown to me and my brother. So sad we cant get to enjoy what other kids were enjoying and I was even gotten rejected multiple times when I was applying for SAF career from Air Force Navy and most vocations within the Army formation. After NS I was then only presented with the citizenship.

I feel sad for her son. Why does she decide to have a baby without getting married? she knows the feeling of statelessness, but she still chooses that fate for her son.

When governement can do their job to protect their people, good lawyers and samaritans need to raise this issue on behalf of these peope.. or these stateless peope should united altogether and form socitey to raise awarness and change the law.... you have right to ask for justice!

Documentary never cover what condition cause the stateless. If one parent is SG the default if you had filed paperwork with the govt should be able to get citizenship since citizenship status of the parents is the most important factor

The lady with a child, is his father a citizen? If he is the child would be a citizen at birth but she should have married the father. I sympathise with her but she has put her son in a similar situation now. If she herself was born in Singapore to a Singaporean father, why isnt she a citizen? Is her father listed on her birth cert or was her mum a single mother too?
