Todd is Really Mad at Dad And I Don't Know Why

Yesterday Todd asked for his Jingle Ball Bird Toy but didn’t play with it. I thought he looked upset. He then asked for Belly Rubs but hardly let me do it before wanting down. He told me he was mad and I can see he is upset about something but I have no idea why.
Todd is a 6-year-old neutered male cat at the time of this video. Todd and his dad have been learning to communicate with each other since May of 2022 with the help of recordable buttons. We aim to let Todd express himself and tell me his wants and needs. Currently, Todd has 51 words on his soundboard. This channel is dedicated to Todd learning to “talk”. I have the same scenario I have 3 cats. I rescued a mama cat when she was 9 months old and pregnant. When I was homeless, I took her in, I helped her have her babies and I kept 2 of her babies and her and you know, they're only 9 months apart from the mom, so they all want my attention, they all want to be the only child and a lot of The Times they're just not happy with each other and I try so hard. To make it, you know, fun for all of them for them to get along, but it just doesn't quite work out the way that I would like it to one I live in a small apartment so if I had a house with multiple rooms and levels, maybe it would be better, but I can only afford an apartment so it's difficult but I love my babies so much.

When the requesting cat (who has done the hard work of requesting) doesn't get the first offer, they get upset. They don't mind sharing, but they like to go first. Using my own cat-dad experience, I look at their eyes first. From the beginning of the vid, it looks like Todd doesn't really acknowledge or even see Glamour coming. So it appeared as though he gets to his buttons, looks at you as he winds up a jingle bird request, and then Glamour coming in catches the corner of his eye. She might have interrupted his intent and attempt at solo playtime, and then was grumpy after XD. Not a lot you can do about a cranky kitty except maybe their favorite treat lol. Again, just a cat-dad guess.

Folks might be on to something, but I am going to offer up an alternative to keep the possibilities open. Todd might just be having an off day and Glamour may have upset him earlier ...remember she is a bit of a diva!😅It didn’t help that she was invited to play too - perhaps further putting salt into the wound & making him jealous). I noticed that he was sniffing Glamour’s Amazon box before commenting ‘Glamour’ and ‘Mad’...so maybe there is something going on between the two of them and he is projecting his mood on to everything.

Todd is spoiled (I quite honestly am a spoiler of children and animals). He has learned to "speak," tapped into his critical thinking ( he had survival critical reasoning), and wants what he wants. Poor Todd. Poor Dad. and maybe not enough buttons to describe a discomfort Todd is feeling. I wonder if he doesn’t feel well, but not enough to say Ouch. Couple of possibilities here. I think that Todd actually only wanted to play jingle ball. He waited expectantly after pressing jingle ball and immediately got up to run to Dad when Dad acknowledged jingle ball BEFORE he pressed bird toy. He looked excited. Maybe he did press bird toy accidentally in his eagerness to get ready for jingle ball as he kind of stopped when dad said 'jingle ball/bird toy yes'. I wonder if he was mad at himself then. And then yes, Dad offered the toy to Glamour first, which made things worse hence 'Glamour, mad'. I really think that he wanted to play jingle ball and it got all mixed up into something completely different. I think he wanted to run and probably play with Dad by himself. Maybe his 'Bye' was his way of saying 'oh man, forget it then, Il have some 'belly rubs' instead' but decided that he was still too frustrated. Oh and by the way, I think you are excellent with your cats. You give them a lot of individual attention and 'together' attention. They are lucky to have you as their Dad! I love watching Todd, he reminds me of a beautiful black and white fluffy boy we had when I was young. He was called Jordie and he was very gentle, sweet and loving like Todd is. These clips make me happy as I currently have no pets due to my living situation. Thank you for posting so regularly.

As other have already commented, it seems pretty clear he's mad because you offered the toy to Glamour first. Since this is Todd's toy, he's the one who has to tell you when you can let Glamour play with it. Just like children, it's the same psychology. Imagine taking the toy of a small child and offering it to someone else to play with, but without the previous consent from the child.

Todd uses all 4 feet to use buttons. When he first started I wasn't sure either but when Todd presses a wrong button, which is rare, he puts his ears back, gets mad and goes to the button he meant to push and stomps it. The other thing is all his back boof button presses are in context to what is going on or asking for. They are intentional

Well #1) It is Springtime. #2) Todd may have wanted Jingle Ball but, out of his new habit, pressed Bird Toy without thinking. He literally froze in place when Dad quickly responded about wanting JB/BT. We couldn’t see his whole head from that angle (nor his expression) but he really stopped dead in his tracks!! What if he was just wanting to play the usual chase with Jingle Ball and he didn’t feel like he could explain or correct the mistake. We’ve all been in such a situation. It’s harder when you are the child and the adult presses forward while you feel more frustrated. Then both parties are frustrated. Often, it takes a while to fully figure it out. 💜

That is a possibility but while Todd does not have an oops button you generally know if he has made a mistake (which is rare). He will put his ears back, scowl and then go and mash the button he meant to push.

Well I am no professional cat behavior psychologist, but I think the consensus opinion in the comments, about the toy and Glamour, makes as much sense as anything. Hopefully Todd forgives and forgets quickly.

My babies don't even like when I leave for several hours. I couldn't imagine if I had to work a job. I'm disabled and I'm home all day at night and there's no one here, but me, so if I were to have to leave them, I wouldn't even be able to, because there's no 1 to help me take care of him. So I'm always attached to them at home and that's fine. I love that very much but I just wished I knew somebody that was close to them too if I had to go somewhere if I had to go into the hospital or something someone could take care of him. It worries me a lot.

The reason Todd is mad: you ask Glamour if she too wanted to have a toy at the same time you were fetching his jingleball/birdtoy and he did not like that. He wants exclusive attention! He wants none of the 'accessories' to be invited to the party!

Always remember that "Mad" can also mean Frustrated. Todd was getting ready to play when glamour walked in. I think he changed his ask to try and impress her, but it wasn't working out. Then later he says Glamour Mad. We all know he love Glamour. I think he's frustrated because he's trying to impress the girl and get her attention,a nd she isn't interested.

I think that back foot press was maybe an accident this time. He got excited to play jingle ball, accidentally hit bird toy and you played with bird toy for Glamour. I think he wanted normal jingle ball.

I'm not sure if it is jealousy, maybe but then I'd think he'd be more into the belly rubs and having time with you. Perhaps he really did think you were leaving! Or I wonder if he wanted something he doesn't know how to ask for and felt confused and frustrated. It made me smile because as an autistic person this is a frequent experience for me with people (as well as cats of course!) - I can feel when something is off but find it very hard to tell what it is. Seeing you try so hard to understand Todd was really lovely!

Yes, I have seen that Russell is a bit of a clean freak. This helped me to understand my cat Missy and her behaviour about her kitty litter. She uses them to communicate her ire, banging them loudly (she has two - one for poos and the other for pee) to get my attention to clean them right away lol (or if she wants to go outside). I saw Todd paw the wrapper as if to say, "what is this in the way of my button ugh" 😅

I am probably wrong, but I have a different take on it. He may not be feeling well. It seems to me that if he were mad at you he wouldn't have asked for the belly rubs. But he did request it, and then seemed like he wasn't into it. Sometimes kids will want to play, even though they feel a little sick (like a stomach ache or something), and then when they try to get into playing, they can't. Maybe he meant "bye" to the upset stomach. He said "bye" and then "belly rubs." Maybe he was trying to say his stomach hurt and he wanted the feeling to go bye. Maybe he was "mad" that he couldn't enjoy himself. Todd usually doesn't show jealousy about Glamour, so that's why I question that explanation. Plus he loves dad so much. I don't think he could get mad at you, especially not because you tried to include Glamour, whom he also loves. ❤

Possibly but I don't think so. When Todd makes a mistake he gets mad and goes back and stomps the mutton he meant. I agree with most. He asked for a toy, I said yes then offered it to Glamour before him. After that he said Glamour Mad and was pouty

The jingle ball bird toy is Todd's special invention. He asked to play with it. You offered it to Glamer. Todd did NOT like that. The "bye" was for glamer. He didn't want her to play with his toy. He was mad at both of you.
