Since you're talking Todd Rundgren, and you mentioned her, how about Laura Nyro? I love Wedding Bell Blues, and especially Morrissey's cover as a duet with Billie Joe Armstrong.

I first learned of Laurie Anderson when listening to an interviewer talking to David Bowie in 1979. I think the interview was called "David Bowie's retrospective of the 70s". Of course being a lonely farm boy with headphones and an FM radio I taped it and had it with me for years but sadly that tape case was stolen at some point. You may have already covered her and I missed it but Laurie Anderson was a big deal.

Todd is one of the true originals, what a talent! Honestly, has there been a bigger jack-of-all trades in popular music history? One of the greatest producers ever, what a sense of dynamics he has in his production (both his own music and that of other acts)....a multi-instrumentalist, who often played all the instruments (and well) himself on his records.....and a phenomenal vocalist with an incredible range and serious versatility as a singer. Todd's output in the first half of the 70s in particular (those first 5 or 6 solo albums and the first couple of Utopia albums) is simply legendary! Amazing how so many people haven't even heard of him, a well kept secret indeed, and one of my favorite musicians/producer ever, no doubt about it!

He didn't want to sound like someone else, and vowed to do something completely different, and so right after Something/Anything, he did just that. Cheers.

I was so delighted to get notice on my laptop that this episode was available! Thanks so much for focusing on "I Saw The Light" over "Hello It's Me." I was drawn to Todd's music before I even knew his name, back in the '70s. He has been a huge influence on my musical style(s). When I first heard "Breathless," the top of my head near blew off (I was 17 at the time of first hearing). Todd's ability to navigate Pop, through soulful R&B, to unabashed whimsy has captivated me over and over again. For me, his follow-up album, "A Wizard, A True Star?" was a delightful departure from the previous teenage bubble gum sensibility. Over the years, Todd's music has been an inspiration, as well as a music form of "comfort food." Thanks Warren, for covering one of my top musical heroes!

"I Saw The Light" is virtually a primer on pop songwriting. The rhyme scheme is: A-A-A, B-B, C-C-C, B-B, D-D. I challenge anyone to try following this example to appreciate the challenge. The lyrical turnaround in the final chorus where he takes the "saw the light" theme and turns it around on himself is brilliant. On top of all that the song manages to be sweet and sentimental without being cliche or syrupy. This lyric is the equal of the songs of the best pop stylists of the rock era.

"Something/Anything" is hands down an amazing elpee. By far my favorite songs are Couldn't I Just Tell You?, Dust In The Wind, and surprisingly, Piss Aaron. I was fortunate to see Todd in concert six times during the early 70s including a summer performance in Central Park. During that concert, Todd distributed postcards with the instructions that if you returned the card with name included, your name would appear on his follow-up elpee. Sure enough! Months later the poster in the "Todd" album includes my name -> my inconspicuously lone claim to musical fame. My Todd collection includes all his stuff from The Nazz through Utopia. I lost interest in Todd after issuance of Utopia. His dissonant synthesizer experiments failed to resonance with my evolving tastes which were moving towards the punk and later New Wave scenes. Laura Nyro grew up listening to her mother's record collection. Some of her influences were Debussy, opera, doo wop, Curtis Mayfield and Coltrane. In interviews, Donald Fagen has compared her chording to Stravinsky and Bartok. Nyro is seismically influential on songwriters. The recent mega hit Drivers Licence by Olivia Rodrigo is based on Nyro's You Don't Love Me When I Cry (1969), even the ding at the start of the song.

I recall from high school and loved it then and love it now, and my song is still It wouldn't have made any difference.

Great video, thanks Warren! As a teen I listened obsessively to Todd - especially A Wizard, A True Star, which was mindblowing - as well Laura Nyro. I didn't see the connection then but it makes sense. I also love his productions for Grand Funk, New York Dolls & XTC. A wizard, a true star indeed

I met Todd Rundgren when he was promoting his _A Cappella_ record through an acquaintance who was playing saxophone for the tour. Good album BTW. The first time I met him was at a bowling alley in Hollywood and after bowling with the band for a while, I asked, "is this what rock stars do for fun," and Todd said, "there is bowling alley in just about every town in the US."

Always love your videos. I learn something from you all the time. And now you’re done a bit on my all time fave. Although a great guitarist and rocker, I was originally drawn to Todd by his softer love songs. Gentle, melodic, soulful and always smart lyrics. The best song ever is PRETENDING TO CARE. I well up every time I hear it. His A CAPELLA album is up there with AJA as the best production ever. You could do an entire video on that album alone….or the 2ND WIND album

Not yet 18, I borrowed my college roommate’s ID to get into the Bayou in Georgetown (Wash DC) in 1978 when my buddy suggested we go see the Hello It’s Me guy (on his Back to the Bars tour where he was backed by Utopia for a double set night). Our precious little minds were S-O-O blown that we bought scalper tickets and went right back in to catch the late set. Been a major fan ever since!

His voice was absolutely sublime. He needs to be inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. I saw him play with Ringo too! In Bank of New Hampshire Pavillion!
