When you were checking to see if Todd's head was happy, his purr motor was in high gear. 😍 Yesterdays episode with the 'orb of sadness' had me laughing. Todd is a cat that knows exactly what he wants. Cracks me up, he has you creating new toys for him. That is because he is so smart, he soon gets bored of his old toys. Always loves his family though. What a loving fur baby.

Language is the key to communication. The more language you know the better you understand and are able to express your feelings, wants and needs. Just like humans. The more you talk to them the more they will understand. Not just English! You can teach ur pets other languages too!

It’s absolutely amazing he tells you several days in a row that his head is better and no longer an ouch. It does inspire me to add body parts on my word board for my cat, which I’ve not done. I don’t Think my cat has any medical issues though one never knows until they do. Billi certainly did exceptionally well with the body words and communication of pain to her parents. I think that made treating the cats’ medical issues a whole dimension Better & they’re good at hiding pain. We recently had the horrible cold-flu and were able to use “ouch cough” to explain it to our cats, one does use the talking buttons and I do think it helped explain our illness probably to them all. Also a good term for hair balls.

More like saving for more buttons, they’re not cheap. Kendra had several sets I think and what about Bunny has one each for two dogs as they’re not really sharing the board. My cat is a little protective about his board that might be why the other cats don’t use it. They all seem to understand the words I’ve modeled so I think more of my cats could speak through the word board!

​@deborahemielita5949 Yes, the buttons are not cheap. People keep telling me I need to get the Connect buttons that shows you on your phone what they have said. I would live to do that but what they don't understand that even keeping and resting all my mats to replace what Todd has currently would be right at 1000 dollars. I already went through that on e when they came out with the Speak Up buttons which are great but I can't afford to do this every time a new button is released.

They do not question it; they do a full exam to make sure there is nothing else going on. So far, we have been to the vet three times for two different cats on Todd's request, and he has been right every time.

I think he was reaching for the button just past it but didn't want to get up to reach it. He touched Glamour, but the button just past it was Todd/

This was the main reason I started the buttons. I hoped all the kitties would use them, but Todd is the only one who wants to. He has also shown that he will tell me when the other cats are hurting, too.

For the most part, at least for Todd, it is modeling. I started with words he already knew, so we didn’t have to try and teach him how to use a button and what a word means. I started with Todd, Play, and Bird Toy (his favorite toy at the time). I recommend showing your pet the button, pushing it, and doing what it says. So, I would push Bird Toy, say it, push it again, and then play the game with Todd. This is how I teach him his words. Todd is a special boy who understood what the buttons were for right away and started using them in 10 minutes. You can see this in the first video on the channel. This is not typical, and it is not uncommon for it to take a few months of working with your pet to get the first button pushed.

It was in stages. He first learned, "Ouch. " I had to wait until something happened, like when he got underfoot in the kitchen, and I stepped backward onto his tail. I picked him up and told him Dad was sorry he ouched Todd's tail. Later, he learned his main body parts generally by petting his head and saying, "This is Todd's head." Then, touching my head, this Dad's head. Once he knows the individual words/concepts he has shown over and over again, he can combine them to express himself. "Ouch Head"

Todd has been going to this vet since he was a kitten, and they have known him all along. The vet did not question it and did a complete check to ensure nothing else was going on, but Todd was right.

;Yes, given that cats tend to hide their illness or pain very well, you are way ahead of the rest of us cat people who have to guess and then feel guilty when we don't notice as soon as we wished we had. Of course all the talking cats with buttons are so well cared for that they will probably all have been spayed or neutered; but I wonder if these extra smartie pants would turn out genius cats if they could be bred together?? Is it genetic? Or luck of the cat who picked you?

A lot of it is the attention and care given to the individual. The same with children, the ones who are read to and taught how to do things are far more advanced than kids who are sat down in front of a TV to keep them quiet. Our pets are far smarter than they are given credit for, and cats especially. I think many of them try to communicate with us, but we don't understand, and they just give up and appear aloof. You are right about cats being stoic and not showing pain. Todd has a chronic condition, and he can become very sick very fast, and by the time he shows signs of it, he is pretty ill. I wanted him to be able to tell me as soon as he was feeling off.
