Holy crap. Todd is starting to become my favorite drummer. He's SO versatile! It's ridiculous. He can play anything from Jazz to Metal. He's got some good hands, too. I'm not one for drumming dvd's, but I feel like this one could end up being the first one I purchase for myself.

Cannot be understated how good your left hand has to be to play this pattern at that speed.

Really useful rhythm! I learned the same thing from Gary Chaffee back in the early 80s. He just approaches it from the snare and bass drum pattern and then you layer the 15 different cymbal ostinati on the ride hand and hi hat foot. Great to see Todd improvising freely and stretching out the pattern - very important to put it into context otherwise you just have "a lick". Great stuff!

Hi Esdras- This is a fusion groove I heard on a record in 1977. I'd like to clarify that this is not a brazilian groove, or a brazilian anything. I just mentioned that the bass drum pattern (so people could learn it) was that particular rhythm. I'm sure you're a talented player and would like to hear you sometime, but I'm afraid you took this out of context. Thanks. TS

Todd Sucherman Hey Todd. Something I've been doing with it. Example; The first basic way you're showing this, with the bar phrasing at the bottom of the screen, I like to do a paradiddle thing on the bell right before hitting that accent on the snare on beat 4. I hope I explained that correctly. So right before the snare hit on 4, I'm playing two bell hits, giving it a paradiddle feel. Again, I hope I explained it right.

Sorry for my brazillian friend here...Todd is not there to teach us baião, but to teach ghost notes in musical contexts. The pattern was a "Baião like" and is really right to say so. People just dont get it and always have to say bad things when they see a guy that master something. Learn from what he have to say, that are pretty much a lot of stuff, and the world will be a better place...

That might actually be a Pearl Reference kit cause the lugs are the same and the Masterworks lugs look very different. But I haven't seen that finish on a Reference kit before but I guess big artist could get whatever finish they want on whatever series. I could be wrong though.

Kind of crass and comments like yours Esdras are a bit on the envious side. Shame. Drummers are a 'brother/sisterhood' in many ways. - Gary
