So Harold tried to stop Lyn receiving CPR, refused to give his coat so his injured wife could be kept warm whilst awaiting the ambulance and kept changing his story of what happened - and no red flags were raised? Not even about the very large insurance payouts? If Lyn's death had been properly investigated Toni would still be alive.

CPR causes broken ribs, so he was being nice. As for the coat, haven’t you heard the phrase, “ you’re not dead, until you’re warm and dead.” He was trying to keep her alive by minimizing her body temperature until the people with equipment showed up. It all makes perfect sense if you look at it right.

How sad... I was a mail carrier for a child psychiatrist who was murdered by a home health aid he'd hired to care for his wife who had dementia or Parkinson's. The aid worker was stealing checks, and he caught her, the neighbors told me she hit him in the head and killed him. It was devastating. He was a lovely man.

It is so sad that the kindest, most honest people become targets for manipulative, heartless SOB's. We only have our own yardstick to judge someone else by. If a behaviour is unthinkable to you, you literally cannot think of your loved one behaving that way to you. The more honest person would tend to give them the benefit of the doubt for this reason. I am so sorry that you have lost your friend in this horrible way.

I went to High School with Toni- she was such a shining light. Brilliant, (her whole family are doctors- she was an eye doctor herself), kind and gentle, she just wanted to be loved and to become a mom. If it weren’t for the efforts of her brother, that monster might still be at large murdering whomever he victimized next. I remember at my last appointment with her, she was telling me how happy she was and that she was moving to Colorado. 💔. RIP Toni, you deserved so much more from life. Henthorn was such a master manipulator with both wives. However, it’s not so easy to identify manipulation in a long term relationship like a marriage, but I think you are right on target in regards to maintaining clear boundaries as a way to protect oneself. Unfortunately when people began noticing a pattern of manipulation, that’s usually after a long series of offenses. I tend to think that, at first, most people will give their partner the benefit of the doubt before assuming there is deceit at work. Great analysis again Dr. Grande, thank you!❤️
@aarondavis8943
@aarondavis8943 Жыл бұрын
I personally don't like this term: master manipulator. All he had to do was target the right personality in a partner and he could dominate them with very little skill required. Some people simply see the best in people and can't really imagine that the person they have loved for years would harm them. I think most of the pathological dynamic at work in these situations is in the mind of the victim, rather than the perpetrator. This makes your point about boundaries all the more critical in avoiding narcissists, and this is the good news. We can quite easily be empowered to be invulnerable to narcissist manipulation, but these simple skills need to be taught from an early age.

This reminds me of one of Agatha Christie’s short stories. Miss Marple tried to stop a wife killer but failed. She talked about how the wife didn’t believe her husband would hurt her after the husband’s failed attempt on her life by accident and Miss Marple tried to warn her. I thought it’s a little bit hard to believe. Now I see it’s from real life. Tony wasn’t alert after the beam nearly missed her.

@@anonymousstrangeness7348 I've seen a couple of true crime tv programs on Henthorn. Dr. Grande doesn't go into Henthorn's "career", which didn't exist. He lied about his work and he must have hid his finances, or lack thereof, from Toni. I don't know what he said or did about work and finances with his first wife. Anyway, I find it incomprehensible how Henthorn prevented Toni from finding out he had no career and, if he had any money in the bank, it was what remained from the insurance money from the death/murder of Lynn. Toni and he were married 12 years, and she never looked at their joint finances, tax returns, or retirement accounts? Or she decided to live in the Land of Denial? All I can ascribe it to is that she was brought up as a good, faithful Christian from the deep South, and that meant, even though she was a doctor, she had to stick to her role as a submissive, never questioning wife. Too many women still accept that role.

Thanks, but no thanks. Sometimes mystery is appealing and fosters an openness that gets closed with knowing more about one's teachers. When I say teachers, all of us are teachers at times and Dr. Grande is a teacher of sorts. Not knowing means someone may learn from a teacher in spite of the fact that their own belief systems may vary from the teacher's beliefs. Not knowing those aspects , imo, makes the learning environment more pure and makes one less susceptible to confirmation bias, amongst other biases. Nowadays, it's rare to not know everything about ppl and their belief camps. Frankly, I'm over it. Objectivity can include not knowing for sure, and that objectivity increases my joy in listening to him - because he does not wear his affiliations on his sleeve (aside from his unusual knowledge about firearms, which only tells me he might be a gun hobbyist and that's okay if he is). Overall, he seems to approach everything as fairly has he can without advertising his belief systems. I think we should all be more like that whenever we we can. At the end of the day, that's what humanism is really about at it's core - relating to each other, irrespective of the groups others may lump us into. If I advertised my beliefs ppl would make presumptions about me, and probably about half of those presumptions would be completely incorrect. I don't want to do that , even subconsciously, to Dr. Grande.

I went out with Harold who I met on a phone dating service. This was 2 years after the death of his 1st wife. He told me she died in a head on car crash. I had dinner at his home in Littleton Co. Lynn’s photos were everywhere. He kept a portable small toothbrush in his pocket, drank a case of Pepsi or more a day, knew info about my ex husband’s finances, asked me what would I do if his wife was still alive and living in UT, freaked if I didn’t pick up things he wanted. The final for me was when he drove up a mountain after our dinner, stopped the car & said…Just think…I could kill you & chop you up and no one would find you until spring. I was in shock. He laughed & said…just kidding. I researched to find death certificate of first wife & found coroner’s name. Called him…& everything changed. I called it off and he came pounding on my door middle of night. I called police and even had private investigators help me. He backed off but I found out the whole time he was dating many women at the same time. Then I saw years later he killed his 2nd wife. I have never dated since. Breaks my heart for Toni & her daughter.

If it doesn't have to be signed in front of the insurancing agent, then signature can be forged, or you can have someone pretend to be your spouse, if the document is required to be signed in front of a notary public. What needs to happen is that no one can take life insurance out for you, with the exception for minor children, and perhaps for someone who is mentally incapable of signing for themselves. Otherwise, it seems to me, that phrase life insurance needs changed to death assurance.

I think that he hit them both with something heavy first. I don’t believe that his first wife would have voluntarily climbed under the car. Then with Toni, he likely again went with what he knew and hit her first then threw her over the edge. I doubt she would have gone close enough to the edge after her surgeries to be pushed over. Both bodies would have had major trauma so it would be hard to tell the difference and then he had them cremated quickly. His narcissism made him think that he would get away with it and I think that the changing story of his wife’s death was a way to distance himself from what he knows he did.

For example, if someone lies about a small thing to make themselves look better or to evade responsibility for a mistake, I will assume that they'd do the same when there are higher stakes.

As a single, professional woman, I can't imagine not keeping track of my finances and those of my husband's, especially when running a household, planning for our retirement and caring for our child. Didn't Toni have to sign a joint tax return? Or did she only do her own? And didn't she wonder why they had to ask her parents for money when supposedly you and your husband are successful professionals (so I heard on another version of this tragedy)? Toni was a doctor, but her common sense seems to have gone out the window. If I were Toni, I'd wonder why he and I were never invited to any charity fund-raisers since her husband said his work was all about helping organizations raise funds through various functions. I would assume that those organizations would invite the guy responsible for putting those functions together, but since he wasn't working, at all, those functions didn't exist. All I can figure out is that she didn't want to admit any suspicions to herself and/or, as a faithful Christian, she'd stick it out, no matter what. Too bad sense and reality didn't overcome her faith.

These boundary violations happened to my daughter. Mike, was living in a horrible house and after checking his background, he appeared okay so we gave him the master bedroom with his own bathroom. He appeared nice, but not only did he never pay rent, but after he left because he didn't like rules, I found out he abused my daughter who was 27, but more like a 12 yo. He stole money from me and convinced me he had no money even though he worked and received SSI for reasons that make no sense. He even got a much better job making more $, but used my generosity to get more and more money from me for groceries, gas, dinners, bowling, and more. He was crafty and manipulative as well as physically and emotionally hurting her everyday. She hid it, but asked me after he left if she was a sinner! I knew something was wrong! Her women's group contacted police after her therapist told her she should just move on even though she is a mandatory reporter!! On Tuesday we have been called to the grand jury for testimony for this case. My daughter's emotional life has been destroyed. She is petrified to go, but determined to obtain justice!!
