Dom Trussardi What Biden does to women and children shows his power, not only over them but over the husbands and fathers they are with. It says volumes about the kind of person he is. He poses as a populist but when you pay attention to what he actually voted for and stands for, he sides with his biggest donors, not his constituents. He's oily and disingenuous in these photo ops as he feels, kisses and smells and almost seems to be enjoying their discomfort. If this is how he behaves when the cameras are rolling, what does he do when they're not?

Seriously appreciate this video. I know some of the comments are heading towards political stances, but for me, it's a great way to open the conversation about boundaries and personal space. You pointing out that it can be about power is spot on. There are bosses that do this (ugh, had one), and it can feel like you can't say anything when there's a power dynamic like that. I had one fellow employee who was touchey, and I had no problem being direct and saying "Hands off". A boss? That's trickier to navigate. No matter the intention, it communicates "I have the right to touch you", a right most people don't give to just anyone. It's pretty simple - just respect people.
@hannahtattoo5 жыл бұрын
@Caphale Coombs absolutely, unfortunately there are too many people who are not confident enough to communicate their boundaries. It's very important that parents, and more importantly, society as a whole, teach the importance of boundaries and respect. Young people, who may not have good people guiding them at home, can't be left to figure this out themselves.
@lunacouer5 жыл бұрын
@Caphale Coombs Please know, I'm not saying that those with looser physical boundaries are in the wrong, or should be invalidated for being more hands-on with other people. My initial point was that in relationships that have an uneven power dynamic, it's especially important to be mindful of where you put your hands. I think it's good to bring that mindfulness to all interactions, too. I mean, I'm a hugger. But, I also know not everyone is. I especially know that for some, unwanted physical contact is triggering of past trauma. So, I ask people I don't know. For example, I met these two ladies for coffee once (we'd met online through a similar interest). When I met them, I said "I'm a hugger. Are you a hugger?" One said yes, the other said no. I said "Totally get it", then hugged one, and very warmly said hi to the other. If I had just gone in to hug both, and the woman who wasn't ok with that had to back up and put her hand out to stop me, or, like y'all were talking about, didn't feel like she could set a boundary, how awkward and uncomfortable would our first meeting have been? It's just easier, in order to avoid putting someone in a defensive stance, to ask first. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being more open or more closed when it comes to personal space. We're all on a spectrum. I also think it's more polite and respectful for the more touchy among us to ask permission first.
@hannahtattoo5 жыл бұрын
People usually have reasons for being more reserved and feeling uncomfortable when it comes to people invading their personal space. Even if it is simply a lack of confidence, by asking rather than waiting, it forces them to have to publically express they are uncomfortable and awkward... It's openly declaring you are super confident whilst highlighting to everyone else that they are not. Ultimately, I agree it is better to ask than steam in. I don't think you are wrong for doing that. However, waiting to get to know someone is a perhaps a less aggressive way to introduce yourself.

It doesn't matter who violates your personal boundaries. If it's your boss you must act the same way as with anyone else. Nobody has the right to cross your boundaries. Meghan Markle regularly broke into peoples boundaries. I think it’s a form of establishing control over the other person. Saying “oh I’m just a hugger” just minimalises the feelings of the person who doesn’t like her doing that, and she then gets the control anyway by making that person feel bad. Markle also claws at Harry frequently and he seems very uncomfortable with it. Can you study that situation?

I once knew a college professor who was very "touchy-feely." He touched everybody equally-both males and females. But most of his students,including me, never felt like he was being creepy or predatory. Let me explain, this man was like a friendly Dad type- he would often pat students on the shoulders or give their arm a squeeze whenever he was praising or encouraging them. When one of his students did finally admit that they were uncomfortable with all the touchy-feely behavior, he stopped. The student said the professor seemed extremely shocked and was very apologetic. He insisted that his pats on the back were never intended to offend the student or make him uncomfortable. He also later explained that he came from a big family of huggers, everyone was super affectionate and it was simply, in his mind, almost a form of expression. I think in his case, his touchy-feely (ness) was a learned behavior. He never was taught or told by the people in his immediate family to respect certain boundaries. He wasn't a bad guy...in fact he was one of my favorite professors and he never gave off a creepy vibe. His touches were always non-sexual and brief and just a way of saying "good job!" But yes I do understand how some people could see it as crossing a line, especially in a teacher-student dynamic.

Genuinely friendly people do not use touch in order to dominate, and there has never been an entire generation of American men for whom repeatedly touching women and children (who are not their own wives and children ) was acceptable, so "he's from another time" is a weak and insulting excuse. In the C-span videos of Biden, it is obvious that his targets are very uncomfortable, but when they act nervous and make moves to withdraw, Biden continues the creepy behavior. Almost all my Hispanic clients (women & children ) will feel more comforted with a touch of the hand or lean in for a hug. Etc. The more power a person has, the less they pay attention to others. Being a warm and outgoing person, Biden has probably always been oriented to interact physically with others, and as he gained power, people were increasingly less likely to tell him to keep his hands to himself. @aliz.53054 жыл бұрын
In my experience, it's been older men who do things like touch when having a conversation (such as my shoulders and arms) and sometimes even smell my hair when they go in for a hug. It has happened a handful of times throughout my life and each time it was a much older male. I never felt violated but more so startled by it. Rather than feel like they crossed a line, it feels more like my personal space isn't being respected. There's been 2 times when a much older man baby talked but what they said wasn't sexual. For example, I told my old boss that I was having stomach pains and he said, "Does she have tummy pwang?" It was weird but that was the only weird thing he ever said or did. I agree that some people just need to be more aware of personal boundaries and how they make others feel. The thing is, when women touch me, call me sweetheart, honey or baby, caress my hair, it feels good to me because I interpret it as the woman being maternal. I sometimes wonder if the men who do this feel that same sense of father-like affection for younger women because again, when they've done these things, it's never progressed into more extreme behaviors/sexual assault or harassment. Can some or even all men feel affectionate for younger women and men without it being sexual the way women can for younger women and men? I think so but that doesn't excuse making others feel discomfort.
@desilanni2 Жыл бұрын

It's so odd how trauma affects everyone differently... when I was 19 I was in Iraq and a NCO very senior to me and probably in his late 40s grabbed me from behind on my left thigh to the point where he almost touch my balls. when I was in my mid 20s I was raped by my girlfriend.(I know everyone thinks that's ridiculous, but I legit was very angry and did not want any kind of sexual contact with her at that point, where I was trying to throw my hips over so she didnt have access. People think because I am a man, I cant be raped. But because I had the physiological response to a female touching me did not mean I wanted it or consented. I couldn't fight her off without getting violent with her. I've heard that many women who are raped have a positive physical response to sex during the rape... just because a women is wet or a man is hard does not equal consent... but with all that being said. Those would be two incidents on par with yours, and I dont feel traumatized by either, and may think of one or both maybe 1nce a year... and not with pain and horror. This isn't me saying that u should get over it or anything like that, but I had experiences that could have been very traumatic depending on how I dealt with them. I don't think counselors should have a huggy relationship with clients - too risky for the counselor because open to misinterpretation, too risky for clients who may be vulnerable, fragile or unstable, and who need to trust the integrity of the person attempting to assist them towards greater happiness, better mental health and a sense of wholeness.
@nicoleowens23184 жыл бұрын
Yeah..I like my therapist a lot but I don't think hugging is professional at all, I do like hugging but that's a boundary that I don't think should be crossed. Maybe if you have been seeing them for like, 15 years and become more like friends, and you're the same sex and really comfortable with each other.. Otherwise..yeah..agreed

I would really love to see an updated video that includes your analysis of Joe Since that time, as well as how compelling you find Tara Reade's account. In the interview I heard, she seems compelling to me, and in the light of Biden's apparent lack of comprehension of what consensual contact looks like... it does not seem far fetched. There are a lot of attacks on the character of both parties, and I think you have insight that would rise above the typical low brow critiques.

What concerns me is how handsy he can be with children. Adults can make whether they consent or not pretty clear, while children get more of the narrative that you follow the adults lead. Consent is not as obvious with children. When I met Joe Biden, years ago, he gave me a hug that I reciprocated and it didn't feel creepy. It was definitely a friendly matter and he gave the same hug to men. It seemed more like a kind "I'm just a normal person like you." It would've been interesting to see how his hugs were viewed by the people watching in that situation. The Obama method of high fiving kids and returning the hug if kids run up to hug him is WAY more appropriate for kids.

These contacts he has are usually with little girls (and he whispers to them) and by the looks on their faces, they don't like it and seem uncomfortable.
@buckroo84243 жыл бұрын
First: Joe Biden has been in public office for 58 years as I recall. Second: It’s a matter of CONSENT! I don’t see him asking for that. He is a political figure , but that’s no excuse.I definitely don’t touch other people and their children. Biden is hopefully more mature and I hope smart enough to ask permission from the adult if it’s okay and even then it’s a strange request! If that sounds strange then touching or caressing especially a child shouldn’t be done. Third he can go to the White House each night and touch his wife. I doubt he even touches his son Hunter. Lastly, by his (Biden’s) own behavior he scares me as the most powerful person in the world. He definitely is showing signs of unwanted behavior i.e., clarity, responsibility, and lacks moral conviction; and he seems to be okay with that.

Dr. Grande, I may have posted this before. I sought counseling and the therapist crossed many boundaries. I was instrumental in having his license revoked. When I was working to start my life over, I thought about the concept of boundaries. (Thank you Pia Melody of Tuscon). I decided to change my last name after my divorce from Gupta. I opened a Thesaurus and looked up the word for "boundaries." The word "meridian" popped up. I liked it. So I changed my last name to "Meridien." I liked the French flair with the letter "e." I have been Anne Meridien since 1990. I had boundaries, that is why I did not succumb to this sexually abusive therapist. He messed me up emotionally, but I regained my self-esteem by changing my last name. Boundaries: sexual, physical, emotional, spiritual, mental. I am so grateful for what I learned from Pia Melody. Thank you for your wisdom and clarity!

It's not overly-affection; it's all about dominance in my opinion. Testing the men in these women's life (fathers and husbands) to do something about it. It's called power touching but some of it is sexual, very sensual. Creepy as creepy can get. It's disrespecting that they don't want it and saying I am powerful and I can have my way with you; your husband/father lets me. It's showing how far he can get. Brazen at violating people's boundaries and has been getting away for so long. About his "apology": There is NOTHING new under the Sun; it's not that things have changed or that it's generational or that it's because of the metoo or selfies or anything of that STUPID EXCUSE he makes. Women (and children) have ALWAYS been uncomfortable with a CREEP touching them the way he touches them. He minimizes by saying that social norms are changing (well, women and children are becoming more assertive than in the past), it is as bad as his behavior. He apologized but he still didn't SEE that there was something WRONG with what he has been doing.

I think hugging feels great when someone is giving love, sympathy, compassion etc. The creepy kind of touching is when that person is TAKING something. Dominating, getting off in some way. Healthy people can sense the difference.

I agree with Dr. Grande, however, that it's better to ask first before making that kind of physical contact with someone. As I had stated in a comment I posted, I've been an Orthodox Jew since I was 18, and we believe that type of physical contact should be reserved for close family members and spouses. Hugging is very intimate and it's getting very close to the other person. In the case of Joe Biden, he is a certain type of person: he doesn't care about boundaries and he doesn't care if people are uncomfortable. Telling him not to do that probably wouldn't work. He's not normal and should not be in public office.

You are so knowledgable and pleasant to listen to, Dr Grande. We do learn a lot with your videos. I like how they are constructed: always the same: disclaimer, than quick summary of the facts we need to know to analyze the situation, then the analysis. It is short and to the point. I also like your tongue in cheek humour at times.
@tuck-brainwks-eutent-hidva10985 жыл бұрын
Interesting to note that just as physical contact communicates something, so does the intensity of insistence on personal space. Different people, situations, roles have different specific parameters, but whole cultures or subcultures are governed by touch and space expectations that can be perceived to supersede personal prerogative -- the Mediterranean vs. Scandinavia; physicists and hippies. ["Big Bang Theory" wisdom: Penny -- "Sheldon, why don't you just try telling her how you feel?" Sheldon -- "Penny, I'm a physicist, NOT a hippie!" Physical space has an analog in emotional boundaries!] When cultural boundaries around touch (or "sharing" 😏) change over time, confusion can result. A friend and I were discussing the touch aspect of this phenomenon last night in relation to Joe Biden. It seems that a behavior that might have been, in his youth, "slightly off-center" of the bell curve jumped to "pretty wacky" a couple of decades ago (post-Clinton), and has leapt to "entirely unacceptable" in the last year (post-MeToo). Rough gig for an already boundary-challenged aging glad-hander. I'm stuck between "Eww..." & "Aww..." 😂

There are so many abusers out in the world who are never caught (To Catch a Predator), so with as many people in politics, there's got to be a % of them who are sexual abusers that go undiscovered.
