I tried this rotation on a .paved trail today. Wow! Five miles without fatigue, no sore feet because I wasn't slamming them down with every step. I found that the swing of my arms controlled the length of my stride, which was smaller than usual but I saw those quarter mile markers flying by! It was fun rotating down the trail, so easy!!

Thank you for this information. I really appreciate that you explain in detail with no hurry in your voice. I will certainly pay attention to this on my walk. Mix this with the knowledge you gave me about keeping my head up and let the eyes move ...what a change that made in my walk. Felt it right away !!! Thank you.

Such an excellent explanation of gait. It's popular to describe walking as "controlled falling" which is what a lot of people do. But I prefer Gracovetsky's description of walking as propulsion forward with "the spinal engine". This is more like a wound spring that the twist of the pelvis in one direction and the oppositional twist of the ribs creating a tension that releases and carries the twist to the other side moving the body forward. The circling of the pelvis that you describe and the oppositional movement of the upper body created by the lower and higher abdominals creates this twist or "spring mechanism". It is why flexibility and the free movement of the rib cage is such an important part of a healthy, easy and efficient gate.

Thanks very much. I haven’t read any Gracovetsky, but it definitely sounds interesting line with my mechanics. The controlled fall idea is terrible and leads many people to poor walking mechanics.

I agree; that's why It is very difficult for mi to walk in the way described here because I have an scoliosis that twisted my rib cage and my pelvis perhaps from the moment I was borne and gave me two calcified lumbar vertebra, although it was discovered by my parents ( both MD) when I was a teen ager. So this rotation movement is really painful for my right side and I walk better in a more rigid way. Better, but no confortable although some of the ideas from Dr. Todd Martin have given me a more relaxed perspective. So as I cannot untwist myself well... Your commentary is very helpful thankyou very much.💙

Thanks Doc. I'll try it in the AM. I usually do 20-30 miles/week. I will often do a slow jog. Maybe just compensating for bad form. Very good, thanks.

This is great is it really just those two rotations🎉😮😊

Yes, at the core level, it is alternating circles. You have to initiate and transition each circle correctly using the core. Each core movement will trigger the correct knee and ankle movements.

Well, I do agree about most of u'r conclusions but the real change occured when I changed to bare foot shoes 2 years ago. After some months my walking technique adjusted by itself. I am heavily platfooted + severe arthritis in both knees. Last 10 years walking constant connected to pains and now no painkillers! As soon I change to ordinarie shoes I get pain again. Why? Landing on your heels with ordinariy shoes stops the natural rotation and creates the wrong load. A welcome byproduct is that after 40 years of use I have been able to throw away my foot insoles . All my foot muscles and arches have been strengthened considerably. It took about 1/2 year to get there.For me the main cause was not wrong thinking but the shoes! 🙏

I don’t disagree. Different things can prompt the change. I am glad the barefoot shoes worked for you.

Great explanation. I have recently heard a podcast insist on the hips being kept stable so that the drive forward could come from the glutes, but everything works much better for the knees etc. with the hip bones moving forward and back driven by the lower abs and the front hip flexors themselves. I think the Harvard researchers found this but I only remember them mentioning it in terms of speeding up. Logically it would have to apply to slower walking as well I think.
@ToddMartinMD4 күн бұрын
I disagree with them. Keep in mind, most people who study walking do so by observation, and it is easy to be fooled by analyzing walking based on what you can see. Some people do over-swivel the hips, but that is a different matter and is actually caused by forcing with the glutes.

Can you share a link? I would be interested to hear that podcast.

@@ToddMartinMD It was actually a webinar and was on Zoom. It cut off with tech difficulties before the end and is supposed to be being recorded and redone, but if I can find a link I will send it. I will have to wait for the recording, so do not know when.

@@ToddMartinMD This is just a section of advice from Harvard..." Stretch your spine. Your shoulders should be level and square, neither thrust back nor slumped forward. Tuck your buttocks in. When your body is in alignment, you should be able to draw an imaginary straight line from your ear through your shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle when viewed from the side. Bend your arms. Flex your elbows at close to 90° angles and let your arms swing at waist level. Your fingers should be curled, but not clenched in a fist. Swivel your hips. A slight pivot at the hip can add power to your stride. Flex your feet. Come down on your heel; lift up off your toes. A person walking behind you should be able to see the sole of your shoe as you walk. Take measured steps. Too long a stride throws you off balance. Concentrate on taking shorter steps, but more of them." It seems to be largely in agreement with yourself, Dr. Todd. I don't quite understand if the lower abs are moving across as they should how this would NOT swivel the hips to some degree. The hip bones surely can't be independent from the lower ab muscles.

during walk push your right leg toes is right or wrong plz reply me

I would never focus on pushing your toes. I would always focus on moving your center correctly and the legs and arms will follow.

The weight will begin toward the heel and end on the ball from beginning to end of the swing through.

What do you think about the Nordic walking ?
@ToddMartinMD4 күн бұрын
I think it could be good add some slight resistance for the upper body as the pole pushes blood the ground. This could slightly increase the intensity of the exercise.

I do that in many other videos. This is the way to walk, but providing a different visual perspective of how you should be thinking about it. Sorry you found it confusing. But, it may give you a different understanding of the videos where I am literally saying, “do this, then this, then this.”

Torso must do a job, not being static! This is one important point. It is not a leg pushing but it is the torso which twisting moves forward the leg...
