Todrick Hall is also from Arlington, Texas and knew the trio when they were growing up, though he's a few years older than they are. Todrick published this on his KZbin channel in 2013, just two months after Kirstin's twenty-first birthday. This was the first time Kirstin actually took the lead in anything Pentatonix did. The little dog Kirstin was holding in the first scene was Todrick's dog, and it was actually named "Toto," but once Dorothy lands in Oz Toto is played by Kevin. This is because they needed a reason for Kevin to appear in every scene and they were running out of characters. Note that Toto sure seems to be singing a lot, considering that he's supposed to be a dog. Each of the three companions Dorothy met in Oz had his own quest that made him want to meet the Wizard: • The Scarecrow wanted a brain, so Scott, as the Scarecrow, sings "Do you think about me still?" • The Tin Man wanted a heart, so Mitch, as the Tin Man, sings, "My heart is broken, so broken." • The Cowardly Lion wants courage, and is trying to cover up his cowardice with bravado, so Avi sings "I can't be tamed, I can't be blamed, I can not be..." (Note: You can find the lyrics and sources here: genius.com/Todrick-hall-the-wizard-of-ahhhs-lyrics ) Kirstin played all three of the major female characters from the movie: Dorothy Gale, Glinda the Good Witch, and the Wicked Witch of the West (Side). But Dorothy also needed to be in the scenes with the witches, so they made sure to show Dorothy only from the back in those scenes, so she could be played by a stand-in. The same is true of the Scarecrow in the scene with the Wicked Witch of the West Side, because Scott and Kevin were playing the two guards behind the witch. The costumes were rented from a professional costume company; I'm impressed that they had a munchkin costume available for a man who's 6'4". The time spend doing Musical Theatre when the trio were youngsters has definitely paid off in this very cool production. Kirstie was just amazing in this. Next up? Defying Gravity.

The "cup song" is from the movie Pitch Perfect, performed by Anna Kendrick as her audition to join the a cappella group. Interestingly, Pentatonix had a cameo role in Pitch Perfect 2, as a Canadian a cappella group during the competition. Kirstie really is showing off her musical theater skills in this video - 3 roles, all done flawlessly. I may like her Wicked Witch the best - talk about owning the screen, even for as short as it is! Pentatonix has done a complete cover of Over the Rainbow, and Kirstie performed it solo on a TV special for a dog show (that's available on YT). A lot of the songs in the final medley were also done in the Home medley PTX performed on their At Home EP, recorded "at home" during the lockdown.

If you want to get background on Todrick but also get a taste of his varied musical style, watch his whole Straight Outta Oz "visual album". (It's on youtube also, & about 1 hr, so if you want to film a reaction of it you'll probably break it up into 3 parts at least.) It's the autobiographical story of his life to that point, with songs linked by his narration. Not just him singing though, it features some other great singers. The song Black & White which others recommended is part of it. Technically you can look up each song & play the video separately, but I always recommend the entire album because then you get the narration explaining the inspiration for each song & learn about him as a child & how he got started. He covers his childhood, first love, leaving home, the ups & downs of getting into the business. There's drama, sadness & humor! ❤
