TOEFL Listening - 5 MISTAKES You Must AVOID!
In TOEFL Listening you can easily make mistakes that cost you a lot of points. I show you 5 mistakes you must avoid if you want a high score in TOEFL Listening. All of these mistakes make you lose points and lower your TOEFL Listening score. The good news is that you can easily avoid them if you know about them. When doing the TOEFL Listening task, always remember not to make these mistakes. This is the easiest way to improve your TOEFL Listening score!

FYI
The examples I use in the video and in the illustration are made up by me.
1) You write down the main idea immediately
If you write down the topic of a lecture at the beginning of the lecture and if you think this is the main idea, you make a huge mistake that will cost you points. In TOEFL Listening it is highly likely that you get the question: “What is the main idea of the lecture?”. When the lecture starts the professor usually introduces the topic. Do not think that this topic is the main idea of the lecture. You must wait until the end of the lecture and you must then look back. Ask yourself: What does the professor want the students to know after the lecture? What is the purpose of the lecture? This way you can figure out the correct answer.
2) You lose your focus
If you lose your focus in TOEFL Listening, this can end in a disaster. In the worst case you cannot follow anymore and this means that you will not be able to answer a lot of questions in the end. This is exactly what Shiray pointed out when she talked about her TOEFL Listening experience. When she was practicing for TOEFL Listening, she lost her focus several times and could not answer the questions. She then realized that she had to listen very attentively and focus more to understand all the important information she needed to answer the question correctly. Shiray got a very high TOEFL score. If you want to know more about how she prepared, have a look at our interview here: • TOEFL Home Edition - S... .
3) You write down emotions
If you write down emotions, you lose valuable time and you risk getting distracted and losing focus. In TOEFL Listening you may get a question asking you about the emotions of a speaker, that is, how the speaker felt about something. Usually we remember emotions quite well because we understand how someone may feel in a specific situation. That is why you do not have to take notes of emotions in TOEFL Listening. Of course, if it is hard for you to remember emotions, you should write them down. Remember to keep it as short as possible. However, if it is easy for you to remember emotions, you should not take notes of them.
4) You skip a question
Guys, this is a huge mistake. In TOEFL Listening you cannot go back to a question. If you skip a question, you will lose a point. TOEFL Listening is different from TOEFL Reading. In the reading section you can skip a question and go back (I do not recommend this) but in TOEFL Listening you cannot. Therefore, always choose an answer before you go on with the next question. In TOEFL Listening you do not get penalty points for a wrong answer, so it is always worth trying. If you do not know the answer, trust your intuition, maybe the answer is correct.
5) You spend too much time on a question
Spending too much time on a question can cost you a lot of points. That is why you should absolutely avoid this mistake. If you have tried to figure out the answer but you cannot solve the question, choose any answer and go on. Do not spend more time on this question. Most questions are only worth 1 point. Of course, this 1 point is important to you because you want to get as many points as possible in order to get a high TOEFL Listening score. However, you must not forget that there are still further questions that you need to solve. If you spend too much time on a specific question, you will not have time for the other questions. This means that you will lose a lot more points and not just 1 point. If you do not know the answer to a question, trust your intuition, choose an answer and go on with the next question.

When I took my TOEFL, I lost focus in my last listening task 🙈. It was so bad that I almost had no idea what the lecture was about when I was about answering the questions. That affected my score. I feel like I could have gotten a 30 if not for that. Ended up getting a 26.

My name is Gustavo and I watched your videos about the speaking section of the TOEFL. They are really helpful, but I still have a doubt. I already know how the structure that I am gonna use for the questions (templates). I also can think about it in my preparation time. But my problem is when comes the time to speak, I don’t know how to develop the reasons I thought. Do you have any tip that can help me?
@juva
@juva 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Gustavo, I'd recommend this: write down keywords for your reasons and examples so that you have a basis that you can use. Have a look at my video where I explain how you should take notes in TOEFL Speaking. When you start speaking these notes are your lifebelt because they guide you through the speaking section. Hope this helps :)

Please clarify this :( If I got less score (say around 70) on first attempt and on my second attempt if I got relatively more score like 100 then is there any problem regarding this for ETS. Will ETS evaluate my score and send to me or they will review the score and cancel it? (since my first attempt was very bad :( )

Hi Reshma, if you take the TOEFL and you do not cancel your scores, you will get a score report from ETS regardless of whether you already took the test before. Hope this helps :)

Hello, I practice 4 sections of TOEFL differently and I never sit and do all 4 sections together will this affect me on test day?
@juva

Hello :) Don't worry, that's no problem. However, I'd recommend doing at least one practice test where you do all 4 sections so that you get a feeling for the real TOEFL test.

Hi juva, I have a doubt to ask you about. It is said that the universities are not accepting the TOEFL ibt home edition. They only accepts the toefl exams we do from the test centers.
@juva
@juva 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sonm, this depends on the university. I needed the TOEFL for the University of Oxford and they accepted the TOEFL Home Edition. However, some universities may not accept it. Therefore, I'd recommend contacting your university and asking them whether they accept the Home Edition or not. Hope this helps :)

That's a great question! Usually, some questions will be easier for you, so you might need less time for those, while others will be harder and thus take more time. On average, you have about 1 minute per question. Hope this helps!
