I'm going to attend to the ibt exam tomorrow in a test center. I built up confidence and knowledge against toefl with tst prep's content on youtube solely. My goal is to score 21, 21, 21 and a 24 on writing, which is the minimum score to get into my dream university. I will come back to the comment section in a few days when my grade is announced, and if my grade is satisfactory to you, I strongly recommend you to spare only 2-3 days to watch as many videos of tst prep as you can because that's the only thing I did. Thank you very much Josh :) Greetings from Turkey ❤

Hello Josh, I just want to thank you for your extremely helpful videos which I binge-watched one week before my TOEFL and I got 107( Reading 28, Listening 28, Speaking 25, Writing 26) which is enough for the colleges I am applying too. Thank you so so much , without these thoughtfully curated videos and templates it would not have been possible. Also best of luck to those who are going to give the exam, keep calm and you will ace it!.

Although these are unofficial scores but I received a 29 in the Reading section and 28 in Listening. Josh, I have a question. At 05:27 The question says, "Using points and examples from the talk, explain two main theories to explain why aggression exists.” It does not ask us to define aggression and then explain the two theories. So, if we still define it, isn't it not answering the question and adding more information that's not being asked? Additionally, If we still do it, woudn't the human raters be able to identify it as being part of a template and then it might affect the score because ETS has cautioned several times against using templates. I thought the answer to this would start directly from theories because there is no need to define the concept. I am asking this to just as a clarification. This in no way is intended to demean the work you are doing here. Your lectures have been extremely helpful, and I have nothing but gratitude for you.
@TSTPrep
@TSTPrep 11 ай бұрын
Hi there and thank you for your questions. Of course, you can add a definition, that's totally fine. It would be strange to start your response without defining the topic. As for the templates, it has been confirmed multiple times by graders and ETS representatives that they DO NOT DEDUCT DUE TO TEMPLATES. They can tell from the rest of your response how well you speak. Just focus on sounding comfortable and natural.

Hey Josh, this video is really helpful. I am gonna use this template. I have my TOEFL test in like 5 days, on october 7. My main problem is that I end up giving only one reason and one example for first question of speaking, so will this decrease my TOEFL score? I just hope i am gonna do my best in TOEFL test.

Hey, I have my exam scheduled for oct. 7th also). Same problem here, being an introvert and overthinking person most of the times I also can not come up with more than just one reason for speaking task 1. But as far as I know if you can provide a long, sufficient reason, just one is enough. After all toefl is meant to be to test your english, not your reasoning skills. Good luck!)

@season6641, you can give two reasons or you can give one, it's up to you. I actually like to give one reason and one example, but a lot of students find it difficult, so they prefer two reasons.

Hello Josh ! Thank you for all your helpful tips ! I am soon going to pass the TOEFL but I am a little bit struggling on the Speaking section… Do you know if we can repeat the main ideas of the lecture as it is said because we only have 30s to modify our notes ? Thank you

Hi there and good question. Paraphrasing is definitely an important part of your score. Focus on summarizing the information you heard from the reading and listening passage, and you will naturally paraphrase when you speak. If you need more help, you might want to meet with a teacher for an evaluation. tstprep.com/store/toefl/toefl-speaking-evaluation/

I have a question regarding all the types of speaking tasks. In the real exam, do we get the computerized instruction, like start reading now, now listen to the lecture. If we get this computerized instruction in real exam, then I guess I'll get 3-4 seconds every time there is an instruction. For example - For the 2nd task. We get the instructions, now read the passage. The time alloted to read the passage is 45 seconds, but if I add the time for the computerized instruction then the total time is somewhat 50 seconds. So, Mr. MacPherson or any of my fellow mates who have already given the test. Please confirm this and clear my confusion.

Hey Josh! Thanks for the helpful video. I wanted to ask about the TOEFL GO app. Here's the thing: when I practice the academic discussion task on the ETS website, I sometimes end up getting 4 out of 5. However, when I practice the same question on the TOEFL GO app, I always get 5. I don't know which one is more reliable. What do you think?
@TSTPrep
@TSTPrep Жыл бұрын
I am not very familiar with the TOEFL Go. In general, though, you need to remember that any site or app where a real person is not checking your answer will never be as accurate as meeting with a teacher. This is because these apps will mostly grade your word count, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary, but it is hard for them to know if you are answering the question you have been asked correctly.

I just took the TOEFL exam and scored 25 in listening and 20 in reading. I took it because the scholarship committee told me too. Speaking and writing results are yet to come. Is that a good score? And I thank you TST prep because I might have ended up in much lower score if I haven't come across to your videos. My only resources were your videos before a week to test. Stay blessed for making our lives easier and helping achieve our goals.

Speaking speed is a crucial component of your score. You have to speak at a good pace, but you don't have to speak too fast. However, there are many other important aspects of your response that are graded. If you still have doubts, I would recommend meeting with one of our TOEFL Speaking teachers for a speaking evaluation. This 30-minute call was designed to give students like you feedback on their strengths and weaknesses. tstprep.com/store/toefl-speaking-evaluation/

Hey Prof. Josh! Can you please guide me to resources for transitional phrases and words? Also, I am finding it difficult to paraphrase within the given time and at times I end up repeating the content due to the time pressure. Any suggestions/tips for the same?
@TSTPrep

Hi there and yes, paraphrasing is definitely an important part of your score. I wouldn't say you have to "study" it because it would be a hard thing to work on, but yes you should avoid repeating too much of the same wording from the passages. Speaking speed is a crucial component of your score. You don't have to speak fast, but you have to speak at a good pace. You should aim to say 120 words. That’s ok if you have 10-20 words less, but if you have 20+ words less, that may be a problem. You need to increase your word count per response.

Thank you for commenting. When it comes to reading, the best way to improve is to read. If you struggle a lot with the TOEFL Reading, I would suggest investing time in a site like LingQ where you can do some extensive reading that is not connected to the TOEFL, that way you can build your skills and vocabulary with text that is a little bit easier before moving ahead with the TOEFL. If you need to talk to a teacher, you could also try a trial lesson at this link and they can give you some pointers - tstprep.com/store/toefl-trial-lesson/
