Hi, I'm watching this from Australia. I have a Tohatsu MFS50A and love it. It is my second Tohatsu, I believe I'm bound to get my services done by a Tohatsu dealer to maintain warranty, but this looks as easy as servicing my two stroke, so I'll probably do my own servicing in future. Thanks for posting and reaffirming my thoughts on servicing. really appreciate the links too, much appreciated. Cheers from Down Under!

I can’t help but notice, it looks like the drive shaft would need to be turned clockwise, not counter clockwise to get the impeller blades to sit in the orientation they were in when you pulled the pump housing off.

Glad to be of service!! This was the first time I changed any of the fluids out on mine since I bought it used and honestly it would’ve taken me probably about three hours to do everything if I didn’t have a stripped lower unit drain bolt that supposedly a qualified mechanic did previously.

Thank you for watching and subscribing! I hope it will be helpful for you with your new purchase congrats! I have a few thoughts on mine after owning it. Pros: It is light, reliable, has excellent driving ergonomics, is as fuel efficient as other outboards I have had this size, and with regards to the maintenance; The simpliq technology really has the end user in mind and made everything very easy to get to for self-maintenance. Cons: I should note that this is my experience and may differ from others, service centers are few and far in between (the one in my area closed 2 months after I purchased mine so I am SOL :/, I've had other outboards (in this case Mercury and Honda) which seems to have a bit more durable coating for the engine cowling, Simple Tohatsu service parts are EXPENSIVE and frankly a nightmare to find as discussed in the video. Even after calling corporate they essentially said best of luck. (Hopefully, the list I made will help others find/get their parts much easier and quicker.) Mercury's maintenance kits are much easier to obtain and at a reasonable price which is a huge plus. I couldn't reset my maintenance variable following the service using my owner's manual (this could just be me). Finally, I HATE the drag system for the steering I have had others that seem better designed and last longer. The friction disc wares down and doesn't provide any use after a few years. The only place I've been able to find this simple friction disk is boats . com and its not available for 3-6 months. Am I overall pleased with my Tohatsu absolutely! Would I consider another brand? Yes mainly due to parts availability, number of dealers, and amount of good reliable outboards produced by many companies out there. (Honda, Suzuki, Mercury, Yamaha, Tohatsu, etc.) Hopefully this is helpful info! - Buck Creek TV

@@BuckcreekTV Thank you for the in depth reply. I believe I will have an easier time sourcing parts as my dealer has been up and running since the 80s. And if they shut down, there is another dealer within 100 miles. I do agree with pricing of the honda suzuki merc parts. We had a merc for years and loved it. The big reason we chose Tohatsu was the variable rpm. We are going to use the 50hp for trolling at 650 rpm. The other brands do not offer this feature and I would need a kicker motor with the other brands to troll. I'm new to the outboard world, so i don't quite understand what you mean by ''friction disks''. Thank you for the video and the part links! cheers

I don’t think you mentioned service intervals. Is there an hour meter on this motor? What’s tohatsu service interval on all these items? Great videos! Really enjoyable presentation and info. Thanks!!!
@BuckcreekTV
@BuckcreekTV 8 ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it and found it. Tohatsu's service manual isn't extremely helpful with service intervals although it is available on page 63 of the service manual. In essence they recommend checking fluids prop, and filter(s) every 50 hours, change fluids every 100 hours and then check everything and replace any worn items such as the impeller and oil filter at 200 hours. Instead I separated it into 100 and 300 hour service intervals like most other manufacturers. In essence fluids and checks every 100 hours and everything in this video at 300 hours

Tohatsu doesn't have a service interval on it. It wouldn't hurt to check but it doesn't have to be replaced regularly.

@BuckcreekTV
@BuckcreekTV 6 ай бұрын
@@cliffhalljr3426 I had a hard time finding that particular part number. The lower unit oil gasket is part number 332-60006-1 and the oil drain gasket is part number 3R3074060. Fortunatley the gaskets/washers are pretty universal so it does not have to be that specific part

@@BuckcreekTVsince you lubed it I doubt it matters if they are started backwards. You can verify the motors rotation direction by looking at the timing marks on the flywheel if you can see them. If it rotators clockwise the ATDC marks (usually 0-10deg) are to the right of TDC and the BTDC marks (0-30 or deg) are to the left.
