its called a p-trap , back in the day houses didnt have it on the inside (where im from) rather at the base of the house, there woulkd only be one for the hole house, these things were hard to mantain so WALA now u got a gaurd against smelly stuff at every drain. also theeres no pressure, its just gravity and how clean the drainage holes are... the only pressure is the water coming into the tank through the intake hose.... correction, u do need a certain amount of water to make this work so i guess im a ding dong that would be pressure, but yea i just felt like expandin on yr comment

Overly complicated. Basically it's just a giant siphon. When you add enough water the angled siphon at the bottom of the toilet is sealed off and the weight of the water below the curve pulls the remaining water and its contents out of the bowl.
