Pirates haven't exactly been remembered for their good hygiene. Usually we think of them as smelly, dirty, unshaved brutes. And that image isn't entirely undeserved. Sailors were not known for their cleanliness. As the days and weeks went by, dirt, sweat and grime would congeal and turn their skins almost black. Some might have a wash every third day, and that was limited to just dunking yourself with a bucket of seawater, in which soap was useless.

Two additions on the topic of toilets 1. For larger ships at the stern of the ships the fancy extensions like two balconies / Bay windows on both side that extend over the Sea are called the quarter gallery and this is where the captains and other higher ranking officers toilets were located. There was normally just one toilet on one side but they have a quarter gallery on both side to make it symmetrical. 2. Some larger ships of the period at the front of the ship they had roundhouses (you can see them at the front of HMS Victory and some interpretations of the Queen Anne's Revenges design) more private and out of the elements for the officers when they are on military and merchant ships that is. Hopefully I have explained that well enough so people get what I'm on about. But in short the higher ranks in the age of sail got the fanciest Portaloos / Porta-potties known to man.

It does make sense, and yeh they were pretty darn fancy, especially aboard military ships captained by particularly high ranking officers.

Journeyman plumber here. Restaurant grease traps are right up there with human decomposition in my humble opinion. Every once in awhile, I would come across a bathroom that gave an odor of what I can only describe as "dinosaur-ish." This really warm aroma of rotting vegetation mixed with a bit of un-refined petroleum. Like %90 sure that's what Brontosaurus turds would smell of 😂 I imagine a pirate ship smelling of salty death was probably demoralizing to all parties involved lol

@GoldandGunpowder

Piracy largely spawned in the Americas since the Spanish(who had the most colonies) forbade trade with other nations and even between its colonies. So piracy and smuggling often became the only option to acquire certain goods or provide them. When the other European nations acquired trading rights with the Spanish they began cracking down on piracy. For example, England signed a peace treaty with the Spanish in 1671 and pursued a very active smuggling network(the sloop trade), it worked so and so. The French made peace with the Spanish in 1697 after half a century of near-constant war, and 3 years later they became an ally and very, very important trading partner. In the 1710s the English made peace with the Spanish again and acquired the Asiento - a permission allowing their African Company to legally supply the Spanish with slaves. Before, the English had only sold slaves to the Spanish through smuggling and piracy.

If the slavers had perfume then the pirates may have stolen it at times or afforded their own after a good plunder. I did read there was soap in the 18th century, it just wasn't the good smelling kind we are accustomed to so it wasn't very trusted or popular of course. Cleanliness had some association with vanity and many people thought it was a waste of money. I have a book that mentions that navy men of the time sometimes used sails to bathe in. Not sure if it's true or if you've ever came across any information on that? Some books may confuse time periods a bit perhaps. It would seem that if they used a bell as diving vessel to retrieve things in the water (as well as a large rock prior to that) that it could be likely that pirates could have used a sail as a makeshift bath. Not saying it happened for certain just what I saw in a book. They collected land water as often as possible by the barrels so they weren't always limited to the first supply of water they took aboard from what I've learned here on the good old G&G. Thanks for providing such interesting content and since I am making a pirate game it defiantly will come in handy.

Very interesting video once again! I like the addition of the subtitles, even while you do speak very well anyway, it still clarifies. I guess Jack Sparrow in Potc 4 said it right when he guessed that they had been sailing for many days because of the "smell of the crew". I had not heard of the "urinals" before somehow. Hygiene was probably the worst part of sailors' or pirates life, at least when looking from modern perspective. Imagine that the sailors sailed in the tropics and had often parasites and diseases, hygiene was not making it any better, dysentery and such followed. Anyways, I think it is interesting to study these things while one is sitting on your own clean armchair. Good content and also a great example that sometimes common conceptions (ie. pirates were dirty) was true, but is applied to any sailors and in some ways other people of the era. Cheers! 🏴‍☠

The "Head", was reference to the place where the ships "figure head' was placed. On sailing ships it was also down wind. Other than Master's Mates, and Pursers it was unlikely that a common seaman needed to know how to read or write. For these men the Captain would on Sunday recite the rules or laws of the ship/Navy (such as the articles of war on King's ship).

Before the video starts for me: Pirates were often ex merchant or military navy and there for had learned a certain hygiene discipline. They rather chose to be lax than that it was utter ignorance. Edit (afterwards): The bilge was always flooded because wooden ships are always sinking because of leaks. Thats why there is a pump. So imagine stinking seawater with puke and shit and urine just vaporing to the decks above. Not a good timem

Many pirates were members of the order of the 🌹(freemasons/descendents of Templars) so the rule of silence would've prevented them from divulging such secrets in a journal etc. As it always is w/ the mystery schools & their teachings one takes blood oaths to never divulge anything the order does etc. I was a member of the modern iteration & speaking these secrets have gotten a price put on my head. I have the scars to prove it. Stabbed & shot by someone i called brother & left for dead. To this day i cannot return home for fear of endangering my family. I must live as an outlaw. If people do not wake up to this soon then they may just find themselves enslaved or worse. Godspeed sir.
