Great video. I know a lot of people frown on refinishing old firearms, but I’ve done my Tokarev, my Beretta, a Mosin Nagant, and an SKS. Stripped all the old bluing off the steel and then refinished them with the Beechwood Casey products, and stripped the wood all the way down, and restrained and varnished them. Guns look beautiful! And I enjoyed doing them. I’m not worried about them losing value, because I didn’t buy them as an investment. I bought them as enjoyment.

Mate, I am a professional gunsmith. I have watched most your videos AMAZED by what you can do with a file. When you polish rounds like the top of the slide slide, do them first with sandpaper in a shoeshine motion. Then polish your flats with a flat file. I prefer to draw file them but do whatever works best for you. You'll put the sharp line at the transition in with the file and you'll have a lot nicer round from the paper

The beauty comes, when the surface is smooth and lines / edges are straight. Young kids are performing this skill at Peshawar without any flaw . After the finish one gets an impression that, high tech tools and machines may have been used . But the fact is two hands, numerous files and various types of Sand papers . The result is just beauty .

I actually have been doing some of this same kind of work on some other weapons and you did a great job sir . I have found that if you use some triple "0" steel wool between blue applications you get a mirror blue finish that is second to none .I mean just beautiful ;-) Coat of super black/blue then wipe dry and hit with some steel wool then another coat of blue and then steel wool and the more you do this the better the bluing comes out . I understand what you were doing and I think it came out nice. Sounds like you know now the proper way to use a file and that you only file in one direction. You really need to get yourself a vise to hold your work as you file. You can pick up an old good quality vise for under $20 at the flea market. If you had the slide in a vise you could draw file it flat easier using both your hands to hold the file making sure you keep it flat to the work.

FYI files only cut in one direction , dragging it back dulls the file. a trick to get as much life out of your file is to fill the teeth with soapstone or hard wood like walnut. This keeps metal filings from getting stuck in file teeth. card your file frequently with a wire brush as well.

How did you blue it? Sounds like cold bluing, I usually have a hard time with them coming out so nicely, can you share with us how you do it?
@MosinVirus9 жыл бұрын
Joe Sun Hello. I honestly cannot remember which method I used. I believe it was Belgian Blue. I found that whenever boiling water is involved, distilled water should be used. Also, changing that water after every boiling is a must. Otherwise parts come out brown/dark brown. Other than that, the number of coats is important. It is easy to give up at some point when it seems you are getting nowhere. That is usually the crucial moment that makes the difference between a good blue and a bad blue when it comes to longer bluing processes like good cold blue and rust blue.

@MosinVirus6 жыл бұрын
Birchwood Casey Cold Blue.
@serafim54456 жыл бұрын

So by NOW has everyone commented on his apparent "misuse" of a file? As you might have read in the title ..this is NOT a tutorial on the proper use of a file.... If you really want to impress ....well NOBODY ..how about you all make a 6 month time lapse before AND after video showing all of us how a file should only be used one way and the conclusive consequences if done improperly....on multiple files..with multiple materials in all climates and times of day... I'm going out on a limb here and guessing he didn't spend more than $10 on his file he "destroyed" and the key word here being HIS file. So that covers the FILE , right ? WHO GIVES A SHIT ABOUT THE FUCKING FILE!! Next...PLEASE someone post ANYTHING showing how he RUINED this gun or slide ? This is NOT a collector grade pistol that shouldn't be touched because the value will go down ..this is a $250 surplus pistol that was already degraded when the importer put a safety where there wasn't one originally..all he did was turn a mediocre gun into a truly beautiful firearm that the end result has ZERO evidence of a novice or DIYer destroying a perfectly good , expensive, collectable piece of history.so unless you can spot any marks or scratches or signs that a gun AND a file were abused and violated SHUT THE FUCK UP!! And please include a link to YOUR video of YOU refinishing YOUR pistol with better results ... Good job man .. Try to ignore the haters that have something to say about everything.. Btw..a file only works in one direction in case you were wondering why it took 568 strokes to get the same result that previously only took 537 .good thing you didn't use your guilded 12th century million dollar file with the panda skin handle..that would just be wrong

I also own a Tok and have to give you props good job man. But I have one question, I have a Star Model B and want to go thru the same process but polish my slide to a mirror finish. If I do so since I'm sure it's regular steel, how would I keep it from rusting? Is there any kind of preventive treatment to keep it that way that would be low maintenance besides oil or lithium grease? anything I could put on it to preserve it that way without taking it to be plated since I'm on a budget?
@MosinVirus8 жыл бұрын
Blue it. As in, take it to a gunsmith that can do hot salt bluing. It shouldn't affect the polish too much. Call them first to discuss of course. You have to protect carbon steel. Oiling it is not enough. Bluing it will convert the surface to black oxide which is effectively pre-rusting the surface, so that there is no unprotected steel for the rust to form on. It is not a completely resilient finish, there is no such finish, but for high polish jobs it might be the only thing there is.

Sure a machine can make a gun that looks pretty good but hand files and hard work is what makes beautiful guns. I should note that the leading cause of bad gun builds is due to not thinking your project completely out. I usually approach a firearm project in sections and fixate on it a section at a time until I complete it. I do not work on the frame, slide, small parts fitting etc etc to pump out my gun builds. Usually it goes something like "I think I will try to fit the rails of the slide to the rails of the gun and make them as smooth and perfect as possible". Then once I am satisfied with the result I move on to the next part. I hear people say they created a 1911 in around 1 days time but the question remains did you create a good one that will hold up to the test of time and still look good 20 years from now? In that amount of time probably not. It took me 2 weeks to finish mine and I am more knowledgeable about the 1911 having done so. Sorry but a really good custom 1911 can't be done in a single day. Great work as always.

Looking at my pistol, the newer Zastava m57 has stampings and emblems on the side of the slide, and not very deep for that matter. On MosinVirus's older Russian Tok the stampings/emblem are on top, so he could get away with it without removing them. Also the new slides don't seem to be nearly as disfigured. Notice how on the Zastava the insignia is engraved, wheras the older toks are stamped into the frame. I'm also guessing they were cut with modern machining techniques and not using a buffing wheel. There may not be any need to flatten anything since it's already about as flat as you can make it to start with.

+solamisandwich05 I can confirm that no markings were removed.

Not sure exactly how ur supposed to use a file but it seems to me the way this guy uses the files seems to work just fine
@MosinVirus5 жыл бұрын
If they were better files I would definitely treat them a bit differently. :)

You know You could just strip the slide and then go straight to a “cut” & “polish” procedure 😂

Great video, showing us how to destroy a perfectly good slide, don't try this at home guys.
@MosinVirus8 жыл бұрын
Local-Yokel Thanks, I don't know how the slide was destroyed. can you elaborate?
@ChucksSEADnDEAD8 жыл бұрын
Yes, because flattening and rounding up sections just completely destroys a slide.

NEVER "back and forth" -- the mark of a rank novice and a quick way to dull a quality file. The "back-stroke" rounds over the teeth, ruining your file. Ask any real gunsmith. Flattening the sides of the slide is better done wet sanding with abrasive paper on a piece of heavy plate glass . "Back and forth" lengthwise -- long, smooth strokes -- with the slide laying flat on the wet paper on the glass. Use liberal amounts of water to wash away metal particles and keep the abrasive surface clean. Start with a coarser grit, perhaps 200 depending on how much metal you need to remove to establish a flat surface and take it in stages, always working in the same direction (never sand across a previously worked surface, you'll only make scratches that take more time to sand out) up to 600 - 800, depending on the level of shine you want. This will give you perfectly flat, crisp-edged faces on the sides of the slide.

Thank you very much. You are absolutely right.

So NEVER back and forth ? NEVER?? And in the very next paragraph you say BACK AND FORTH ?? I know you are talking about a file and sand paper..but I feel its my duty to frivolously point out your misuse of the English language ..because NEVER would imply in NO CIRCUMSTANCES or situation would you do something..like go BACK AND FORTH ..yet here you are saying to go BACK AND FORTH ...ironic isn't it ..and also very annoying that someone is telling you that you are doing something wrong when you are just trying to help or share your experiences with others .
