Great video! I did the same upgrade on Token Ninja PF30 (before I've seen this tutorial ;-)) The results are great, no BB creaks since 1,3kkm. Previously I used Praxis PF30 converter and creaking recurred after 200-300 km.

I did the same type of conversion myself. A good idea indeed to not put the crank spindle in direct contact with the bearings. First I ordered two pairs of plastic cups from aliexpress (from different suppliers). I found that they were way too loose on the crank spindle. They were way out of spec. Could not use them, the crank was rocking. Then I thought I would order it from Hambini but his are waaay too expensive. In the end I ordered a pair of bearings from C-bear which come with the cups included. Another cheaper option is to get for example a Katana bb and use the plastic cups from that. I find them to be quite good as well. There might be the need to shave off some plastic from both options, as they are a bit wider than what the token bb accepts.

Yes, buying the caps from aliexpress is a little risky because the tollerances are all over the place. In fact I bought a ztto bottom bracket to test for my sram gxp conversion and it has way better caps eventually. Now I'm using sram red crank so I re-installed the original token bearings without caps cos of the type of adapter.

I owned SRAM PF30 w/ BB30 which has used the same idea. In my case it was Ø30mm plastic cap inside of Ø31mm bearing. As you stated, this design is supposed to decrease the speed of wear of the spindle. However after 12k km the wear was already huge which forced me to buy new cranks and BB. So now I got Token Ninja PF30 w/ BB30 with direct contact to spindle. To this I have more confidence. This plastic cap made me believe of being responsible for such wear. Even tho it's made of hard plastic, it is still a plastic which is able to deform by even few micrometers but that mighr be enough to cause the wear on 10k+ km.

Don't think so..plastic is way softer than metal and the bearing is harder than the metal used for the spindle

@@Bedasek Not really. There's a reason why Hambini (i think Peak Torque too) hates aluminum spindle, as well as why he puts plastic sleeve in his BB. I can't seem to understand your reasoning though. Direct metal to metal contact will always be worst compare to when you have a plastic sleeve inside. Even in this video, you can already see the "gauging" mark left on the crank spindle because of the steel bearing race. If this keeps up, the crank will be deform much more than just a few micromenters.

I think it depends on the supplier. Those ones are a little bit out of spec and I needed to fill a little bit the outside to let them spin free. Recently I tried the ZTTO bottom bracket and the cups included are way better and solid.

You can find lot of different sellers on aliexpress. I sanded with sandpaper, but because they were out of spec for some tenth of mm..maybe the one that you are goin to buy won't need it

@@Mark2Roll bb92 uses the same bearings as bb86 so if you're planning to do the same mod I did, you need the one I linked. It means 24mm internal shim that goes into a 25mm internal bearing (as standard size NTN). At least if you use a 24mm spindle crank

Hi man. I built the bike from scratch so the original BB was the token ninja. The bottom bracket was perfect and I did the mod just because I wanted ntn bearings. It worked really good but after some time I noticed a bad noise from the bearings and in my opinion they were fakes ntn's (the price was too good). I cleaned the ntns and I keep them as a spare and I currently use the original ones with a SRAM conversion kit from token because I have a custom sram crankset (next video)

Not at all.. I think it's because he used a 30mm axle so the inner part of the bearing was 30 and not 25 and it means you are also closer to the inner part of the BB. Anyway I don't know if it was the same tool that I bought because he also had a problem pushing the bearing completely.

I think that Token actually promotes the direct bearing - spindle contact as an advantage of their solution. Is this spindle wear really a concern when the system is properly preloaded?

In my opinion it is so, because that wear was visible after only 3 months of usage and also if the system is properly preloaded don't forget that it's not a single piece but there is a thread in the middle that adds a play. Anyway mine was mainly an experiment because I wanted to use NTN bearings

And this system with the threads still should be considerably stiffer - especially the non-lite version with decent torque there (30Nm I reckon)

@@projectcycling When you say wear, did you measure it, or are you just looking at the bit of shiny area? I run a bb90 in a trek Madone and the crank spindle runs right on the bearings. The spindle has a shiny area from the first time apart. I’ve never had a problem with wear there. About 60k miles on that crank total, multiple standard bb bearings, then after regular failures of the non drive side bearing due to water ingress, I went to ssteel angular contact bearings and they have lasted much much longer. Now with those though, they require a higher bearing preload, so maybe because of that they’re always spinning with the crank spindle instead of being frozen still, or seizing from time to time, which is what I think you’re trying to say is happening. I’d disagree with that unless there’s solid proof otherwise that it was happening to you. I think in my present situation it’s due to the AC bearing requiring a much higher preload setting, and keeping the inner race in constant rotation with the spindle.

The wear and tear of the shimano 24mm steel spindle is really a problem with the otiginal token bearings?

In the short period I don't think it's a big problem, but bearings and axle have 2 different hardnesses and in the long period the softer one will wear. If you want to use NTN you need a plastic sleeve because they don't do non standard size bearings, so the protection is just "included"

Just want to know did the Outer diameter of the bearing differ between the original BB86 bearings and the new NTN bearings after you installed the token ninja?

Hi. The outer diameter didn't change: the original token one was 37x24x7, the Ntn is 37x25x7. Having a 24mm axle you need a plastic sleeve to use the ntn's. The token BB90 uses a 37x24x7 too
