The Atari Lynx version of Toki is quite excellent, but like most games for the system, looks far better when viewing at the normal screen size, 3.5" diagonal. When you zoom out the screen, everything becomes very pixelated. The digitized audio sampling is very impressive and probably the best thing about that version that sticks in my mind. I have read that D. Scott Williamson considers Toki to be his favorite of the three Lynx titles he created (the others being Roadblasters and STUN Runner). He was a master programmer and Atari should never have let him go. The Amiga and Atari ST versions both look great and seem to play to each computer's strengths. That's nice to see, as most of the time, you'd get a multi-format title that was designed for one computer and then dumped poorly onto the other. So good for both. I didn't like the Genesis version at all when it was new, I thought the graphics looked cheap and the stages were completely different from the arcade. Today, I'd really like to give it a chance, and I give credit to Sega for creating an original adaptation that works better on the home format. They did that quite a bit during the Genesis era, and kudos to them for it.

That was one of my favorite things about Sega. The understood how to take a "quarter gobbler" from the arcade and turn it into the same experience at home but much better game play because it wasn't trying to force you to die and put in quarters to continue. Why toes the NES one look like resolution is so high? My NES version doesn't look that good at all. Maybe it's being emulated? One last thing, while it is not the best version, the ST one is really well made by someone who knew how to the best out of the machine and not just blast 3 bit planes at the video 60x second and hope it would work - as most poor ST games do. That works on the Amiga, but not on the ST. The C64 version was really poor. It should have look as good as the NES version at least.

How is the MD a "better" experience? Graphics are blunt at the very best, and the game is so boring that you risk falling asleep on your couch... There are times you wonder if they forgot to out enemies there.

Arcade for the original experience and Mega Drive for a whole new experience :D edit: the Atari ST and Commodore Amiga ports are *very* good for arcade ports on western computers (which are often lazy stuff despite the ST and Amiga being excellent machines for their time and price). @@Elbas_Tardo The ST was a budget 16-bit computer retailed for less than two thirds of the Amiga price, those differences were to be expected in some cases such as Toki here but many games look as good on both systems (e.g. Bio Challenge, Metal Masters, Vroom, Maupiti Island and so on...) making the ST an incredibly good deal at the time not to mention the MIDI ports and more reliable material.

It was a production of the French team of Ocean Software. The game seems a bit faster on computers awkwardly. Plus, Pierre-Eric Loriaux rewrote most of the soundtrack which is darker and greater than the original (level and boss theme are still great and converted from the arcade). Ocean's French team kind of put their signature on the port, that is why I guess it is so well ported. They also did the port of Pang! on the same computer, which is also well ported.

Arcade: brilliant. I loved this when I played it in the eighties. It's fun and there's something very satisfying in the physical feedback you get from just controlling the ape, jumping, shooting etc. This is something Japanese platformers excelled at - and was overlooked in European platformers, making them a chore to play. Amiga: Holy smoke, this is an excellent conversion: very close to the original: colourful graphics; lovely, smooth parallax scrolling. Great work. Atari ST: Wow, another good job. Very smart handling of a reduced colour palette. No parallax scrolling but that doesn't effect gameplay. The only thing I don't like is the weird way the scrolling shifts the screen in sharp, fast bursts when you move. It moves smoothly when you keep it going, but looks like there's some limitation at play. Great job overall, though. Genesis: WTF??? They've lost it.. Way too gloomy and depressing. That's not what Toki is. Nes: Pretty good. Due to the small sprites, the space ends up becoming enormous. This dilutes the gameplay a bit. Lynx: hard to tell because it looks so pixelated. Seems to be a good conversion, but I assume it would look a lot better on a tiny little screen.

I think you meant "an Amiga ARCADE PORT with smooth scrolling" right? Hundreds of Amiga games have smoother scrolling than even this, since it doesn't use the hardware scrolling, pure blitter grunt. It's outstanding because the devs put in actual effort to make the most of the hardware, which was a rarity for licensed Eurotrash at that time.

Bof. La version C64 est intéressante... Never got to play the arcade game, but I have played the remaster on Switch which I believe is a 1:1 recreation with hand drawn graphics. Loved it. I also really like the NES version, although the Famicom version is a bit more faithful as it still retains one hit deaths whereas the NES release adds heart containers. The Genesis game is terrible as much as I don’t want to admit it as a Sega fan- Toki moves even slower and the game is dragged out for 9 zones. None of the new content really added anything either, outside the penultimate world having this cool little gimmick where firing would illuminate the caverns.
