Japanese rent is insanely cheap compared to cities in America so it really isnt a rip off. they likely make the barrier to entry high bc every time a tenant moves out there are bigger costs so they bill accordingly and dont totally fūck you every month by having high rent. in America those costs are moved into monthly rent.

It is technically not legal in Japan to specifically discriminate against foreigners on housing. The place I currently live had a "no foreigners" clause, but the realtor who I worked with was an awesome Japanese guy who basically said "that's bullshit, we're just going to ignore them". Shoutout to Aoyama-san!
@coolbones
@coolbones 3 жыл бұрын
There's no "technicality", it is illegal. There are Japanese laws against discrimination. It's something else though if the person doesn't speak Japanese or hasn't been in the country long enough to understand what is and what isn't ok to do. Like americans driving nails into the walls to hang stuff, like in their own country. jesus christ...

@user-ij1re3li6f 3 жыл бұрын
The libertarian philosophy has an interesting opinion on discrimination. It shouldn't be forbidden. When you discriminate you limit your options, so you penalize yourself with your choice. If a landowner doesn't want foreigners, there you be fewer people able to rent the place, making it less easy to get a deal and earn the rent. While the place is empty the owner doesn't see the income. And let's not forget that the owner owns the place, it's his/hers to do whatever he/she wants. If the owner wants to leave the place empty, it's an option. If he/she wants to live there, it's another option. Nobody has a right to rent somebody else's place, if this somebody doesn't want you there. It sucks to be discriminated, but people have opinions and preferences, you just have to work with this.

The intense joy at finally having certain creature comforts that seem normal for other people is such a mood. I also recently moved and just having your own kitchen with the surface area to be able to cut your veggies and stack dishes without having to do weird quantum puzzles is such an amazing feeling. Having a normal shower to yourself, having the space to store all your belongings and not have half your life stacked up in boxes... I can't remember the last time I felt so elated.

omg moving in JP seems like a nightmare. I moved from malaysia to singapore in 2019. just drove my car down one monday, parked at the HDB, viewed the apartment, and promptly moved in, paid 1 month's deposit in the same night, and then the next day drove my car back up to KL(to avoid SG's expensive tolls etc). it was a pretty tiring two days but watching this really gave me perspective and a newfound appreciation for how simple it was for me.

All the while working full-time without being able to take some time off... I feel like crying half the time because it's just so much. It's gonna be over soon, tough, and seeing your video gave me hope that it will be all worth it! (Also, feel you on the expensive thing. @@CarinaCoffee exactly! For this apartment, there was no kitchen but it had really odd measurments, so i needed to buy a whole new one, including the appliances... I sometimes wish we did this like other countries do... I rarely hear someone complain when there's already a kitchen in an apartment but people always complain when there's none, so I wonder why we do this... it's a hassle for everyone. And if you really really want your own kind of kitchen then it's gonna cost you anyway, getting rid of an existing one won't be that much more expensive :(
@CarinaCoffee
@CarinaCoffee 3 жыл бұрын
@@LovelyDray but aren't unfurnished ones cheaper? It sucked at first, but than I'm really glad I got a kitchen after my own taste and since they're modular it's usually easy enough to move them. (Plus, sometimes the renter before you will sell theirs if it doesn't fir their new place). I feel like stone countertops are a thing people usually do in places where they own, not rent and the standard countertops for modular kitchens you can saw if you need to to fit them with the cabinets or if you need a new one they're not costing you the world. My friend moved last summer and her flat came with a kitchen, but there's only a single drawer, on the opposite side of the fridge and stove, so if you need a certain tool, you need to cross over to get it. It's not too far, but it would bother me in the long run. Things like that are more important to some people than others, so you get the choice for yourself.

@@sokolshala485 I think you’re right. But it is so silly. Most gov institutions in the U.K. offer a translator to largest ethnic groups so they’d be able to access services but for them finding work would be impossible without knowing English. Unless they work in communities that cater only to their community I guess. But even then, they’d be living like 30% of their potential that could be enjoyed, living in the U.K.

Every country should do that. I think if you move yourself to another country yet speak none of the language it’s so disrespectful. I’ve lived in 4 countries and immediately made efforts to learn at least the basics of each language to get by. I am now in the U.K., this was obviously the easiest language to learn but I can’t imagine not knowing English living here :D

The Japanese renting system is so broken... It's less hassle to buy a house in most countries.

Right?! Totally agree. I found myself wondering how anyone there saves up for that. Especially if you're doing mainly free lance work. That's nuts. We just moved house two months ago here in the US. Sold our house and moved to a rental in another state. It cost us almost that much for first, last and deposit, but it's a 3 bedroom House, not an apartment! If we hadn't just sold our home we never could have afforded it.

@@kenziedayne4234 Ouch. I don't have much experience moving homes etc but yeah, sounds bonkers she's able to afford it doing free lance work but I guess that's her business. I know one thing... she's got more money than me lol. I think employees definitely get paid more in Japan.
