Your videos are fantastic. It makes the book much more understandable. I like the short version without the chat. It must be a lot of work to edit them. Thank you for your time and effort. With the dialogs, it's great having the slower speed speaking followed by normal speed. Also, colour coding the different parts of the dialog sentences makes them much easier to follow. Changing the topic slightly. Adding spaces between words would be my suggestion for an introduction to Japanese book, like Genki 1. It would make the Japanese sentences much easier to start reading initially. By the time someone gets to the next book, the spaces wouldn't be necessary.
@ToKiniAndy4 жыл бұрын
I'm happy to hear that you are finding them useful! I agree that spaces would be a good idea for beginner books!

Fast way to remember. Take the verb, change to masu form, add "te", then say it fast and sloppy. This is basically how the modern "te" form came about.

I love how he actually explains when he doesn’t like something in the text book. It’s something I always missed in when taught English in school, teachers strictly went by the text book and I was always so confused because the text book had the most unrealistic and unnatural English in history.

You (and Genki textbook, but mostly you) brought so much logic to the verbs topic for me. I was touching n3 grammar, but still struggling with verbs, because I was told to just learn all the ichidan verbs in order to tell ru verbs from each other. So naturally I dove into despair and just left the topic for good. Now I finally get it. I get it! THANK YOU!

You probably won't see this but, I wanted to tell you how much appreciation I have for the way in which you format these videos, including the website subscriber videos, because they are easy to listen to while driving. There are a lot of nice videos out there, but most require me to have to read subtitles or look at them (because they're not coordinated with Genki) because I don't know the words they're using yet. You explain things in a way that I can understand while watching and taking notes, but also in a way that I can understand while driving and the words that I don't know, you say them and explain them., so I don't miss anything. So, thank you so much. Your work has been a goldmine of help for me!

I'm writing everything you say that I think is important in my notebook to memorize it and I feel like It's working for me. I hope I can understand easy storys and videos soon so I can learn japanese that way. The only language I learned, that I am "fluent" in (depends on what you count as fluent) is english and I achieved that because I started watching english content as soon as I understood the context. I hope I'm able to learn japanese the same way soon. Thanks for your help!

To clarify, Genki presents mottekuru and tsuretekuru as irregular, because kuru itself is an irregular verb. It makes sense to categorize these complex verb as irregular also, since they end with the expected irregular te-form conjugation of kuru (kite and not kute or kutte). The same holds for "to study": noun (study) + suru = to study. Since suru itself is an irregular verb, benkyousuru is also irregular, because it conjugates based on the rules for suru (same logic for "to call" - denwasuru).

Andy, the way you explain grammar is brilliant! I am on vacation and started Genki at the beginning of August, and I've just completed Chapter 5 with you. Your videos motivate me to study more because even if I'm tired or not in the mood to learn, I just put your video on and keep going. These are so fun that I forget that I initially didn't intend to learn that much on that specific day. I loved the examples and the song! The way I remember the Godan conjugation is the ones with a curve from left to right (u, tsu, ru) are itte, the "complicated" looking ones (mu, nu, bü) are nde, su is shite like sushi(te) (the food) and ku is ite while the gu (i + basically the ku with the 2 little lines) is ide (so i + te also with the 2 little lines)

12:30 I think Genki made it because tecnically they are irregular because they are Noun Suru Verbs "denwa suru" uses "suru" which is on it self irregular "denwa shite" , i think every verb which is combination of suru or kuru makes it to a irregular verb. ChatGPT Answers: For Suru: In Japanese, "suru" (する) is indeed an irregular verb. "Denwa suru" (電話する), which means "to make a phone call," is a compound verb that uses "suru" as its verb component. Because "suru" is irregular, "denwa suru" also follows the same irregular conjugation pattern as "suru." For Kuru: "Motte kuru" (持ってくる) is a compound verb combining the te-form of "motsu" (持つ, to hold or to carry) with "kuru" (来る, to come). While "motsu" is a regular u-verb and "kuru" is an irregular verb, the phrase "motte kuru" behaves according to the irregular conjugation pattern of "kuru."

Maybe I am missing something, but it seems like the tense of the te-form when used in a sequence of events changes depending on the context? Sometimes it can turn a verb into "ate" and sometimes it can be used in "go to"? Am I forgetting something obvious or am I correct it's contextual? (sorry if this is explained later in the lesson, still not done yet ha) edit: Nevermind... watched about 30 more seconds and saw your explanation about the final verb indicating tense. Gotta be more patient lol
