Seoul, South Korea and Tokyo, Japan
Not only are they two of the most important cities in Asia, they're two of the most important cities in the world. Both the biggest in their respective countries, and yeah, both dominate politically, economically, and culturally in their respective countries. It's really hard not to be overshadowed by them. About 25% of all Japanese residents live in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Oh yeah, and that metropolitan area is THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD, with 37.8 million people. Sooooo many people.
But Seoul has the fifth largest metropolitan area in the world. Look at all THOSE people. Wow. It has a population of around 25.6 million people. And even though it only makes up about 12% of South Korea’s total area, it’s home to almost HALF of South Korea’s total population. Woahness.
Both are the capitals of their respective countries. Both are filled with magnificent modern buildings that could easily provide a reliable backdrop for any film set in the near-future. Why? Because war devastated both cities during the 20th century.
Even though both are megacities, both are surprisingly clean and sleek.
Both are all about trade, leading the world in both exports and imports. It’s easy to get around in both cities. Both have amazing public transportation, and huge rail networks. Tokyo has the busiest metro system in the world, and Seoul has the third busiest. Tokyo is famous for having so many people packed onto subways during rush hour that they literally have to be pushed onto trains to fit. The city has pushers, or railway station attendants who push people onto trains so they fit. Yes, this is real footage. Public transport is cheaper in Seoul.
Both are two of the most visited cities in the world. (T-8th most, S- 10th most)
Both have a fairly homogeneous ethnic population. Most Seoulites are Korean, and most Edokkos are Yamato Japanese. Now, this is starting to change since the foreign born population in both cities has steadily increased in recent years.

5:30 When pronouncing Romanized Korean, "eo" is pronounced "uh". So, "Hanseong" is pronounced "han-sung". Also, "u" is pronounced "oo". So, if you want to sound like a native Korean you can pronounced "Seoul" as "suh-ool" (2 syllables) rather than "sole" (1 syllable).

@Ernie Kileste Equally both country are safe. Look up President Park Chung Hee, he pretty much swept out the gangs back in 60's and putting them into military boot camps. That's is why today South Korea there are not too many gangs there. Most of the crimes they do are scamming and phishing.

-Living in both cities here's some practical differences living in them: Tokyo - Pretty quite at night - Really clean in general, one of the cleanest city that I visited - Many things are detailed, small and cozy, like living, food, designs - Get your real money, many shops do not accept credit cards - People are polite, but it might be quite hard to make close friends with Japanese. Kind of distant - Many paperworks are still analog like using fax or sending letter by post. It is changing with Covid though Seoul - Noisy at night as there are many drunks and cars moving, loudest night city - Fun things to do at night even if you don't drink, many 24 hours facilities like Lan house(PC-bang), Karaoke(No-re-bang), Spa with dry sauna (Jjim-jil-bang) - Many process are digital, from online paperworks, paying with cards or apps - Incredible delivery system. They are fast, cheap and safe (if you drop it at door, nobody will pick up) and you can buy pretty much anything - Drinking can make you fast friends. Most popular drink Soju (liquor of 20%) is really cheap ($3 a bottle) and it is common to go out to drink with friends or to make friends - Most are pretty impatient, which make many services fast but a bit hard to keep up sometimes. - Many car accidents, with heavy drinking culture and impatient people, you better be extra careful driving. Both cities are safe, people are well educated and hardworkers and have wonderful foods and things to do. If you like peaceful, everybody polite, cozy and clean, kind of a city, Tokyo is for you. If you like to go out and have fun with friends, make many friends, like convenient things, Seoul is for you. For me, I would prefer to travel to Tokyo and live in Seoul

one japanese agreed. as we live in the 21 century, we've got to live now and look for tomorrow rather than vilify each other. it's true there were disgusting events in the past and it's important to acknowledge what happened in the last century. it cannot be justified. i'm sorry for them. but it's also true that we, who live today, are not responsible for that history. We all were born without any discrimination, hostility or nationalism, and it's us who communicate. So why not stop blaming current generations for past transgressions?! i hope japan and korea someday become good friends ;) sorry for my poor english but i'm glad if you understand what i meant to say

Good video!! Spent a year in Korea while stationed there in the US Army 1992-1993. Was stationed at Camp Castle with 2nd Engineer Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. Largest city was Tong du chon, which was about a mile walk south, just outside Camp Casey. The "D", or DMZ, was roughly 15 miles north and got to visit there. You could actually walk into North Korea, albeit roughly 12' because you were literally inside a building with a white line painted on the floors/walls/and long table depicting the actual border - got to walk around the North Korean side of the table. Have plenty of memories of the night life in Korea. made down to Seoul a few times and it is a very beautiful city - walked just about everywhere and had visited most of those places shown in the video. Tried to get to Tokyo, put only visited flying into/out of Seoul for was using military transport. Flying in: could not leave the immediate vicinity of the military side of the airport. Flying out: took too damn long to get through customs and time put aside to explore Tokyo was wasted going through customs and literally running from one end of the airport terminal to the other to catch a flight to USA. Was able to see Mount Fuji and some of the city.

Tokyo was a bit different; coming from a mega city myself, I expected Tokyo to be loud and chaotic, and was shocked when I found out it wasn’t any of that AT ALL. Still, the city itself is awesome, it carries the perfect combination of development, technology and culture. I’d recommend anyone to visit both cities. Love to 🇯🇵 and 🇰🇷 from 🇲🇽

You made one mistake. Seoul has faster data speeds than Tokyo does. I will also add that Seoul also has a lot more free WiFi spots. Obviously, not everything can and should be covered in this video in relation to comparisons between Tokyo and Seoul, but I will add these: - In Seoul and Korea, android smartphones, mostly of Samsung and LG brands, predominate, while in Tokyo and Japan, I Phones predominate. - Seoul's expressways are wider in lane width and have larger number of lanes than Tokyo's. Seoul's expressways are mostly 6 to 12 lanes wide, while Tokyo are mostly 4 lane wide. - Seoul has a much larger number and use of motor cycles than Tokyo does. - In Seoul, right hand side driving is the law, while in Tokyo left hand side driving is the law. - Seoul motorists are much more aggressive and less law abiding than Tokyo's, being less willing to stop at pedestrian crossways and run red lights. - In both Korea and Japan, domestic automaker car brands dominate, with Kia and Hyundai composing about 80% of all vehicles frequented on Korean roads, while Japan has a great dominance of a greater variety of Japanese brand vehicles like Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Suzuki, and Mitsubishi. But Korea has considerably more foreign car brands frequented in it than Japan does. - In both Korea and Japan, American car brands are unpopular. - Japanese cars not common in Korea, but Korean cars are almost entirely absent in Japan. - Video gaming is a big industry and very popular in both Seoul and Tokyo, though PC video gaming predominates is Seoul and console video gaming predominates in Tokyo. - PC bangs, which are internet cafés that are video gaming centres are ubiquitous in Seoul and Korea and they are much cheaper than Japanese internet cafés. On the other hand, in Tokyo and Japan video game arcade centres are very popular. - Educational attainment rates in Seoul and Korea, as well as Tokyo and Japan, are both high, but Seoul's attainment rates are even higher. - In Seoul and Tokyo cram schools known respectively as Hagwon in Korean and Juku in Japanese are popular, but in Seoul there are considerably more cram schools in number and attendance rates than in Tokyo. - Seoul has a significantly larger portion of its population residing in mid rise and high rise residential apartment building complexes than Tokyo does. Residential apartment buildings in Seoul tend to also be architecturally much more conformist in style and coloration than Tokyo's. - Seoul has a very small portion of its population, less than 5%, of its population residing in single family detached houses. While there are many low rise residential buildings, most of them tend to be multi unit apartments. Tokyo has over 1/5 of its population residing in single family detached buildings. - In housing construction, Seoul has very few wooden buildings, which are common in Tokyo. Most houses and low rise residential buildings in Seoul are made from sturdy clay or cement bricks. - Roofing of buildings in Seoul and the rest of Korea, whether they be tiled or non tiled are mostly coloured green, but inTokyo and the rest of Japan, there is a very great variety of colours from dull black, grey, and brown, to bright orange and teal. - Both countries consume fish in high rates per capita, but Japan consumes fish in higher per capita rates than South Korea does. - Korea is much less associated with controversies of whaling and whale meat consumption than Japan is. - Puffer fish and blue fin tuna, known as Fugu and Maguro in Japan respectively, are consumed significantly more per capita in Japan than in Korea. - Japan's largest fish market, the Toyosu Fish Market, the largest fish market in the world is located in Tokyo, while South Korea's largest fish market, the Jagalchi Fish Market, is located in Busan and not in Seoul. These are just SOME additional comparisons and differences between Tokyo and Seoul, as well as Korea and Japan
@Happynism
@Happynism 4 жыл бұрын
good! Accurate.. Seoul drivers are much more aggressive and less compliant than Tokyo, so there is less willingness to stop at pedestrian intersections and run red traffic lights. I agree with you. I didn't know well because I live in Korea, but many foreigners who come to Korea say that they are aggressive when using buses or taxis. In my opinion, Korea has far fewer traffic penalties than Japan. If public transportation goes slow, many Koreans will swear at the article. 🤣 Why do you know both countries so well? At least three years in Korea and Japan I know you have to live.

It seems that Seoul is more car friendly than Tokyo, though it still has good public transportation. Also, both countries buy domestic brands when they want affordable cars and buy foreign when they want something gaudy, so it makes sense that Koreans don't buy many Toyotas and Hondas and the Japanese don't buy Hyundais. Also, American cars tend to be too big and too unreliable for Japanese and Korean tastes, unless it's a big truck or muscle car, in that case it's a flashy purchase.

Actually Seoul got its name from an ancient name referring to Silla(신라), which was Seo-na-beol(서나벌), which was later shortened to just "Seo-beol"(서벌). Then after South Korea was established, they chose a variant of that ancient name, "Seo-ul"(서울), as the name for their capital. The name itself doesn't mean "the capital" in Korean. It's just a variant of an ancient name.

Tokyo has a unique aesthetic and we cannot ignorate that is very well organised,there are around 40million people in Kanto region and the megalopolis of Tokyo/Yokohama/Saitama/Chiba/Yokosuka is so perfect and liveble and clean,organised and rich.there is no comparison..Tokyo is almost perfect.But I love Seoul too :)

Over the past 15 years, the number of gang members has been steadily decreasing. The number of those described as “associates” has also decreased over the past eight years, and now stands at around 14,900. Both are at their lowest points since records were first kept in 1958. In recent years, arrests of members of gang members and associates have also been decreasing. Such arrests fell year-on-year by 856 in 2018, to 16,881. The main criminal offenses involving gang members were assault (2,042 arrests), theft (1,627), fraud (1,749), extortion (772) and violations of the Stimulants Control Act (4,569). As a Korean American with Japnese relatives, I lived and loved both cities so much. History or territorial disputes aside, we really need to love all. When it comes to politics, I am sure everyone got things to say and I too encourage that since debate is always the key for further development. But honestly if you've been or lived in both cities I am sure you'd see their uniqueness and get to love them all. 🙏

And see what's happening right now. Every single day we talk in phone and cry. We hope the situation get better until the winter, so we can meet again before I go to military. Wear the masks, wash your hands, and avoid crowded places folks. PLEASE. None of them cannot be lacked. Please consider each other and share the responsibility. Seoul should get Nobel prize, world No.1 city. Capital of the earth. Seoul has culture&art more than Paris, important more than New York , more economy&safer than Tokyo , bettar internet speed and subway system than London. That's why Seoul is the best. Doesn't matter what you'll say. I know All countries jealous to South Korea&Seoul❗️Because South Korea has internet speed , clean , safety and subway system. This is the only important things compare to other cities. Most greatest race. 1970 to 2010 Seoul was modernized. Very speedy. But how to modernized just in 40yrs is pure Korean own power. We've never learned by any other countries , never referenced in the world role model city, never copied or improved another cities way. That's why all we need Nobel prize.

Tokyo is cleaner, more cosmopolitan, and more expensive. Seoul is more fun, vibrant, and much more affordable. Both have great public trans, but Seoul's is much more user-friendly and cheaper. Tokyo's can be complicated and hard to understand for non-locals. Tokyo has much more interesting and varied street fashion. Both cities have amazing food, but Tokyo has Seoul beat for international cuisine and street food. You can take taxis everywhere in Seoul - they are super nice and super cheap. But in Tokyo, forget about it - you'll go broke. Seoul has a way better nightlife. Seoul also has a better airport... also, your pronunciation couldn't be worse.
