Tokyo by Bike

How about a bike around Tokyo... all of it. I go on a 120km trip from the Eastern banks of the Edogawa river to the Western banks of the Tamagawa river. It was a fun cycling trip through the city of Tokyo! Maybe next time I'll go to different cities in Japan.

I have a question that has been bugging me for a while . Here in New York you can bring your bike inside the train and in some areas the buses have a ramp where you can put your bike. Can you bring a bike to a train or bus in Japan???

I grew up in the suburbs of Tokyo in the 1960s: I rode my bike everywhere and the only thing I was afraid of was becoming totally lost in such a megacity but I was never afraid that anyone would ever harm me.

I've done this in Japan's far north during the depths of winter. I decided to walk aimlessly for a hour and try to make my way back home by only referring to the street signs. Ended up walking around all night and actually found it therapeutic.

Long time viewer first time commentator. This was one of the most charming videos I have ever seen. Are parks opened all day and night? In the States the parks usually close at dusk. Thank you again for the amazing video and the showing the Tokyo we don’t see in the movies.

Thanks! For the most part, parks are open all day and night. There are some major parks, like Shinjuku Gyoen which do close. But besides the popular central parks, I don't think they have any closing times. This is why they're really handy for going to the bathroom or getting water. _Parks in B.C. in Canada do close at dusk, and if they don't have gates preventing entry, the bathroom facilities do usually close, so that's why I find it so convenient travelling around Japan by foot or bike.

@@LifeWhereImFrom However no children are allowed at night. There typically is some old due that patrols the parks and tells kids to go home. At least, it's what I saw at various parks when I lived in eastern Tokyo. You'll typically find couples or rarely just a group of friends hanging out at night.

The difference with Japan is that people are respectful and don't damage everything that isn't locked up! As such they don't need to close parks etc. at night to prevent vandalism and damage like they do in most western countries.

Cycling through Tokyo is actually on my bucket list. To be honest I thought it would be a lot.. harder to do. Mega Citys and bicycles usually don´t mix. But this looked extremely pleasant. It's actually super easy, no inconvenience. And it's super safe. As an european, I was surprised at first about the wide berth and distance that cars pass you on. And on countryside they almost never passed me on the road closer than one meter. When you're used to managing draftwinds from narrowly passing trucks, this takes one by surprise.

Greg... I just don't know what to tell you. First of all I must commend you on the superhuman efforts you put not only into riding over 120km in a day by bike across the biggest city on Earth but also the insane quality level of the content you bring to your channel. You put so much effort and LOVE above all into everything that you do and it shows. It really does. You're a champion and you're in a league of your own. I even started getting emotional in some parts because I felt like I was right there with you seeing this with my own eyes, and no words can describe how much I wish that were true. I felt like a close friend was guiding me and showing me his favorite things in a city that he really loves. It felt really personal. Thank you for this. I can only thank you. The fun part about biking in Japan is that sometimes it's just wholesome enjoyment and immersive experience. When I went on my voyage, I just bought one of mama-chari (just like in video). That cost me 10'000 JPY. After two months I just sold it second-hand and got 7'000 back. Tourists sometimes pay thousands of yen per day just to get lost in stations and ride underground most of the day. Oh - and many hotels in Tokyo provide free bike rental service. So be mindful of that, if this is your desire for Tokyo visit.

I live and work in Tokyo in the tech industry, and honestly, it feels ridiculously affordable compared to the last two places I lived and worked in the U.S. (Fairfax, Virginia and Torrance, California). Hell, my rent in Tokyo is almost half of what it was in Torrance (I'm paying roughly the equivalent of $900/mo and living in the heart of Kichijoji), though granted it's a MUCH smaller apartment. And last year, I lived in suburban Ibaraki prefecture, and it was DIRT cheap. My apartment was huge, I had ready access to public transportation, the location was beautiful, and my rent was the equivalent of $450/mo, which is ludicrously affordable. I was on a teacher's salary at the time, too -- and not even JET, but an independent and not especially reputable teaching program -- and I still saved a ton of money over the course of the year.

When my friends and I visited Amsterdam, we were intent on biking around the city at first, then saw how fast the local experienced bikers were going. I guess it all depends on perspective! Also, you may know this but Tokyo Station (shown around 30:33) was based on Amsterdam Central.

I really loved this video, thank you for making it! I live in the Netherlands, we have more bikes than people and the entire infrastructure is made with bike paths either on roads, separate paths along side roads or just bike paths on their own. Cars are used to driving next to bikes and everyone on a bike has basically grown up on it, maybe a little less so in the bigger cities, but even in big cities bikes are aplenty. You'll see people with a kid on the front, a kid on the back, shopping bags on the side, riding like it's no trouble at all. I have two bikes, and a dog-cart so it's easier to bring my dog around, and since we currently don't have a car I could use it to haul stuff if needed, but bike-bags (attached to the sides on the back) and a basket up front go a long way. I feel like making a trip in my bike now!

6:50 In the Netherlands, there're also guides to put your wheels in, and they're placed&built so you can't ride on those at all... You can also just rebel and bounce down the stairs themselves, which is especially easy if the steps are wide

What a great video. I visit Tokyo often, so it was really nice to see many streets I'm very familiar with, as well as those I haven't seen yet. It never ceases to amaze me how such a big metropolitan area can be so calm just one lane away from a major road. I think many people have a misconception that Tokyo is an extremely crowded and chaotic city. I find it quite the opposite.

Great show! I lived near Mitaka station '63-78 and rode my 10-speed Bridgestone everywhere in Western Tokyo. We rarely had bike paths then (nor GPS), but it was so nostalgic weaving around poles and cars. I even made it to Lake Nojiri (260km) in 22 hours one summer!

For a Dutch guy like me....I absolutely Love this video you made :P Cyclist capital of the world... I did try out to cycle in Japan...but unfortunate most bikes are not made for us big Dutch ppl :P So if I wana have a cycle tour through Japan like Chris Abroad or You through a city....I'll have search deeper then the obvious tourist shops.

Yeah, the rental bikes that are easily accessible probably aren't suited to tall people. I'm sure you could rent a suitable bike, especially in Tokyo, but you'd have to do some searching. If you want to the subreddit on Japan travel, I'm sure someone there would be able to give a recommendation.

buy a dahon foldable bike beforehand or take it with you, sell it there afterwards or bring it back home. They are good even for longer distances, and for tokyo for sure. But only for

You can buy used bike and sell it back after or just bring your own. I did latter two times because I was long distance touring Shikoku. The 88 Temple Pilgrimage (八十八ヶ所巡り hachijūhakkasho-meguri)

I think most famous japanese brand is Bridgestone or Fuji. I've a cross bike which is japanese bland KhoodaaBloom. The price was over 70000yen,in 2015. Not so expensive but easy to handle it.The weight is so light. But actually,many japanese riders think japanese brand bike is not cool😂 The popular is abroad brand,like Giant,Gios,Cannondale,Bianchi,or else. If you wanna go to bike shop in japan,I recommend to go Y's road.

Today, I just got accepted to work at a company in Tokyo, Japan. So I'll be seeing Tokyo in person in March, 2021 after I get my VISA sorted. It's pretty scary moving to a new country but watching all of these videos makes it feel more like an adventure! Thanks for some tips on where to bike! Biking is my passion so I'm sure I'll be doing parts of this adventure next year! Best!

@stunnenbroowie5217 Yeah!! I'm here! I didn't get here until 2023 so I had to wait an extra two years because of covid lock downs. But couldn't be happier! Been about 9 months so far in Japan. Ended up in Yokohama, not Tokyo, but they're so close I've been all over Tokyo by now!

Your content is awesome! And I love your narration! The overall atmosphere of Japanese towns, cities etc had always intrigued me. The narrow back alley ways, the symmetrical buildings, just so many interesting things that you don’t see anywhere else (at least not here in the US).
