This beautiful film grows in strength every time I watch it. It may not quite attain the status of masterpiece, but it at least comes very close. The little girl seen here is Hideko Takamine, one of Japan's most popular female stars, starting her career as a child and maintaining it well into middle age. The shifts of emotion in this scene and the nuance by which these are expressed are masterful, exemplary of why Ozu was the single greatest director of actors in film history.
