I believed that I was pretty well versed on Disney history, but I knew nothing about this. This is what a Tomorrowland in any park deserves and it's rather incredible. Here's to hoping Tokyo's Tomorrowland does eventually get such a large scale refurb in the future.

Would have been a cool update for Tokyo Disneyland. It being unique like Disneyland Paris’ Discoveryland would have really given it a spotlight. But I have to say, being a Magic Kingdom fan I’m jealous that they still have their entryway spires. I wish they’d get rid of the rocks at MK and bring back the spires. The clean 70s look works better in MK because of the land’s size and two storied vertical size to all of the buildings. Tokyo Disneyland being mainly a copy of the original Disneyland in size ruins the 70s future aesthetic...too small.

The visual style of TDL Tomorrowland is in the most part, stunning, and it would have been a shame to lose that and replace it with something similar in style to MK. They still have the spires at TDL!! And they are glorious! And a speed ramp into Space Mountain! Losing their gorgeous and iconic Rocket Jets was bad enough!
@Emplordxiii4 жыл бұрын
You’re talking about the the french fries rocks? They got rid of those. For the last 2 years they were getting rid of them.
@honeyfromthebee3 жыл бұрын
I also think TDL Tomorrowland is the most cohesive out of all of them, and was happy to see that they have kept much of the original styling last time I was there. At this point, the retrofuturistic aesthetic easily ages just as well as the steam punk theme which they've half-heartedly tried at other locations, while at the same time retaining the nostaliga factor of the original. While some of the ideas presented for a new Tomorrowland here could be exciting, I'm glad that they at least didn't do it half-heartedly once the budget was no longer there. I even think it would be possible to marry some new ideas with what is there presently and still have a cohesive land.

Tomorrowland 94 at MK was fantastic! It was easily peak Tomorrowland at any park, alongside the original Discoveryland. Alien Encounter was a top-tier attraction and the Timekeeper was great too. I like the spires, but this Sci Fi city remodel would have been incredible.

@EEvtg Жыл бұрын
Wow, it's such a shame this never came to fruition! Although to be fair, OLC had already invested heavily in the park by changing Adventureland and adding Critter Country only a few years earlier. Seeing as they used much of Tomorrowland's space for Beauty and the Beast, I don't think much of this would be possible anymore, which makes me sad. I would have rather seen Sci-Fi city come to fruition than another IP ride, as great as that new ride is.

Yeah but in real life all Disney parks have shitty Tomorrowlands (specially Disneyland), except for Paris’ amazing Discoveryland
@Wig43 жыл бұрын
@@luuchoo93 It's not so amazing. The landscaping is "bare concrete". It is clear that, apart from Main Street (totally standard copy-paste layout), they had 2 separate design teams for the DLP landscaping. One team in charge of everything LEFT side in the park, including the Fantasy land castle surroundings >> the best landscaping in any Disney park around the world. And, one team in charge of everything RIGHT = Discoveryland and the right-side outline of Fantasyland, where concrete is the main thing, and even elementary 'fantasy-in-green-foliage' is unexisting. I also bet this 2nd team was responsible for the Studios landscaping... SAME boring concrete desert, there.
@luuchoo933 жыл бұрын
@@Wig4 Well, all Tomorrowlands have concrete, it’s not a land designed to showcase nature or green. But all of them are terrible except for Paris’ Discoveryland, which at least has an original concept going on and doesn’t look cheap/outdated like the rest. Paris’ Fantasyland is also amazingly done, I agree. The Studios, next door, is a whole different story, and probably looks like that because they spend most of the money on the main park

Honestly, I think it’s a good thing that those concepts for Tokyo Disneyland’s Tomorrowland never happened. A lot of them seemed to be from the 90s and I have a feeling that those designs wouldn’t have aged nearly as well. Compare the 1994 Tomorrowland remodel with the pre-remodel Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom (ironically the inspiration for the current Tomorrowland at TDL), and I feel that the pre-remodel Tomorrowland’s design at Magic Kingdom has aged far better than the post-remodel Tomorrowland. Effectively, the original look of that Tomorrowland (and by extension TDL’s Tomorrowland) has become the effortlessly retro-futuristic look that the 90s Tomorrowland concepts were trying to create. Essentially, Tokyo’s Tomorrowland, in avoiding the bad remodels of the 90s, has had its original design become retro-futuristic. All that’s really missing is for that retro-futuristic design to be applied consistently to every corner of the land, and maybe some minor touch-ups here and there.

Tomorrowland in the 1990’s wasn’t a problem. If they had just left it the way it was. 1967 Tomorrowland would have been “Retro Future” the same concept that Discoveryland at Disneyland Paris: Paris is a retro latter 19th century view of the future, while California would be the retro mid 20th century view of the future. But Eisner/Pressler were too stupid to comprehend that.
@honeyfromthebee3 жыл бұрын
I agree. I like the retrofuturistic theme and feel like it's aged fine. They can continue to innovate and refresh while retaining much of what makes the original concept special.
@MattGarcia3 жыл бұрын
They were too unsophisticated to get it indeed. Embrace the retro fully instead of half-assedly and visitors will also embrace it.
@gregorypena23302 жыл бұрын
That’s the irony of it. If they had left the California and Florida Tomorrowlands alone, they would have become the retro-futuristic aesthetic that they were trying so hard to imitate for free. Instead, they remodeled these lands in such a way that they ended up becoming more dated than if they had simply been left alone. In trying to create a timeless future, they ironically made the lands more dated.

That version of Tomrrowland looks dated from the standpoint of 2020. I'm glad they did not go through with it. I disagree with the Imagineers when they say the Tomorrowlands were continually turning into Todayland or Yesterdayland. Their technology did become dated, but not the physical forms/buildings. 70s Magic Kingdom Tomorrowland would remain futuristic had they not changed it. Updates with new technology like flat screens and LEDs would have refreshed it nicely.
