Not really. It cost about $3.1 billion to build. Alot less than Shanghai Disneyland's or Hong Kong Disneyland's construction costs. DisneySea was intended to be built in the Queen Mary/Shoreline Village area in Long Beach, California but Disney was bleeding cash due to the financial loss from Disneyland Paris at the time so the project was shelved. Later, Disney decided to build it in Tokyo when the Oriental Land Company wanted to open the second gate at Tokyo Disneyland Resort.

@@namviet7998 Yeah but compare it to Tokyo Disneyland, it cost 50% more to build, and that's adjusting for inflation (inflation in Japan not the US). Which isn't terribly surprising since all the other Disneyland* type parks follow a particular mold, using similar rides, so a lot of R&D money is saved there. I'm sure this park would cost even more if built in Shanghai or HK.

Fun fact: When Disney was designing Port Disney back in the late 1990s, they had a park called DisneySea, but after that fell through in California, which was supposed to be an expansion to Disneyland, they pretty much brought the ideas over to Japan and implemented them here to open in 2001 :)
@JKalama257997524 жыл бұрын
@Harlock1776 It probably wouldn't have been equal to Disney Sea because Tokyo Disneyland spends so much money on their rides and attractions it's almost like they give the imagineers no budget. Would've been so much more awesome than Disney California though!

It certainly does look like it was probably supposed to be in Long Beach CA (it's City council didn't want to deal with the traffic, among other things). As it is, California Adventure's Paradise Pier also bears a resemblance to that same port.
@nyckmo90474 жыл бұрын
From what I've read, the Port Disney project originally planned for Long Beach was supposed to be a hybrid aquarium - similar to that of the Living Seas pavillion in Epcot but on a much grander scale.This project did have a Mount Prometheus as seen in concept art, but I don't think the attractions were the same. Mermaid Lagoon and the Arabian Coast areas weren't in the original plans either. Although the park concept morphed, the overall theme is generally in the same spirit. Side note: if Euro Disney wasn't such a financial disaster, I wonder if we would've seen WestCot instead of DCA come to fruition. Sigh...

Additional fun fact: I have a friend who worked in Imagineering while this was being designed. He told me that they basically built everything in warehouses in CA first, then disassembled them and shipped them to Japan.

Pretty much the entire reason this park is so much more elaborately themed than any other Disney park is because Disney themselves didn't finance its construction. That bill was entirely footed by The Oriental Land Company, the owners of the Tokyo Disney Resort who actually *license* the Disney brand name and IP's from them. Walt Disney Imagineering basically took full advantage of this and used the park as a showcase of what they're truly capable of when they aren't being held back by Disney's executives constantly cutting their budgets (as was the case with almost every single one of their state-side projects at the time like California Adventure, which ironically opened in the same year).

@zacg_4 жыл бұрын
It's a cool thought but one of the reasons that extreme thrill coasters aren't ever seen in highly detailed theme parks (though Phantasialand is maybe an exception) is because not only would that be super expensive but it would be hard to make it make sense. Theming on a coaster is hard to appreciate if you are going super fast. Also, if you want the theme to really work well you have to come up with a way to justify the existence of the track with the overall theme. That's why mine trains make for good themed coasters. But a Steel Vengeance in a Disney setting would just be hard to pull off. You'd have to do some kind of mountain and keep the track itself hidden from other park guests. Then you'd have to have theming that isn't entirely missed by riders going 70mph. Don't get me wrong. If Disney did something like that and the second half where you are weaving inside the SV structure was made to seem like moving through cave holes then that would be UNBELIEVABLE. But it would be really hard to pull off southport breaking from the story and theming.
@neo38884 жыл бұрын
@@zacg_ That's something I completely agree with, which is why I really could only *imagine* the concept of it, the possibility of there being a true balance between a ride featuring sheer intensity and thrill while also telling a cohesive, immersive and detail-oriented story is just inconceivable, especially with the reasons you've pointed out. But I believe that there are people out there, specifically imagineers, that could make it happen to an extent. My best bet at this being a reality is if Disney patents a sort of hybrid between a high-speed slot-car system (Test Track and Journey) and a mine train, and features the storytelling elements at the start (Space Mtn's queue and chain lift, Test Track's numerous trials, etc.) and then implementing the intense coaster-like portion of it around a less detailed part, such as in the dark. But making it themed *during* these intense parts is definitely a challenge, though I've heard that's what they're going for in the upcoming Cosmic Rewind coaster at EPCOT. This is to assume that Disney is willing to put out a ride of this scale and budget, and of course the inevitable IP to tie it in, it's gotta be something worth making, such as a Marvel theme.

The sindbad water ride in the Arabian area is a grossly underrated attraction. Really, really well done. Compass shinjimas! Edit: When I rode the Indiana Jones ride in 2015, they billed it as based off of that abysmal crystal skull ride. Spoilers for your next DisneySea trip: You definitely won't get wet on Aquatopia unless it's actually raining. The ride is super chill and depending on the track of your ride vehicle, there are moments where you think you'll get wet but you get saved just in time. I totally recommend riding Sinbad's Storybook Voyage in the Arabian Coast, especially because the wait is super short. My favorite parts were the music and Chandu. I'm not sure if you saw it (because I missed it when I was there) or if it's still even there, but there's an area called "Fortress Explorations" that's like a bit like a playground. But lately I have been really getting more of an idea and I am pretty impressed now. I'd really like to visit some day. And I would like to visit Tokyo Disneyland too just for the nostalgia of experiencing a Magic Kingdom in another country but if I had to choose: DisneySea all the way. Your review and filming of this was really great btw. Even though the weather wasn't the greatest and there was construction I was still fascinated.

Fun fact! Im sure someone has already mentioned but Aquatopia is only a "get wet" ride in the summer! During the cooler seasons they turn off the splash effects so you can still enjoy and not freeze.

For the record, the Sea in Tokyo DisneySea is actually an acronym. Society of Explorers and Adventurers. This concept of the society is what links all Disney parks around the world.

I rode that trackless water ride atleast 10 times, and I didn’t even get remotely wet, so you should feel pretty safe riding it.

The Toy Story part of the park is actually brilliant. What they've really done is recreated Coney Island's Luna Park from the 1900's. is is perfectly in keeping with the other New York theme dating, and also recreates the magic of early electric lighting in these parks. It's amazing.

It should be called toy story land and needs another ride like parachute drop at Disneyland Paris

Raging Spirits is I believe the same ride as the one at Disneyland Paris, which is pretty much Intamin's version of a Pinfari Zyklon model :D

Quick pointer, mobile Fastpass is an option if you have the official resort app, but it can only be downloaded with a Japanese app store account and used with a Japanese Disney account over Japanese mobile data (i.e. you can't use an international account to either download or use the app). If you know your stuff, you can set up Japanese accounts and download the app pretty easily, and then get a Japanese SIM card when you arrive in country.

The Fortress Explorations and Sinbad’s Storybook Voyage are two of my favorite things to do there. Ariel’s Grotto and Indiana Jones closely follow those up. Disney Sea is absolute magic and though I’ve been there twice, I will definitely be back. I’m pretty whatever about most all other Disney Parks (I prefer Universal parks by far) but Disney Sea is my #1 overall theme park in the world.

Beautiful, stunning theme park. However - not without some faults. The fastpass allocations across this resort mean that regular standby lines get just too long. The key was to ride the most popular rides within the first hour at the very end of the day - when no fastpass was impacting. My highlight here was Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

Next time you get to visit, for sure try aquatopia! In summer they should have both “experiences” open, one side will be “no wet” and the other side “very very wet”. Both are super fun but they do mean very very wet (like pirates show canon wet) so choose wisely!

"King Neptune". That killed me x'DDDDI really wanna go to Tokyo Disney Sea, simply for the whole theme...I love anything nautical / mediterranian so this is on the top of my bucketlist!

Idk why there's so much shade threw towards the Disney parks, they're amazing all around and it's the best resort by far.

I don't know that I would go so far as to say that Tokyo Disneyland is Lame, but I will agree that with the exception of Pooh's Honey Hunt, it feels like the least original of the Disneyland Parks, as Disneyland, Magic Kingdom and Hong Kong Disneyland all have multiple attractions and/or areas that help them stand out from the others. I haven't been to Shanghai or Paris yet, but I get the sense that they too have things that help them stand out more. Tokyo Disneyland feels more like it's the "Greatest Hits of Disneyland Parks", which certainly isn't a bad thing, just not very original in a way. Also, you missed out on Sinbad's Storybook Voyage. It's like a better version of it's a small world with a beautiful song for the background that I love, even if I don't know most of the words with it being in Japanese. The melody and the tune are great and can convey the sense of adventure that the ride goes for. - Gary

Tokyo Disneyland will soon have it's stand out attraction when "The Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast" opens, a trackless ride through Beast's castle full of cutting edge animatronic characters from the animated classic. And it's based on the original animated movie, not the more recent live action version. It'll be the only ride based on Beauty and The Beast anywhere in the world. disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2019/09/new-experiences-coming-to-tokyo-disneyland-spring-of-2020/

On top of Flounder's Flying Fish credit, make sure to ride Sindbad's Storybook Voyage in Arabian Coast on your next visit. I know you don't like Small World, but apart from being a boat ride with a song, the two rides are totally different, so I think you'd enjoy it. Plus it's practically always a walk on. Also Big Band Beat in the American Waterfront is a must watch, by far the best show a theme park has ever put together!!

I’ve been last year in November... Christmas Time! 🎄 The Christmas shows on the lake ... 🤩 wow! 120 dancers alone and then a lot of Disney Characters on 3 stages and 3 boats around the lake! ( I don’t know but they probably going to do kinda like this in Disney Paris Studios, the new part ) Best Disney Shows ever: the music, the Life Singers, the dancers and the costumes... wow Magical ✨ Like you said and a lot of people who went to Disney Sea ... so detailed so themed... the best themed Disney Parc ... and so many different popcorn buckets! ( I bought 10 different ones 😊 ) and so many Mickey/Duffy food items ✨ Magical 😃

coolest park I've been at. I've been there twice. I agree, journey to the centre of the earth is AMAZING, as is the rest of the park. you have to visit mermaid lagoon. even though it's themed more for kids, it is absolutely magical!

Ok but who the heck is King Neptune though? But honestly yeah something like Taron could really fit into and whatnot, one giant amongst the smaller ones for the coasters, clearly they got everything else covered pretty well. And yes, so agreed on what you said about magic kingdom, it's "TOURISM!" it's really not that submersive. Stuff like this really is though.

You won't get wet what so ever on Aquatopia, just FYI. Gotta say American Waterfront might be my favorite land, just because of the detail. Lost River Delta would be if there was just a little bit more to do there I think. I was at this park about a month before you went and the scaffolding around the park was much more minimum, I figured they were finishing up with it. But that's a bummer you didn't see everything as intended.
