Tokyo Ghoul and Tokyo Ghoul:re are some of the most amazing manga I've ever read and the anime adaptation was, sub-par to put it lightly.
In this video I go through all the reasoning I can come up with to convince you to read the Tokyo Ghoul Manga, whether you're completely new to the series, heard about it from the hype it had some years back, or even if you're an anime only watcher who felt disappointed, I hope to shed some light on what makes this manga so special.
I did try to keep this one as spoiler free as I could, but there are a few spoilers which I do give warning to prior so just watch out for those.
None the less, I hope you all enjoy this one as it's a bit of a different vibe to my regular videos and is a bit of a passion project I've been wanting to create for a while.
If you did enjoy don't forget to leave a like and subscribe and leave a comment too letting me know what you thought, any and all support is greatly appreciated.
All art and panels within this video are covered under fair use as transformative work as seen within: 10. Transformative Use and Quotation

Thanks! I recently decided to watch TG. Saw the second season episodes had this "A" symbol on them, and thought this might mean they were anime original. Sure enough, the tone was different, and the way Kaneki was behaving felt nonsensical to me. When I looked up the first ep of :Re, and saw how jarringly different this seemed from the end of season two, I instantly went and read through the manga instead. I figured they pulled a Blue Exorcist, with later part of the first Anime being Original, while reverting back to Manga plot in the next season. I don't regret it. The manga (especially :Re) was a good tearjerker. I liked how it succeeded in making me feel for most of its cast, and you can understand the reasons the two main sides are fighting equally. Whether you watched Tokyo Ghoul or not, I also recommend the manga (while also agreeing with the pacing criticism). I do like the ending as well. I appreciate the thematic completion of Ken Kaneki's introduction quote about his story being a tragedy.

I always images that 1. Kaneki was weak, and realized he needed to grow stronger to protect the ones he loved, but that he wouldn’t be able to achieve that strength at anteiku or 2. Kaneki no longer wants to coexist with humans, as they will always be there to hunt them down, so instead of waiting for the doves, he wants to help aogiri establish ghouls as dominant in order to protect the weaker ghouls. I actually think it could’ve been a really cool twist, but I don’t think they made it believable, and especially when fans were already expecting it to go in another direction

Also characters were getting their developments after the time skip (some of my favorite character developments were juzou’s and Urie’s) And lastly can’t forget Haise Sasaki an underrated Kaneki persona and I thought his character added A LOT to the overall story (even if he was present for a short while).

Jr honestly as a whole I tend to prefer Re, arguably yes Tokyo Ghoul was written better and of course as Ishidas mental state towards the end of Re changed the way the ending played out, but personally I really enjoyed it and felt as though after the tragic ending of Tokyo Ghoul, Re almost deserved a ‘happy’ ending, and if Ishida went down the tragic path again for the end of Re, I feel like it would’ve almost felt overdone at that point. plate I feel like the ending of Tokyo Ghoul left a lot unfinished with so many concepts unexplored, that Re was able to hone in on due to it coming from a different perspective. I can see how the later parts of Re can seem mediocre and to be fair a lot of people tend to agree with that, but yeah I definitely enjoyed it, the way I think of the ending in particular is like the amalgamation of all the weight and pressure everyone throughout the story has put on Kaneki’s shoulders finally burst through the physical manifestation of ‘Dragon’, which is also a personification of that fact in its own right. It’s like the reality of what many protagonists in fiction go through but pumped up to 11 and showing the actual toll it can take on a person to put so much burden on them, and I feel like that’s also how Ishida felt when writing Re especially towards the end, there was so much pressure and so many fans with high expectations as well as publishers and everyone else in the industry on his back, it’s clear his mental state wasn’t the best by the end of Re and he wasn’t particularly enjoying drawing manga anymore, and that’s also more than likely the reason he opted for a happier ending to Re, rather than another tragic one like TG.

@@Viseak I don't take issue with a happy ending. For me, the ending felt like it just turned into cloudy with a chance of meatballs, where kaneki just ends up destroying a bunch of terrain, and spawning henchmen in this weird finale that felt like it belonged in a spin off video game and not in manga panels. Same thing with the return of "Rize"??? That is just another game exclusive feeling character that we see nothing from before she dies again. It just felt so self contained, exactly like how video game spin offs feel. I couldn't suspend disbelief. Even kaneki's new kagune formation felt like a game exclusive form that was made as a treat to fans. I liked Tokyo Ghoul because there wasn't anything that made me think "wow, we are really rushing now, aren't we?" and even things like kaneki's weird ghoul gills, and previously unseen ghoul organs. That stuff all just made me raise an eyebrow. I just felt like a lot of content didn't fit in a way that was compelling to me.

Thanks for your video, I'll definitely put the manga in my plan-to-read list. I already watched the entire anime and I never got into it for a couple of reasons. First of all, I watched "Tokyo Ghoul" and "√A" in the dubbed version (in italian in my case), and sometimes the voice performances were pretty silly. An other reason is that at the time I hadn't watched yet many anime, so I didn't get the entire thing about "ghouls" or its core themes. And finally, the terrible adaptation of the story left me always more confused than engaged. Now, two years after the "Tokyo Ghoul:re" anime ended, I have became more familiar with anime as a medium, and I have matured also as a person. I realized recently that "ghouls" were not an original concept of Sui Ishida, but that they are derived from the dark fantasy sub-genre, and that was the beginning of my re-evaluation of "Tokyo Ghoul". After that, I wanted to listen again the OST of the anime (the only thing I remembered being worth of value), and so far I'm enjoying it very much. The next logical step I should take is reading the manga, but I was still a bit skeptical about it - up until now, when I heard your thoughts and advice on the series. For that, I really appreciated your honestly about some things like the pacing and the ending, two topics that I wanted to assure myself. I'm still uncertain if I need to read "Tokyo Ghoul", though. I generally avoid stories with dark tones and violent contents because they often make me feel unconfortable (in fact I think I'm the type of person that gets upset more easily than others), but on the other hand I really want to change my mind about "Tokyo Ghoul". But that, in the end, is a decision that I must take on my own.

No worries at all! Even the English Dub for Tokyo Ghoul wasn’t fantastic, I mean the anime in general wasn’t that great even in Japanese but the localisations definitely wouldn’t have helped. It’s great to hear even after watching the anime, that you’re still interested in reading the manga. It’s almost like an entirely different story and although yes it can be a bit dark at times, it’s a lot more psychological and I think you’ll thoroughly enjoy it. Speaking of the OST, I had someone else in the comments mention listening to it while reading the manga enhanced their experience so maybe you could try that too if you enjoy it. None the less thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

I watched the first two seasons and a couple of episodes of Re before starting the manga because I wanted to hear what their voices sound like in the anime so it would be easier for me to read the manga that way since I like to imagine the characters' voices in my head while I read the dialogue. I also don't read a lot of shonen so the very detailed but very well drawn fight scenes can sometimes confuse me. I also really like the OPs and EDs, especially the ED for Root A. I know the anime has a lot of flaws but I personally loved the first 2 seasons even though they changed the plot quite a bit.

Tokyo Ghoul:Re ending spoiler The reason why I liked Tokyo Ghoul:Re's ending is the ambiguity of it all. The last panel we get of Kaneki on Chapter 178 is him falling into the dragons body that has become liquid and he is full submerged. He hears someone say they been watching him and thats it. The next chapter all we get is told that Ayato saved him and the rest is basically filled with the absolute best case scenario that Kaneki could hope for, also worth mentioning that he looks the exact same he did when he got submerged, but enough time has passed for their child to be born and be a couple years old already. Perhaps making the centipede dragon form created a permanent change, but without any explanation or reasoning its hard to accept. Their child also has white lots of white in her hair, despite both Kaneki and Touka having dark hair genes. I ain't mad at anyone who thinks that happy ending really did happen, because that's the beauty of the ambiguity of it.

I’ve seen this theory a few times, but it just doesn’t make sense. The main problem with it is the fact that the final chapter is narrated by Hide, and he’s the one who reveals everything that happens to the characters after the story. If it was narrated by Kaneki, then you could argue that the final chapter is possibly his final thoughts about what he hopes will happen in the future, but that simply isn’t the case.

Ok so I’ve only seen the anime in it’s entirety. I knew when I started that season 1 was pretty accurate & more or less a straight forward adaptation of the manga but season 2 differed from the manga (which I thought was fine bc while they’re are disaster fires w that route there’s also great things like FMA 2003) however where I started to get worried going into it was when I knew that the second season differed from the manga but the third season went back to more or less adapting the manga straight again. So TLDR: I was terrifying the series would be COMPLETELY confusing because of them going back & forth on when they adapt the manga that I held off watching the series for the longest time. & then I watched it. & ya’know what? I thought it was pretty good all the way through. It made sense at least in my head & while I did read up on the changes to the second season b4 starting the third to my surprise the story rlly didn’t change all that much. Like the plot points still happened but for different reasons & while I can understand & agree that the manga’s character choices that led to the bigger plot points were better in the manga (especially w Kaneki) I think the anime did it just as right (especially bc the mangaka told the anime director to make his own thing w season 2 while still following the major points) so in short i think season 2 & the anime all together is overhatted as the changes between the manga & season 2 weren’t THAT extreme (except the kaneki one) so while I’ll admit going off the mangas season 2 era events & the rest of the anime that was more or less the manga adaptation that the manga is probably better the anime is by no means actually bad or terrible like some ppl say or act like it is I love both the manga & the anime both have their flaws but are both have perfect elements too

I’ve read the manga but I have to say that I absolutely love the anime. Hell, I actually prefer some aspects of it over that of the manga. I love the art style of the anime, especially :re, and I found the animation to be great. I don’t understand why people complained about the animation. I liked seeing everything in color; the monochrome tones used in manga can distract me from certain details. If you look at the anime as its own standalone, it’s amazing. I never found the anime to be confusing at all, as certain plot points tie in later on. I still recommend the manga but I honestly wish the anime could’ve been appreciated for what it is. It saddens me to see the anime get the hate that it does, and sometimes I feel bad for even liking it since many people in the fandom have bashed me for liking it, especially the hardcore manga elitists who act like the anime is worse than Satan himself. “Fans” like that make me feel ashamed to be a Tokyo Ghoul fan. But I feel that I have to defend the anime in order to help more people appreciate it and get more people into the series since the fandom is dying fast

I don't speak for everyone but there's lots of a lot of polarizing moments. One being the decision to omit volumes 8-14 of the original manga. Tokyo Ghoul went from volumes 1-14 before moving to Tokyo Ghoul RE however the anime cut out volumes 8-14 to create a new storyline with new moments and a lot of stuff that was contradictory and people didn't like. On top of that when Tokyo Ghoul RE's anime adaptation came out they decided to follow the manga again, and a lot of things don't connect well between the stories because there's no continuity between what happened in season 2 of tokyo ghoul to the rest because none of that content in season 2 was actually "canon" so lots of it was completely overlooked or disregarded because it held no actual weight in the story of the manga. Then on top of that all seasons that did follow the manga omitted tons of manga content. Tokyo Ghoul RE(seasons 3/4) was more guilty of this than season 1. A prime example being kaneki in Aogiri tree, he actually did way more in Aogiri than just fight jason like we saw in season 1, he had more character defining moments that led up to that however they didn't make it to the anime. Also I think RE was guilty of putting too much focus on fighting, cause tokyo ghoul's not necessarily a regular fight anime, it's a dark fantasy with fighting involved but they tried to hard on going hard on the fight scenes So as a TLDR; I honestly think it was a combination of blatant content cutting, creating a new storyline for no reason, then trying to connect that disjointed storyline back to the main storyline and rushing out content and not giving critical information time to be digested, and dumbing down of the storytelling and worldbuilding in favor of cool fight scenes

Really bad decision. :Re is just as great as the original TG. Hell, in my opinion, it's even better!

The character and story building is just incomparable between the manga and the anime i honestly hated the entire anime if im honest
@Viseak
@Viseak 4 жыл бұрын
plate can’t blame you for that, I feel like season 1 was OK at best and at the very least brought attention to the series and got people to read the manga. I know I probably never would’ve found the manga without it. The rest of the anime is just straight up unredeemable and paints a fantastic manga in a horrible light

Peachy Jimin yeah some of the anime doesn’t follow the manga so it gets quite confusing, if you do want to watch the anime I’d recommend checking out the manga first.

I have a difficult time reading when they make a manga equivalent of audibleor release English translated versions of manga on audible which they may very well be it's difficult for me to read which is why I would want that not to make it more difficult for people producing manga or animenot all translations are done during well that is a matter of the different companiesdone in the first place and other factors that nothing to do with the translation at all

Why the fuck would anyone pick up a manga on audible? At that point just pirate an E-Book. (I own the manga physically and do not support piracy, however I also don't support people giving pain to themselves)
