When's the part when you realise the shitty stuff like the massive nationalism endemic in Japanese culture or the sexism homophobia and racism?
@katrinareads7 ай бұрын
@@DimT670 Sometimes, when you live there from ages 6-18 in the '90s and '00s, that's just the way things are growing up, and after you as a white person leave the country where you've been called "gaijin" every day of your life, you use that horrible experience back in your "home country" to be empathetic with the fight against racism and teach girls to be strong. And even growing up, as a missionary kid, you can be the surprise to them. You can prove that Americans aren't the gun-toting, alcohol swigging people portrayed on TV. You can state your support for a woman running for President. You can set a standard that people of all skin colors are welcome in your church--white, other Asians, even those with darker skins than Asians. And when as a teenager, your mom's Japanese friend asks if your mom as a Christian would be willing to spend time with her and her lesbian cousin, you watch as your mom says "Yes" and watch the woman be shocked because whether we agree with the lifestyle or not, that woman is still a person who deserves to see there are people who are friendly to her. So, you know, as a white person maybe you can't do much to change the whole culture, but you can change a few people...and maybe those few people are only the start of the social change that Japan so desperately needs.
